Sam's Savage Orcs - Not so Orcy, but still pretty Savage (200 pts)

Okay so I had plan for this month and it was to paint a whole bunch of savage orcs. Well long story short - it didn't happen. So instead I used my handy 'mulligan get out of jail free card' and painted up my Giant.

My offering:

1 x Giant - 200 points
Don't mess wiv me or my son!

When I was planning the force I knew I had to have a Giant. Three reasons:

  1. Nostalgia: all the old forces I used to play with/against and white dwarf's always had a giant
  2. Theme: I'm keeping to savage orc theme (for now), so no war machines or gobbos. I think Giants and Trolls are pretty savage/ technologically backwards, so fit the theme
  3. Orcyness: roping a giant into service with promises of food and beer just for the fun of watching the destruction is just so damned orcy!

Originally I was planning to use one (possibly both) of the Giants of Albion as regular Giant/s. They both look the part - furs, tattoos, clubs and stone, so would fit in nicely with a savage orc theme. However, they also happen to cost more than the sun and I've no intention of donating organs to uphold my personal theme logic. Other models like the (wonderful) marauder Giant are a bit too dressed up for savage orcs and the plastic ones aren't oldhammer, plus they are too big and daft looking. Then I stumbled across the C28 Giant models, these are models that are before my time, but when I saw them I knew it was a hit. Loads of options, but no matter which ones I got, it would work out great. I ended up with the 'Bottlesnort' body, 'Pinhead' head and the stone club, which I think fits in perfectly.

I'm not dopey, honest

Savage crack shot

I didn't have an appropriately sized base so I jerry-rigged one together from two cavalry bases, some brass rod and a bit of putty, MacGyver style. And to give the scene even more character I thought I would add a snotling to the base, what with their penchant for impersonating their older sibling races. And what would you have it, I just so happened to have one in exactly the same pose! Considering how dopey the Giant looks, I quite like the fact that its hard to tell which one is impersonating which.

Well that's all folks. Now off to start working on some combination of these guys below for next month...

  2. Excellent work! I never tried using a giant in my O&G armies but may have to find one of the C28's.

  7. The c28 giants are my favorite of all the giants Citade/GW has ever produced. Great job on this one. The base really compliments the figure.

  9. I love the snotling!

I'm also big fan of the later c28 giants. Glad to see one in the OWAC. And nicely painted and based, at that!

I'm curious, though. You said the Albion giants & others were more expensive... Did you buy this one recently? I've been looking for more c28 giants but the few that seem to pop up are always outside of my budget.

    1. Thanks a lot dude.

I won this guy in mint condition for £30 on eBay about 6 months ago, which was a good price. I've seen beaten up ones (easily corrected by stripping) go for £15-20ish. There were a couple going for that price on the FB oldhammer trading group 2-3 weeks ago. I think the marauder one normally goes for £60+ and Giants of Albion £50+ each and a small fortune if they are boxed. So in general if you shop around I think the C28's are cheaper, but you need to be flexible with set-up as there are like 3 possible bodies, 5 heads and 5 weapons.
