AdamH's Brets - The Knights of the round table, they dance whenever they're able!

The quest for the grail continues with another three knights complete. After lining them all up together I think the unit is starting to take shape visually however I definitely now feel that I need to add some more details to break up the colours. I am going to go over the unit after the challenge (or maybe next month if I have time) and add some fleur de lys. This month it was time for the command figures, so here we have the unit champion, standard bearer and musician:

I know I still need to add banners and pennants to all of my units, again something I will do all at once, hopefully next month.

Next up we are back to the Knights Errant, these three finishing that unit for the challenge. You may see that some of the liveries on these knights are the same as their full-fledged brothers, I thought it would be cool if some of these knights could come from the same family/house:

So this month I am submitting:

90 – 2x Grail Knights

53 – Grail Knight Champion

96 – 3 x Errant Knights

For a total of 239 points.

For next month, since it is the last one. I have something a bit special planned. Hopefully I will get it done in time!

Lissanne's Chaos Demons- Here he Comes! Ignatz the Handful (275 pts)

Decades ago, I bought this discounted model at Gencon to use as Ignatz...it took the OWAC to actually make me get around to painting it, so three cheers for OWAC!  Plus, I can do a far better job of it than I would have 20+ years ago.  Wanting to finally finish this figure is really why I chose Chaos Demons!
It leaves me a spare chaos dwarf sorcerer, but what the hey!

Since I could, I took the time to do a lot of freehand, on the wings especially.  a fellow named Richard Grey kept posting a Moritarion wing with a beautiful blue eye that inspired me.  The model's actual eyes are inset piggy ones, so now he has pretty blue ones, too.  I had to add a bit of greenstuff here and there, it seems inevitable with all old models, especially on the tail, which I made more dangerous, and under the wings to raise them up.

Here is the fluff from our D&D game, which can be used with Warhammer too.  Ignatz has the shape of a D&D manticore, which is to say a Warhammer lammasu, It has manticore paws on the front, and lammasu hooves on the back, which is a pretty cool idea.

The origins of Ignatz the Handful are unknown.  After being summoned and spreading untold disease and carnage throughout the western lands, he was bound in a perfect gem, a symbol of Law, by an archmage called the Fire Witch.  She placed the binding gem in a circular stained glass window of the image of Ignatz facing front, in the center of his forehead, and the window was placed in the attic of her house.  Now the Fire Witch is long gone.  Oracles have predicted for decades he will soon be freed to wreck havoc and pestilence once more...

So here is Ignatz soon-to-be-freed in all his gory glory.  And this time he will be bringing company...Obviously in the Warhammer world, he is already out and he and his friends spreading his blessings on the general populace.

Ignatz the Handful- Unaligned Demon Prince (275 pts)

This puts me over 1000 pts, but for next month, I hope to do the last 5 demonettes of my pledge, or as many of them as I can, but I have no reason to rush them.  The poor fiends will have to wait for another challenge, as well as the 2nd squad of demonettes.  Lord Ignatz took up a lot of time.  (well, that and my real work).

So, another successful OWAC!

Andrea's Beasts of Chaos 2: moar beasts! (194 pts)

Hi all, OWACers!

Here is the May update of my OWAC2 and it brings the finish of the starting army list plus a couple of recent additions.

To start, the two last dragon ogres: same style of the last month one, different pose. This time I am pretty happy with the painting of scaly pattern and with the fact that all three dragon ogres are no more sitting unpainted in the box after 15 years!

In principle, with these two big guys, I finished the starting list for this OWAC but since I can't sit without always acquiring new stuff, then here are other two beastmen! I am really happy to have found these two particular sculpts: one because I like the pose, the other because I like the very old pieces where the beast is not similar to the classical ram/goat/satyr/and the like. So, guys, here the two gems I get and that I will add to the beastmen unit presented last month:

On the left, a Slaanesh beastman (1988) and, on the right, Gizilgig (C27 series, 1985).

To summarize, this month we have 2 dragon ogres, 87 pts each, and two beastmen, 10 pts each, for  a gran total 194 pts.

OK, and with this post I would have completed the OWAC2 painting... BUT!... I still have a couple of little extras I will try to paint for June!

Ciao, Andrea.

Anthony's May Offering: Of Spiders and Mangonels (203 pts)

A little bit of an eclectic mix this month, boys. First up we have a unit of spider riders. These are going to form part of a larger forest goblin army (eventually..... very eventually). It's a slow burn project, as any goblin army has to be if you wish to preserve your sanity. Since my army is 3rd edition (and forest goblins aren't in it), they are stand-ins for 10 Gobbo Wolfboyz and come out to a total of 110 points.

I quite enjoyed painting them, although painting cavalry is always a pain for me, even in the best of times. I painted the spiders, their goblin riders and the bases separately. The shields will eventually have custom-made decals attached to them, although that is a separate project entirely.

Next, we have an Orc Man Mangler. I've been meaning to paint this model for a long time, being inspired by Kev Adams' amazing paint job on the box art.  Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this model originates from a  time when sculptors painted their own pieces. 1987, to be precise. How things have changed in 32 years!

I initially picked this kit up from a friend, although I soon realized that some of the crew members that came with the model were not part of the authentic crew. As a purist, this simply would not do. Of course, I realized this while prepping the model the month prior to painting it. I was, however, able to find the missing crew culprits on evilbay for a not entirely unreasonable price.

I braved the freehand on the shields as a tribute to Kev Adams' original piece (see box art pictured below it, courtesy of Stuff of Legends). I have also included the original fluff story (also courtesy of Stuff of Legends), since it would be criminal not to. The Orc Mangonel comes in at 93 points, making the points total for the month 203 points

Original Man Mangler box art, taken from Stuff of Legends

Graglug, chief of the Skull Cleaver Orcs, looked down at the mass of timber, rope and metal before him, and shook his head sadly.
"Been worried about you, Bruglodd," he said, "you're goin' stunty." The other looked up sharply.
"Wotcher mean?" he demanded, "I'm as tall as you any day!"
"Nah," persisted Graglug, "Not stunty, I mean stunty! All this makin' stuff. Ain't right. Not what Orcs do. Bet you don"t even know where your sword is in all that junk."
"I can find it quick enough if you want to make something of it," retorted Bruglodd, "Even if you are the chief."
"But all this stuff," said Graglug, "I mean, what's it for?"
"It's a weapon." said Bruglodd proudly.
"A weapon?" gasped Graglug incredulously, "A weapon? Have you any idea how many clubs and cleavers and skull crumpers and bone snappers you could make with that lot? And you're going to make one weapon out of the whole lot? Daft, you are. You'll never be able to pick it up, let alone swing it."
"Not that sort of weapon," Bruglodd assured him, "A special one. Give us a hand and I'll show you. 'Ere, grab this." A heavy wooden beam was thrust into Graglug's hands, and before he had a chance to protest that manual labour was beneath his dignity as a chief, he found himself lashing it to the framework that Bruglodd had built.
"That's the way," Bruglodd encouraged him, "Now we can put the wheels on."
"Wheels?" echoed Graglug, "You're not thinking, are you? I mean if you need to build a cart to move it about on, how are you going to swing it?"
"You'll see," Bruglodd chuckled, "Just wait." By now a small crowd of Orcs had gathered round, watching the strange spectacle of their chief helping Bruglodd the Fruitcake build the strange construction. Next, Brugiodd bolted a huge and ugly carved face to the front of the structure.
"Looks just like you, chief," he chuckled.
"Watch it."
Graglug clapped his hand over his eyes as Bruglodd dragged from his cave a huge, twisted piece of thornwood, strung with a thick rope
"A bow," he said, as much to himself as to the crowd, "A bowl What the gutsucking good is a bow you need to carry around on a cart? We're Orcs, you know - Orcs not pansy Elves forty foot tall! You'll never get arrows big enough, for a start."
"Not using arrows," Bruglodd explained, lashing the gigantic bow to the framework, "Using rocks."
"ROCKS?" Graglug almost screamed, "Whoever heard of shooting rocks from a bow? Have you been drinking the lamp-oil again?"
"You'll see;" muttered Bruglodd, dragging out the final piece of the structure. It was a beam of wood, almost fifteen feet long, with a huge metal hand at one end. He fitted it to the structure, then tied the hand end to a winch at the other end of the frame.
"Give us a hand, chief." he said, and the hand slowly descended as the two Orcs worked the winch against the pull of the bowstring. Next, Bruglodd staggered out of his cave with a large rock, which he put in the hand.
"Watch this," he said, winking at Graglug *
He cut the rope holding the arm to the winch, and the pull of the bowstring snapped the arm up. The rock flew through the air, landing some distance away with a crash.
The assembled Orcs murmured in awe. Graglug scratched his head, speechless.
"Saw some humans using one once. Mangle-something-or-other, they called it. Wotcher reckon?"
"Could be handy," conceded Graglug, "If you can get some boys to work it. Still reckon it's stunty stuff, though."
"Look at Notlob," argued Bruglodd, "Having those spearchuckers didn't do 'im no harm."
"'Spose so," agreed Graglug, "So what's it called again? Man-mangler?"
"That"s near enough," said Bruglodd. "That"s what it"ll do, anyway."
"Yer," said Graglug, slowly warming to the idea, "Nice one. Got another job for you now, too."
"What?" asked Bruglodd eagerly.
"You can get that rock out of my 'ut and rebuild it - NOW!"

In summary:

10 Gobbo Spiderboyz: 110pts
Orc Man Mangler: 93 pts

Total 203 pts

And with that I have completed the second annual OWAC. I will post pictures of the whole army next month. Thanks for following and good luck to the remaining challengers...

ZeroTwentythree's May Sea Elves (217 pts)

I've squeaked by this month...

Elf Sea Wicth (lv. 10) ...... 118 pts
Sea Elf Champion (lv. 5 with light armour) ..... 50 pts
3 Sea Elf Spear (incl. standard) ..... 44 pts
Small terrain ..... N/A

May Total: 217 pts.

Work has been... demanding, and I'm spending half the month away from home. So I loaded this month's entry with some points-rich models -- the mage and champion. With the addition a few rank & file spear-elves and standard, that brings the unit up to a tidy 20 figures (see below). I've hit a mental block on the actual standard, so I'll go back and paint something more interesting on it when I've got a minute (or two) to settle down and paint something worth while.

I also painted a small piece of themed terrain -- a giant shell, no doubt one left behind by the giant snails of the marshes around Marienburg.

And finally, a pic of the now 20-strong unit of spear elves. Not only to give context to the new figures, but anyone skimming this post without bothering to read will hopefully see a bunch of minis instead of just the five that I actually painted this month and think that I've painted a lot of minis in May...

One month left and I'm a bit worried. Work stress and travel will be continuing through June. It would really suck to drop out in the last month! So I'm fired up to finish! My plan is to paint the chariot and the remaining (8?) spear elves that I own.

Tom's Dwarfs, Month Five (234 points)

Straight in, no messin'

Dwarf General:

Here he is - a Norse Dwarf, based on a White Dwarf sculpt, which is why I think he's more than capable of leading my throng. I like trying to paint up all the White Dwarf models. I've a few more to do but I think this fellow completes a set of particular sculpts based on a White Dwarf....

Another, older, White Dwarf that I painted this month too... This is the one I think that the others are based on - see the group shot pic below :)

A group shot - models ranked in order of axe size...

As an aside (and many thanks to Dwarf aficionado Iain Aitkin for pointing me in the direction of this link in the BugmansBrewery forum), here's a model list of all the White Dwarfs, with some interesting results :) LINK

The Goblobber.
Built on a base made from plasticard and milliput, this is the second Goblobber I've painted. The upright struts are pinned into the axle base. Having already dropped this, I'm pleased to report that due to the pinning, it survived!
I've gone for a brighter scheme, and I'm very happy with it. Pics ahoy!

I ummed and ahhed over adding the runes on the struts, but I hope they've come out well, although one side is kinda back to front :)

And, at long last....the Crew:

(sorry in advance for the super dark pics, you'll have to try and imagine them the same brightness as the Goblobber pics)

Eventually these were all good to paint, I just lacked the motivation  for them. Once I'd actually put a bit of paint on one of them, they all followed suit :)

The Chef with the Meat - painted in an earlier month! Also, it was a pain painting the netting holding the goblins. In the end it turned into a little bit of a 'rush' job, but I'm leaving them as they are. Also, strangely, I always seem to paint pipes an off white colour...

A group shot - still a dark pic soz, but it's nice FINALLY having this war machine fully painted!

This completes the points quota for this month - now onto some EXTRAS...

Having previously stated that I don't like painting was machines, I seem to have painted a huge number of them during this challenge. Maybe I'm coming round to them.
Anyway.

Here's another cannon - the one still available from Foundry. It didn't come with an axle, so I used a matchstick:

The wheels were a bit of an experiment - with the blue and white. Having gone for a dark cannon body, I thought it needed a bit of colour.
The crew though are yet to be completed...

Another cannon. This one far more fearsome. And flamey.

The drip is a big blob of PVA glue, and then a dab of superglue on top to 'set' it. I went for the orange liquid as I have another flame cannon who's liquid is green.
I was in two minds as to whether I should paint the wheels blue and white like the cannon. In the end, I don't think it looks too bad as it is, so I decided to leave it and push on with another model. Namely the crew...

And a group shot:

An extra warrior to replace a musician (or standard) if I merge two units together... I was a little gutted that I broke the tiny hammer from his helmet off when I dropped him whist painting him. He'll mix in well enough though...

I then got a little carried away and painted a few more warriors...
First up, some dudes with axes. They'll be the start of an extra rank of the Imperial Dwarfs with...axes.

Some extra Homestead Dwarfs. There's the ebay guy with red eyes from last month, stripped and repainted; there in the middle.

Here's a dwarf captain on the left and another Homestead/Imperial on the right.

Also, I painted a cannon crewmember to join the two from last month. I hated painting him for some reason, so he lack a little lustre...

Now on to what was promised a couple of months ago:

Iannick's Tribute: Step by Step.

I was originally going to paint King Gorrin, but I couldn't muster the motivation. This little dude however, was ideal. He should also be able to be used either as an objective, or as fluff as Iannick is currently painting his Undead Army LINK.

I like step by steps.

Other people's step by steps that is.

I like them just to see how the paint has been layered, the mistakes that get covered up later and all that jazz, although they usually heavily remind me of this:

Whilst doing this one, I would forget to take pictures as I'd get kinda carried away whilst painting.

This dwarf was painted in two main sittings - I took a long break when I applied the ground paint and another when I applied the wash for the ground.

The base was a bit of Standard Milliput, and then some sand superglued on. I based it in the morning, left it to dry, and spray painted the undercoat using Hycote Grey Primer in the late afternoon. Then I left it to dry overnight.

1: Metal first (Gunmetal Grey) then the cream (Menoth White Base), then the blue ((Cygnar Blue Highlight)

2: Sleeves (Green Ochre), Shoes (Smokey Ink). I've given the cream stripes a wash with Seraphim Sepia and the blue stripes a wash with Drakenhoef Nightshade

3: Bag and Tights (Flat Green)

4: Flesh: A mix of Midlund Flesh and French Mirage Blue. The beard is a mix of negro Black and Coal Black

5: Base, Agrellan Earth.

6:  Wash the base and the flesh with Agrax Earthshade. I think I also washed the metal with Nuln Oil

7: Highlight the cream strips. 1st: Meonith White Base, 2nd add a little Ivory, 3rd pure Ivory

8: Highlight the blue stripes. 1st Cygnar Blue Highlight, 2nd adding a little Electric Blue, 3rd pure Electric Blue. I'm sure I added a tiny forth highlight by adding some Ivory into the Electric too.

9: Highlight the shoes 1st a mix of Flat Brown and Red Leather, 2nd pure Red Leather. I might have added a 3rd by adding some Meonith White Base to the 2nd mix.

10: Paint the belt Flat Brown (I think I mixed a little Red Leather in there too). Paint the buckle and the cufflinks and the button on the bag with Old Gold.
Drybrushe the metal with Silver

11: Highlight the skin. 1st a mix of Midlund Flesh and French Mirage Blue. 2nd add Ryn Flesh to the mix. 3rd pure Ryn Flesh. I might have added some Ivory for a 4th small highlight...
Highlight the sleeves with 1st Green Ochre, 2nd add Ivory to 1st.
I also put a wash of Nuln Oil around the belt and buckle
A mix of Hull Red and Gory red went on for the clothing trim.

12: Paint the eyes. I paint a stripe of black (in this case it was Negro Black), and then add two small white dots, using Ivory, for the whites of the eyes.
The cloth trim got a mish mash of highlight (if you can call it that) using whater reddish colour I had wet on the palette. Mostly Gory Red, Red Leather and I think I also added a bit of Sun Yellow (although I feel I might as well have skipped this, and stuck with Red Leather)
Blood was added to the hand using Hull Red and Gory Red.
The belt was terribly highlighted using Flat Brown and Ivory (which When mixed together produce almost a muddy lilac colour. I should have stuck to good old Red Leather...)
Gold bits got a little touch of Shining Gold

Skin was coloured using Drackenhoef Nightshade and Druchii Violet. A little thinned down Gory Red on the nose. The photo doesn't really pick it up.
The green tights and bag werewashed with Coelia Greenshade at some previous point, and then highlighted with Flat Green, whilst adding Lime Green in three stages.
Rocks were roughly drybrushed with French Mirage Blue with added Ivory in three stages. The sides of the base were repainted French Mirage Blue (it has excellent coverage), and when dry painted Ordic Olive (which has poor coverage). I also drybrushed the beard for highlights at the same time. I added a tiny bit of Coal Black to the mix though.
Tufts and Flowers added - glued on with superglue.

I could paint up a few more EXTRAS.
I should make my banners for my banner bearers.
Who knows! Either way, there's a lot of options, and I'm looking forward to finishing and showcasing off the army as a whole.

Until next time - laters!
