Adrian's OWAC3 Orc horde Wrap-Up

-The hand that rocks the cradle behind the orc hordes.

Hi everyone! This was my first OWAC and it has been a pretty fun experience. Honestly, while sometimes it has been difficult to paint all the miniatures, the format of the challenge was a complete overhaul of my painting schedules. It has been also, the first time that I painted an entire pile of old lead in 5-6 months.
In the old days, when you had to paint after classes and ran to your local tournament to play blocks of plastic and lead miniatures, you usually “made up” one or two units that you couldn’t get in time. Now, I am pleased with all of them.
Part of the thrilling of painting all the miniatures each month was also to show them to all of you, which, had pretty impressive armies. I want to thank our beloved Overlod for the opportunity to participate, the support of all the other folks.

The list of orcs in its current state:

Zharkk Facesmaha, Level 20 Orc Hero - 91 points
17 Orc Big Uns with spears, shield, musician and banner - 206 points

15 Orc boys with spears shield, musician and banner - 167.5 points

10 Black Orcs with lots of weapons, musician and banner - 100 points

Harboth, Level 5 Orc Hero +
9 Orc Arrer boys with shield, musician and banner - 127.5 points

ser Gitfried, Level 10 Goblin Hero +
19 Goblins with spear, shield, musician and banner - 108 points

10 Goblin stikkas - 35 points

Spear chukka with goblin crew - 37.5 points

3 Trolls - 195 points

Total: 1067.5 points

That's it. And it is not the same quantity that our Overlord has calculated. So he may kill me after all for messing with the list.

The right flank, preparared to crush our enemies.

The left flank, prepared to shoot the enemy. Hope that they hit something.

The boys. The bread and butter of every good orc rabble.

The boss, with his retainers.

If everything fails, simply apply more brute force with the black orc shock troops.

The hordes of goblinoids, the light troops of the army.

Finally, three good old trolls, when you need no finesse.

So far, so good.
I had to admit that I though that the greenskin would be an additional caveat, as they are my first orc & goblin miniatures ever. I am a dwarf and eldar painter, fewer troops, fewer shades of skin. In the end it wasn’t a handicap at all. On the contrary, it was an opportunity to experiment with the greens, greys and browns, looking for a varied bunch of “green”skin tones. That’s one of the aspects I enjoyed the most with this project.

Which also link with the future of this army. I am looking for an army worthy of playing Blood Bath at Orc’s Drift. The black orcs will act as the 10 orc king's retainers, so the next step may be completion of the 40-something vile rune and severed hand units, as well as start painting the third clan. I want to base the third clan using the old charming Ruglud’s armored orcs with halberds. However, as of late this unit has been completely halted by the situation and I had only few of them laying around.
Maybe complete the next batch of orcs and some warmachines for the OWAC IV?. Lets see, because I also had some other space-elf projects in mind.

Stay safe and hope to see everyone in the next challenge.
Until that day,
Adrian’s out!

Sam's Savage Orcs - Da Horde is Complete

So when I started out on this journey two years ago following a nostalgia rush, the point was to get myself a fully painted army of old. An army like the ones I used to pore over in WD and spend time daydreaming about (when I should've likely been concentrating on schoolwork, meh). And with two consecutive years of the challenge I have finally done it. For the first time ever a 2000+pt army fully painted and based. Its done, woohoo!

I'm not going to lie this years 1000pts was tough at times though, the shear weight of painting the same scheme on broadly similar models really started to demotivate me. It wasn't helped by one of the other miniature projects I have going on learning how to walk, both terrorizing the household and severely reducing painting time and effort as I had to thoroughly put everything away after each session lest it get lost, eaten or otherwise incapacitated somehow. Honestly, I was only saved by a good dose of OWAC style shaming and the joy of painting the iconic 90s stone trolls.

Anyway, enough natter, on to the good stuff. The List:

OWAC III:

124pts - "Zogrod Mindmasha" - Savage Orc Shaman Champion, DHW

100pts - "Da Bull" - Savage Orc Big Boss, DHW

100pts - "Urgul 'Da Hammer' 'Eadbasha" - Savage Orc Big Boss, DHW

99pts - "Mad Krug Teefsmasha" - Savage Orc Big Boss, additional HW

171pts - "Da Immortalz" - 16 Savage Orc's, spears, shields, standard bearer & musician

190pts - "Da Crazy Huntaz" - 20 Savage Orc's, bows

390pts - "Da Rock 'Ard Bruvvaz" - 6 x Stone Trolls

30pts - "Summink still underfoot" - 2 x Snotling bases

Total 1204

plus last years list from OWAC II:

158pts - "Ugg Bonekrakka" - Savage Orc Warlord, War Boar (Snorka)

130pts - "Grog Mindbenda" - Savage Orc Shaman Champion, War Boar

59pts - "Wazz DaNoggin" - Savage Orc Shaman

46pts - "Dagob Moufsmasha" - Savage Orc Boss, shield

250pts - "Da Beastie Boyz" - 8 x Savage Orc Boar Boys, Standard, Musician

170pts - "Da Boyz" - 18 x Savage Orc Boyz, Standard, Musician, shields

200pts - "Da Big 'Un" - 1 x Giant

15pts - "Sommink Undafoot" - 1 x Snotling base

Total 1028pts

Grand Total 2232pts

On to the pics:

And now for the shot you've all been waiting for, the washed up guy, whose just put on a t-shirt for the first time in months and is barely conscious

Plus the hired help insisted we take this one too

So that's that, with magic items I can field up to 2500pts, which is very likely the largest size 4/5th edition you would want to play in order to retain any form of sanity anyway. Once the plague subsides, I'll hopefully be taking them for a spin against a certain skaven force...

For next year, of course I am definitely coming back, and with the changes I will be dipping into some 2nd ed. 40K, likely with IG junglist mastas (somehow I realized I like painting green and Perry twin sculpts).

Anyway congratulations to all who completed the challenge, was a great bunch again this year. Looking forwards to perusing through all the final blog posts and the hype train into next year.

Peace out

Samuel

Brennan's Wrap-up Post (1,203 points)

Hello!  Well this is the end of my third OWAC and I'm excited to get through this chunk of the old lead pile.  First I want to thank the Overlord and all the other folks who have supported the challenge.  It has been a difficult year, but this part has been as good as ever and I appreciate that.

On to the final pictures!  Worksite army photo below...

10 Iron Breakers with Musician and Standard: 240 pts

10 Crossbowmen: 130 pts

16 Longbeards with Musician and Standard: 270 pts

21 Warriors with Musician and Standard: 253 pts

2 Bolt Throwers: 120 pts

1 Dwarf Hero Heavy Armor and Double Handed Weapon: 109 pts
1 Runesmith w/ Heavy Armor (under his clothes ;)): 81

So this was fun.  I haven't done a heavily armored force for the OWAC yet and it had been a while since I had done this much armor anyway.  I tried to keep it bright but with one finger on reality.  I wanted a good bit of contrast from the orcs and gobs I have been working on.  I think fantasy, or sci-fi, works best when there is a hint of reality to keep the brain anchored.  Otherwise, you just descend into a computer generated realm of disbelief...

Well this is me signing off for about 6 months!  Paint well and be excellent to each other...

Nathan’s wrap up

Well I’ve been a busy boy the last week or so finishing off figures - basically so I had full units per the chaos army list in Warhammer armies. I’ve taken pics of those newly painted figures plus the army as a whole as it now stands. I have no idea what the points value of the army would be to be honest - it would have to be well over 5000 I suspect given I played a game of 3rd edition with half the figures a few years back and had no trouble getting 3000 points then. And that was before I have painted up any of the thugs, beastmen and most of the chaos warriors and I only used the chaos dwarf artillery. Anyway enough crapping on from me - here are the army pics:

The entire army with me in my retro VFL jumper and Oilers hat!
Thug archer command group
More thug archers
A couple of very old beastmen
More beastmen
Chas dwarves to finish some of my units off
Chas warrior and marauder standard and a beast master
Mounted warriors

And here are all the units as they now stand:

Two greater demons and a jabberwock
Thugs or marauders with heavy armour, shields and hand weapons
Thugs or marauders with heavy armour and double handed weapons
Trolls
Minotaurs
Slaanesh I chaos warriors or legionnaires - the later for RoC daemonic battles
Thugs with light armour, shields and hand weapons
Summoned demons
Hippogriff and manticore
Thug archers - just need to finish the commander!
Chaos sorcerers
Thugs with light armour and double handed weapons
Khornate chaos warriors/legionnaires
Chaos dwarves with heavy armour, shields and hand weapons
