PaulM's Retch Twins and chums (258pts)

 Rank and file #2

Well, month two down and despite the minimal model count it was still rather touch and go as to whether I'd cross the finish or have to burn my wildcard.

Very bitty this month unfortunately. Continuing on my quest to get the rank and file out of the way as much as possible I took the decision to finish off the last of my marauders (the standard bearer and musician will accompany Kagan the Hollow and Dr. Hydigger in during my Leader Month).

I also decided that I wanted to get at least one whole unit finished this month, and with the Retch Twins (two trolls) being the smallest in the army they were an easy target. These are two Tim Prow trolls from RPE. I added some plate fungus to them to tie them in with some of the Marauders who also show some fungal outgrowths and then broke my rule on green...by painting them green.

I'm still shit at photography and ran out of time to do anything about it

The beasts are a mix of GW with a single DSA figure from RPE. I've always loved these models ever since seeing Paul Sawyer's Beastman army in A Tale of Four Gamers in WD during 5th edition.

The two Chaos Marauders are GW from '88, painted in the style described last month. You may also notice that I've found my shields! Now everyone who should have one does. No going back and having to fix that later now.

So, points for this month:

Two trolls - 130pts
Two Chaos Marauders - 78pts
Five Beastmen - 50pts
----------------------------------------------
Month two total - 258pts
Running total - 648pts

Next month will see me tackle more rank and file; Korrag's Kompany of three mercenary Ogres and five more Beastmen, including command that have been so graciously donated by a certain Mr. Pettigrew (he of the Fabulous Fimir).

Classic Bob Olley Ogres make up Korrag's Kompany

  1. You really do need to step up your photography because thse figures are ace. Get yourself a lightbox on Amazon for aroud 30$. I quite like your work on the woodgrain of the shields.

    1. I have two. But the colours on these (skin tones in particular) are quite bright so the pictures tend to get really blown out. I tried to take these in natural light, with the first bit of sun we've had and they're still wank.

My spray booth actually has a half decent set-up as it has lights on the side and two positions at the top. I might try that as a make shift booth.

I was also running out of time, so it was either these pictures or none unfortunately.

  2. Yeah - keep persevering with the photography! I often find natural light is too harsh especially bright sunlight, nice as it is when we finally get some! To avoid over exposure I'd draw the curtains, get a little spot lamp or desk lamp that's angled down so the light hits the minis head on rather than from above. You might have to mess around a bit with the positioning of the lamp to find the sweet spot where the minis are lit enough but not so that there's tons of light being reflected off them and back in to the camera. Dunno what sort of camera you've got but turning the ISO setting (brightness) down can help. I don't mess around too much with the technical stuff because I don't understand it so well but increasing the shutter speed limits the amount of light coming in to avoid over exposure too. I also use Picasa to edit my photos and there's a few tools in there that can help to adjust the contrast and brightness.

Never really given those trolls a second look before but I will now having seen yours painted up - really nice! Love the plate fungus additions!

  3. Lovely work. As with Steve I've never really looked at those Trolls before but they are heading straight to the top of the purchase que.
