Pokrzyw's introduction post - OWAC V - High Elves - WFB 4th edition

This is my first attempt to OWAC, so little bit stressed...

About me - My name is Piotr, better known as pokrzyw. I've been living in Wrocław (one of the biggest cities in Poland) with beautiful wife, lovely daughter and dog. Work in IT. In free time I try to spend time far away from computer - board games, mantrailing (find people using dog nose) and of course collecting, painting and play wargames using miniatures.

I started playing WFB somewhere around introduction of 5 edition. Bretonnia was the cheapest possible way to enter the hobby. In Poland in the middle 90's buying army for a teenager was really hard. Knights are cool, but I always wanted to play high elves. Later my heart goes to Sisters of Battle and 40k. During first covid attack my friend turned my mind back to WFB - targeting 7th edition. Since then I gather some forces of elves (wood, dark and high) and the Empire. Meantime I did some exchanges that cause my dream turns into the reality.

I know that none of these miniatures are really old ;) It's just 90's middlehammer. But from my perspective it is return back to my childhood.

I plan to finish all forces that I gathered. It may be tricky, but I have gut feeling that this is feasible. Planned army list (red means plan minimum to fulfill challenge requirements) :

A lot of points, but not so many miniatures (108). Some of them missed some parts - shields, swords. Many horses loose its tails. Chariots has only one wheel for two models. All missing parts will be printed or created by myself.

Proposed timeline - as you may noticed each month contains one slot from plan minimum, and some additional models.
  • Month 1 - Archers x2, Archers x1
4edition clones with command groups - two from 4th edition, one from 5th edition.

  • Month 2 - General on dragon, Teclis, 2 Mages
Last full-metal dragon. The best sculpt of Teclis plus standard metal mage. Couldn't find the second mage (Allarielle), so i will put last photo i had.

  • Month 3 - Swordmasters, Silver helms
Marauder swordsmasters plus classic silver helms on old-style horses.

  • Month 4 - Bolt throwers, Tiranoc charioteers
The reason why people hates HE players. Three beautiful and powerful repeaters plus two chariots - one from 4th edition second from 5th edition.

  • Month 5 - Spearmens, Shadow warriors
4th edition clones with command group plus Marauder's shadow warriors

  • Month 6 - Dragon princes, Phoenix guards
    Heavy cavalry and old guardsman.

All that forces are spied by forces of dark opponent.  One of these villains' was catch and will be precious offering for Overlord:

  1. I've done high elves for OWAC which I also love. They are rather hard to paint, so you have chosen a difficult amount! But if your offering is any indication, they will look great!

    1. That's why i splitted into plan minimum and optional for each week. Last year I painted similar amount of HE for 7th edition. It would be hard, but is possible :)

  2. Great project. It's not "Oldhammer" for us "Old people", but it is for you and that's what counts. Plus any excuse to use Marauder minis is a good excuse! :) I do think that over 100 Elves is ambitious, and I'm very impressed by your careful planning. I think I could learn from that!

    1. I prefer to think of Oldhammer as a state of mind rather than a strict definition on the various ages of models or rules systems.

My Chaos army of last year was not Oldhammer by the traditional metric (only about 20% of the models were sculpted '90 or earlier

  4. Looking forward to seeing the army come together Piotr. I was going to go for HElves last year but chickened out and went for Chaos instead.

    1. Thanks! The only question is which colour scheme shall i choose... White plus many colours (4th edition), white with single colour per unit (5th edition, my preferable), or maybe follow my own scheme lavender, white and mint, that I have already on 7th edition army..

    1. Thank you!

Strategy for that amount of models is really important to keep whole project on tracks. First and last months may be the worst for me - in first month there are 22 cloned miniatures ;) in last one 15 models, but with many details.

  8. Hold on, I know Wrocław, attended the childrens annual fencing competition with my kids, over ten years ago - good memories especially of that central square, trying to find a venue to feed twenty hungery kids and their parents, usually ended up in the vaults under the town hall!
Welcome to OWAC V, good luck

    1. Nice to hear it :) World is small. Unfortunately Piwnica Świdnicka is closed for aboout five years (it would be renowated), but city is growing and you will noticed some good changes (except terrible traffic)...

  9. An impressive looking host! Good luck - I'm sure your meticulous planning (worthy of any High Elf!) will see you through. At least you won't have as many gems to paint as the Eldar painters last year!

  12. Great to see another Middlehammer era High Elf force in the OWAC this year, although yours has a lot more ambition than mine! I'll be cheering you on :)
