Nicolas' Chaos Demon Horde of Tzeentch

 Here it is, my army to become in the next 6 months;

The chaotic demon horde of UmussLanj'Vin, the Lord of Change. (5040pts)

There is still assembling and paint stripping to go through, but I shall keep you guys up to date as it goes.

UmussLanj'Vin

1 x Lord of Change 

This Greather deamon was/shall be sommunded by Velok the recruter. His contribution to the falling of Praag did not go unnoticed, and Vin knows that to be a great opportunity to reach the mortal Realm. Having landed seeds in 3 regions of the Oldworld, he considered the first havest wood bare its fruits.

Happily giving no "armywise" points, the demon lord of a Chaotic army is free, because it considers it will face an army with an equivalent lord/demon army. 

Banners:

The army will include 2 magical banners. It is interesting to read the original descriptions from The Lost and the Damned. The banners, being demons themselves, have their very own lifes. Their abilities are also very potent, although it is hard for me to judge if they are cost effective. I decided to include them as individual figures since I plan to create the miniatures that would best suite their physical description and behaviors.

1 x Daemon Devourer

200 pts

This banner is said to contain the souls of lost creatures, snake-like necks arboring the heads of all sort of beings constantly emerging out of it and going back inside it. In close combat, it generates 10 attacks of strengh 7, which makes it a great monster hunter! As for the miniature, I picture a merge between an hydra and the lower body of an horror. I simply do not know if I will opt for a 25x25 human sized creature or push the envelope and make it a huge 50x50 based monster.

Again, this banner should be a living cloth weilded by an horror. The representation of the Eye of Tzeentch, attacking from a distance only by gazing to the ennemy.  I will make it a huge eye merged into an horror... and in the process try not to have it look like Bob Razowski from Monsters Inc.

The Thumbsuckers

A childish sight to whoever see them in a quick sight. A dreadful call to the past to others. 

Their suction cup shaped fingers are meanth to one purpose, drain your thoughts and use it against whoever may be facing them.

Paul's Gribbly Beasts - Wrap up post

Well here we are, the end of a long but rewarding road. My Chaos Beasts of Nurgle army is complete (for now) and I managed to finish everything I had planned for my first OWAC and a little bit more. Am I chuffed with this result? You bet I am!

Here's the break down of monthly points values....

Month One: Total 200 pts

2 x Beasts of Nurgle 75 pts each = 150 pts

5 x Beastmen 10 pts each = 50 pts

Month Two: Total 200 pts
Beastman Lord = 200 pts
Month Three: Total 265 pts

5 Beastmen - 10 pts each = 50 pts

2 Minotaurs - 40 pts each = 80pts

5 Nurgling Bases (30 pts each) = 150 pts

A few more shots of the whole army as it would actually be fielded, with the addition of a few more Plague Bearers and a couple of Trolls that were already painted to make those units legal. This would push it above 2000pts and with magic items etc., and the Beastman Lord upped to a Shaman Lord, I could probably field 2500 pts in 4th/5th edition. I'd like to say thanks again to everyone involved for making this such a great challenge as there is no way I would have this army painted and playable in six months without the OWAC. Special shout out to Iannick for all his hard work running it :)

So if we were lucky enough that there was a third OWAC what might my plans be for next time?

I'm tempted by a mixed force of Humans, Dwarves, and Halflings as a Dogs of War contingent, but I'm not sure my current mix of models would conform to army list minimums, although it would be loads of fun to paint. 

High Elves might also be an option, as I am falling behind in my ongoing project to complete the Elven Host I started when I was 14. I'd want that to be an entirely new contingent to my existing largely infantry based force, so that would be fun to plan and paint, but then it might be more fun to add a force of Wood Elf allies which I've always said would only come after my High Elves were finished (so never at this rate). That's another great thing about the OWAC, it really gives you license to indulge and enjoy all that mental army building that so many of us enjoy. I'm sure I'll come up with something completely different by the time it comes round again :)

What next for the Gribbly Beasts? Well, they are going straight into foam storage and carrying cases...

or How to do figs for Warhammer 40k in a Warhammer Fantasy Challenge

Since I really don't play fantasy much (and already have a high elf army from OWAC I)  I chose Chaos Demons in order to paint some of those lovely figs that were gathering dust.  They are useful for WH40k, and also D&D, which I play several times a month.  Ignatz was designed with a D&D demon in mind actually!
 

Pluses:  Chaos, especially demons, is a small enough force I can get the figs painted to an acceptable standard to me.  Some of the elves I did last year I felt a little rushed, but I didn't feel rushed with this army, nor did I slack off.  I got to paint my demon lord Ignatz to the nines, the way I wanted to.  Which was my main goal.  Not to mention the painting on the traditional Dragon Ogre and the Chaos Spawn which I am very happy with!  Actually, I am pretty satisfied with everything this time around!

Regrets:  Not having time to do the fiends, which were more meticulous conversion.  Turned out it was demonettes or fiends, and the demonettes won.  Ah well, the fiends wait for the future.

I was wondering about next OWAC.  Like I said, I don't really play much fantasy.  Maybe more chaos?  Maybe Bloodbowl?  THEN, an entire army of skeletons on the sprue was dumped in my lap this month (no, I mean literally)  Nearly 200, with the promise of more, many more.   I run painting classes at conventions, you see.  And then my bestie gave me a pile of undead hobbits.  It seems the dead are calling to me. So, this seems the perfect time to finish those Catacombs of Terror figures, and the Upstream Game House figures, and my unfinished Warhammer Quest monsters, who are all undead allies for some reason. Which makes an army.    I already put everything in a tupperware. This should be similar time wise to demons, because Contrast-y painted skeletons are super fast and look great, and I can do meticulous painting on my Catacomb/Upstream figs then!  There is an extra month to clean and assemble, and I have tested the skeleton painting, and it is indeed super fast.  Surprise, surprise! 

Well, we will leave that in the future.  Cheers to another successful OWAC!  And Cheers to painting figs that will see the tabletop,  and more Cheers that some of these already have!

Lissanne's Chaos Demons- A closing cheer! (105 pts)

And a little something for my last month- three more demonettes.  Each one takes me so much thought that three is really all I've ever managed in a month.  It leaves me the last two of this set of 10 to finish on my own, not too bad.  I went over 1000 pts last month, but wanted to try to finish this squad, anyway.  Almost!

Two of these demonettes are based on Rem and Ram from the anime Re: Zero.  Ram started life as the Demonette Heartvex, and is the Red Ogre Ram.

And Rem is the lovely unnamed 'Miss 13' from the second casting, as the Blue Ogre Rem.

 

The third demonette is Warptongue, done strictly to the Slave of Darkness color description to see if I could.  The book just arrived recently (long story). White skin and hair, luminous green eyes, pastel tattoos, and bright pastels.  Sort of works, but I much prefer the others.  She blends in well enough though.

The SoD description is rather too lawful for me, one right breast and all the same, when there are so many colors to choose from!  (not to mention body parts to choose from!)  The writers certainly needed to up their chaos game!  SoD turns out to be so tame.  And I don't think pastel tattoos work, but it sure sounds good in the book.

Not to mention I was busy with work (again) and distracted this month painting things like a group of 10 'Beastmen' with musician, (1/2 size killer rabbits LOL! alas, they don't fit in the army, except figuritively ie f*** like bunnies) and fiddling with homemade 'Kontrazt' paints which works like gangbusters!

Final Fluff:
Ram and Rem, the Red Ogre and the Blue Ogre.  Immensely strong sisters who are fight together, they are always there when things get too much to handle. And the last sister, Warptongue was adopted from another group of demonettes of which she was the only survivor.

For the record- Ignatz's family gets their names from the family of Ignatz the mouse from Krazy Kat, his wife Magnolia, and his kids Milton, Marshall and Irving.  Maybe Marshall and Irving will show up in some later challenge. 'Ignatz the Handful' comes from an old obscure Dennis the Menace strip, where Dennis asked his mother his zodiac sign, and she said 'Ignatz the Handful'  It just stuck for our D&D demon.

Two successful OWACs for me with no mulligan month. Happy to have the challenge behind me!

Lissanne's Chaos Demons- Here he Comes! Ignatz the Handful (275 pts)

Decades ago, I bought this discounted model at Gencon to use as Ignatz...it took the OWAC to actually make me get around to painting it, so three cheers for OWAC!  Plus, I can do a far better job of it than I would have 20+ years ago.  Wanting to finally finish this figure is really why I chose Chaos Demons!

It leaves me a spare chaos dwarf sorcerer, but what the hey!

Since I could, I took the time to do a lot of freehand, on the wings especially.  a fellow named Richard Grey kept posting a Moritarion wing with a beautiful blue eye that inspired me.  The model's actual eyes are inset piggy ones, so now he has pretty blue ones, too.  I had to add a bit of greenstuff here and there, it seems inevitable with all old models, especially on the tail, which I made more dangerous, and under the wings to raise them up.

Here is the fluff from our D&D game, which can be used with Warhammer too.  Ignatz has the shape of a D&D manticore, which is to say a Warhammer lammasu, It has manticore paws on the front, and lammasu hooves on the back, which is a pretty cool idea.

The origins of Ignatz the Handful are unknown.  After being summoned and spreading untold disease and carnage throughout the western lands, he was bound in a perfect gem, a symbol of Law, by an archmage called the Fire Witch.  She placed the binding gem in a circular stained glass window of the image of Ignatz facing front, in the center of his forehead, and the window was placed in the attic of her house.  Now the Fire Witch is long gone.  Oracles have predicted for decades he will soon be freed to wreck havoc and pestilence once more...

So here is Ignatz soon-to-be-freed in all his gory glory.  And this time he will be bringing company...Obviously in the Warhammer world, he is already out and he and his friends spreading his blessings on the general populace.

Ignatz the Handful- Unaligned Demon Prince (275 pts)

This puts me over 1000 pts, but for next month, I hope to do the last 5 demonettes of my pledge, or as many of them as I can, but I have no reason to rush them.  The poor fiends will have to wait for another challenge, as well as the 2nd squad of demonettes.  Lord Ignatz took up a lot of time.  (well, that and my real work).

So, another successful OWAC!

Paul's Gribbly Beasts: Month Four (235 points)

The presence of the foul choatic beasts thronging around Goat Hill had started to have an effect on the very land around them, and the creatures dwelling there.

The mutating nature of chaos had reached out into the land and twisted what it found. The famous giant hounds from the plains east of Felmoor were hunting in packs. Having sprouted horns and bony spurs, claws lengthening like knives, these were no longer mans best friend...

It's touch reached into farms and cattle sheds, melding man and beast into hideous goat and bull headed abominations to swell the ranks of the Warband.

The Grandfather was surely pleased with such corruption and The Watcher smiled a sickly grin as  the portal pulsed to life, vomiting forth a huge, slug-like, Daemonic Beast of Nurgle on a tide of maggots and filth...

Well, I certainly wasn't expecting April to be the slog fest it was but my work/life balance has been all over the place and I'm damn sure that if I didn't have the OWAC to keep me on track I would have done zero painting this month. As it is I'm really chuffed to have produced what I have, even though I'm not 100% happy with the finish on some of these.

First up we have a small unit of middlehammer era Chaos Hounds. Not may favourite Chaos Hound sculpts by a long shot but I felt like they fit the army theme and have given them the alternate red-yellow-grey colour scheme as I can see them doing duty in a number of armies/games and didn't want to overdo the Purple. This also ties in with the beastmen and previous two Minotaurs, and helps feel like they are part of a identifiable group or retinue within the Warband.

I mentioned last month that I have a new found love of painting Minotaurs thanks to the OWAC, so I decided to strip a couple of second hand Marauder Miniatures Minotaurs that I've had for quite a while and add those to the mix. Slightly regretting not taking pictures of the previous owners paint jobs for posterity as they had a certain charm even if they were a bit 'Brother Clarence'.

Added to these two classics is a new sculpt from Krakon Games which was part of their recent AxeGrind KS. I really like the oldhammer-esque "pathetic aesthetic" on this and there is a beastman from the same range with a similar vibe that I hope to include before the challenge is done.

These three have certainly not diminished my love of Minotaurs and I'm going to think about acquiring some more in the future. Probably not for this years OWAC though... probably...

Finally we have a Trish Carden (nee Morrison) sculpted Beast of Nurgle, with a bodge-job set of replacement tentacles on the right hand side as they were missing when I purchased it. It's a funny old sculpt and I still prefer the original (my wallet doesn't though!) but I like it a lot more now it is painted up and it definitely has the 'killer-slug' vibe that all good Beasts of Nurgle should have.

Slightly naughty of me but I already posted this in the Oldhammer Group's 'Make-a-Trish' competition for April as it was too much of coincidence and golden opportunity to miss. It's been fantastic seeing Trish share so many unique memories and photos with the community and hats off to the lads on the Oldhammer Group for organising such a fitting tribute! :D

So the breakdown for the month is:

5 x Chaos Hounds (8pts each) = 40 pts
3 x Minotaurs (40 pts each) = 120 pts
1 x Beast of Nurgle (75 pts each) = 75 pts

Total = 235 pts

Next month needs to see the ranks of the beastmen swell considerably if I am to be compliant with the rules by the time we finish, so I can see lots of batch painting in my future but hope to break it up with command figures.

Lissanne's Chaos Demons- the Flesh Failures (261 points)

Until a few years back, figures truly worthy of Slaanesh were hard to come by.  Now there is an abundance of truly outre chaos to choose from.  The downside is they are usually plastic.  The upside is there are so many and so extreme, it is fairly easy to find a good match for your forces, no matter how depraved, violent or putrid.

The source for the Flesh Failures are Sloth abominations from 'The Others'.  The Dogs are Void Hounds from 'Shadows of Brimstone'.    I am a sucker for good sculpts, and the tongues are what attracted me.

3 mighty chaos warriors, their names and race forgotten.  What is remembered is that they were blessed together, fought together, swore allegiance to Ignatz together...and well, devolved together.  What do you expect when mortals join a group of Demons?  Now they are Chaos Spawn.  But on the bright side they still fight together.

And three little puppies, I mean Chaos Hounds.  They seem to look an awful lot like Magnolia the Dragon Ogre...naughty Magnolia, what have you been doing?  You go girl!  Chaos Hounds are supposed to have a handler, but in a force of demons it seems unnecessary.  So here they are, part of the clean up crew, like the Flesh Failures.

So, this gives me a month and a half to work on my Demon Lord Ignatz.  Wish me luck! I have my work AND a mural to do next month.  Will I finish or mulligan in May...hmmm.

Lissanne's Chaos Demons- Mother and child reunion (244 pts)

Originally, I had no dragon ogres when I planned to do demons.  But in November, Blue gave me one for a song, and at Xmas, I got a scorpion person for a gift, who I promptly dubbed Milton.  In the spirit of painting presents I decided to do both for the challenge. Here is unopened Milton, who wasn't in the original silver post.

I didn't want to do a quick shabby job on either of these, or any of this army for that matter, and I especially wanted to do the Oldhammer dragon ogre up well, since it was love at first sight with the model.  I named her Magnolia.  I actually spent most of the month on that figure, and hope it shows!

On Magnolia, I created both a pattern of scales and fur hide armor, and used some NMM flat painting tricks to create a fancy axes on both dragon ogres where there were plain flat blades.  There was a small mystery area on the back of Magnolia which wasn't well cast, so I added a couple of spines, plus it came with no left hand, so it got one, and a nice shield also.  The shield was another present this one from Oldhammer in the New World for entering a painting comp.  Since it was large and looked like it had the Lammasu face of my Ignatz, it was perfect!

Demonettes-

  Echo, a 2nd Lewdfang model. I was not thrilled about painting another snake head demonette that can't be manga-fied at all, but I ended up thinking up a fluff story to make her fit.  Not all the demonettes have a humanish face, but my 2nd this month does, being another Fiendthrob and I dubbed her Miriam Nova as I based her on the anime character Milim Nava.

  On to the fluff:

  Let us depart for a moment from our regularly scheduled post full of depravity, and focus on a doting mother and her growing child

First, I will present the beautiful Magnolia, beloved of Ignatz.  She has a such a winning smile, and is visibly favored by Slaanesh, who graced her body with vivid colors in addition to monstrous fertility.  She carries a shield bearing the image of her Ignatz and slays everything in his name.

Next, on to the lovely child of Magnolia and Ignatz, Milton, who is a bundle of energy.  He has his mother's spines and his father's tail, and counts as another Dragon Ogre.  Who is going to argue with him and tell him otherwise?

Now we return to our regularly scheduled depravity.

2 demonettes- more Cheerleaders of Chaos!

   Miriam Nova tries to look extra cute to cover the fact that when Slaanesh was passing out breasts she didn't get any.  So she wears a padded shirt and pretends.  Always hungry, she has a tendency to eat her playmates too early and then look for more.  Watch out- you may be next!

Echo-  Snaketongue was gifted an unusual ability by Slaanesh.  When she is about to enter combat, a shadowy blue duplicate of her fights independently with her and the others in her unit, and disappears when the battle is over.   The demonettes are always alerted for an upcoming battle by the appearance of Echo, as they call her.  Very useful!

So, this month:  2 Dragon Ogres (87 pts each) and 2 Demonettes (35 pts each) for a total of 244 pts.  And the Demonettes are now a unit of 5 and fieldable.

   Next month I am planning to finish the my 3 half finished chaos spawn (which I was dabbing at this month) , maybe do some demonettes and definitely work on Ignatz.
