Anthony’s wrap-up post

Friends, I am happy to be in such distinguished company. This my second, completed Old World Army Challenge, as it is for many of you. I won't lie, it was tough to paint all these greenskins, although I have only myself to blame for making that choice. I present to you, Rifgit Snapjaw's marauding horde of greenskins:

The army is composed of the following:

Organ gun ...... 102.5 points
10 Gobbo Wulf(spider)boyz ..... 110 points
Orc Man Mangler ..... 93 points
3 Trolls .... 220 points
10 Big 'Uns ... 95 points
Rifgit's Guard. 5 Snortas .... 135 points
11 Arrer Boyz with crossbows .... 126.5 points
2 goblin chariots .... 108 points
Orc Stone Thrower .... 42.5 points
5 Snotling Bases .... 125 points

Total: 1157.5 points
Nothing makes me happier than having my points total contain a numeric fraction. I feel like that alone wins Oldhammer

So where is the big man himself, you may ask? Here he is. He was busy leading the raid of a local empire town,  so he couldn't make it for the picture.

Talking of photography absenteeism, I must apologize for the lack of an Oldhammer pose. You see, I hate taking army shots, mainly because I have trouble bringing everything in focus when I stand in front of the camera with models on the table.

So what's on the table next? Well, I'm not painting more green skin - I can confidently tell you that much! I've gotten into some cool kickstarters (The Others, Rising Sun), so I may take a crack at those before continuing on the greenskins. Next in line for my greenskin army is a forest goblin contingent (60 forest goblins, 20 forest goblin spiders, giant spiders and araknarok's galore etc.)

I must thank the Overlord for organizing this challenge for the second consecutive year. I realize that his relentless shaming, snarky comments and over-inflated ego were necessary tools to motivate a bunch of curmudgeonly grognards to complete the challenge. Although I do find his 'marriage' and 'personal life' excuses to be a little on the whiny side!

Until next time, happy painting amigos! And thanks again, Iannick, for strengthening the Oldhammer community through your efforts with the OWAC.

Anthony’s June Goblins (102.5 points)

While I completed my 5 x 200 points last month, I thought I’d paint something extra for my ‘free pass’ month. Here it is - a counts-as organ gun with 3 goblin crew.

Not much additional musings this month, since I am quite burnt out from the painting perspective. See you next month for the wrap-up post!

Note from the Overlord : you still get your points Anthony if you keep producing! So here's 102.5 pts!

Anthony's May Offering: Of Spiders and Mangonels (203 pts)

A little bit of an eclectic mix this month, boys. First up we have a unit of spider riders. These are going to form part of a larger forest goblin army (eventually..... very eventually). It's a slow burn project, as any goblin army has to be if you wish to preserve your sanity. Since my army is 3rd edition (and forest goblins aren't in it), they are stand-ins for 10 Gobbo Wolfboyz and come out to a total of 110 points.

I quite enjoyed painting them, although painting cavalry is always a pain for me, even in the best of times. I painted the spiders, their goblin riders and the bases separately. The shields will eventually have custom-made decals attached to them, although that is a separate project entirely.

Next, we have an Orc Man Mangler. I've been meaning to paint this model for a long time, being inspired by Kev Adams' amazing paint job on the box art.  Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this model originates from a  time when sculptors painted their own pieces. 1987, to be precise. How things have changed in 32 years!

I initially picked this kit up from a friend, although I soon realized that some of the crew members that came with the model were not part of the authentic crew. As a purist, this simply would not do. Of course, I realized this while prepping the model the month prior to painting it. I was, however, able to find the missing crew culprits on evilbay for a not entirely unreasonable price.

I braved the freehand on the shields as a tribute to Kev Adams' original piece (see box art pictured below it, courtesy of Stuff of Legends). I have also included the original fluff story (also courtesy of Stuff of Legends), since it would be criminal not to. The Orc Mangonel comes in at 93 points, making the points total for the month 203 points

Graglug, chief of the Skull Cleaver Orcs, looked down at the mass of timber, rope and metal before him, and shook his head sadly.
"Been worried about you, Bruglodd," he said, "you're goin' stunty." The other looked up sharply.
"Wotcher mean?" he demanded, "I'm as tall as you any day!"
"Nah," persisted Graglug, "Not stunty, I mean stunty! All this makin' stuff. Ain't right. Not what Orcs do. Bet you don"t even know where your sword is in all that junk."
"I can find it quick enough if you want to make something of it," retorted Bruglodd, "Even if you are the chief."
"But all this stuff," said Graglug, "I mean, what's it for?"
"It's a weapon." said Bruglodd proudly.
"A weapon?" gasped Graglug incredulously, "A weapon? Have you any idea how many clubs and cleavers and skull crumpers and bone snappers you could make with that lot? And you're going to make one weapon out of the whole lot? Daft, you are. You'll never be able to pick it up, let alone swing it."
"Not that sort of weapon," Bruglodd assured him, "A special one. Give us a hand and I'll show you. 'Ere, grab this." A heavy wooden beam was thrust into Graglug's hands, and before he had a chance to protest that manual labour was beneath his dignity as a chief, he found himself lashing it to the framework that Bruglodd had built.
"That's the way," Bruglodd encouraged him, "Now we can put the wheels on."
"Wheels?" echoed Graglug, "You're not thinking, are you? I mean if you need to build a cart to move it about on, how are you going to swing it?"
"You'll see," Bruglodd chuckled, "Just wait." By now a small crowd of Orcs had gathered round, watching the strange spectacle of their chief helping Bruglodd the Fruitcake build the strange construction. Next, Brugiodd bolted a huge and ugly carved face to the front of the structure.
"Looks just like you, chief," he chuckled.
"Watch it."
Graglug clapped his hand over his eyes as Bruglodd dragged from his cave a huge, twisted piece of thornwood, strung with a thick rope
"A bow," he said, as much to himself as to the crowd, "A bowl What the gutsucking good is a bow you need to carry around on a cart? We're Orcs, you know - Orcs not pansy Elves forty foot tall! You'll never get arrows big enough, for a start."
"Not using arrows," Bruglodd explained, lashing the gigantic bow to the framework, "Using rocks."
"ROCKS?" Graglug almost screamed, "Whoever heard of shooting rocks from a bow? Have you been drinking the lamp-oil again?"
"You'll see;" muttered Bruglodd, dragging out the final piece of the structure. It was a beam of wood, almost fifteen feet long, with a huge metal hand at one end. He fitted it to the structure, then tied the hand end to a winch at the other end of the frame.
"Give us a hand, chief." he said, and the hand slowly descended as the two Orcs worked the winch against the pull of the bowstring. Next, Bruglodd staggered out of his cave with a large rock, which he put in the hand.
"Watch this," he said, winking at Graglug *
He cut the rope holding the arm to the winch, and the pull of the bowstring snapped the arm up. The rock flew through the air, landing some distance away with a crash.
The assembled Orcs murmured in awe. Graglug scratched his head, speechless.
"Saw some humans using one once. Mangle-something-or-other, they called it. Wotcher reckon?"
"Could be handy," conceded Graglug, "If you can get some boys to work it. Still reckon it's stunty stuff, though."
"Look at Notlob," argued Bruglodd, "Having those spearchuckers didn't do 'im no harm."
"'Spose so," agreed Graglug, "So what's it called again? Man-mangler?"
"That"s near enough," said Bruglodd. "That"s what it"ll do, anyway."
"Yer," said Graglug, slowly warming to the idea, "Nice one. Got another job for you now, too."
"What?" asked Bruglodd eagerly.
"You can get that rock out of my 'ut and rebuild it - NOW!"

In summary:

10 Gobbo Spiderboyz: 110pts
Orc Man Mangler: 93 pts

Total 203 pts

And with that I have completed the second annual OWAC. I will post pictures of the whole army next month. Thanks for following and good luck to the remaining challengers...

Anthony’s Troll-a-la-la la April Submission (220 pts)

Well, April's been a very taxing month due to work and personal life. Also, I've been pretty burned out painting-wise, and I was almost certain that I would be cashing in on my mulligan. I started these trolls last month, which is fortuitous since I don't think I would have been able to muster the motivation to start any model from scratch. Luckily, they are fun sculpts and there's not much in the way of technical expertise needed to paint these fellas. Most importantly, they are not greenskins so I at least get a break from painting green flesh for a month.

Here we have 3 trolls, coming in at 195 points total. These are probably my 3 favorite sculpts from the Bog Trolls range by Drew Williams.  Skin tones achieved by using the Andrea paint set for flesh (which I highly recommend, by the way)

As a further break from painting the greenskins, I experimented with a new rust recipe. I've had this fella primed black in the cabinet for a while, and since he was so heavily armored, he fit the bill perfectly. I also think that he will fit right in with Iannick's undead misfits, so he will be my OWAC tribute to our overlord (and +25pts to my points total for the month, methinks).

Until next time, happy painting (and please send any spare painting mojo my way, if you please).

Anthony’s March Orcs and Snotlings (260 points) and Mid-Challenge Picture

Well, I’m done for March. One of my busiest months work-wise, and remarkably I’m done by the middle of the month. I don’t know how that happened, but I’ll certainly take it. Perhaps my fear of the shame of a mulligan spurred me on to be extra productive. Well, enough psychology, more pictures.

Today I bring you two units. The first is a unit of orc Snortas. These are the elite orc cavalry of 3rd edition. I used the new orc cavalry from Knightmare Miniatures, as they are significantly larger than the marauder orc cavalry and thus more befitting of elite cav. I painted them in the same scheme as my Big ‘Uns (see pic at end of the post).

5 Snortas on warboars for 135 points

I’m stark contrast from a size perspective are these fellows. 5 bases of puny snotlings. I intentionally made their skin a different color (the old Snot green color) so that they would look like a different species from their Orc cousins. These are some of my favorite Oldhammer models. The sculpting is not the best, but their comic gestures are distinctly Oldhammer in spirit.

5 snotling bases at 25 points each for a total of 125 points

And last but not least, here is a group shot at half way through the challenge.

The list stands as follows:
  • 10 big 'uns = 95 pts
  • 5 snortas = 135 pts
  • 11 arrer boyz with crossbows = 126.5 pts
  • 2 goblin chariots = 108 pts
  • orc stone thrower = 42.5 pts
  • 5 snotting bases = 125 pts
That makes a total of 632 points

I must admit that I'm really getting burnt out painting green. I've prepped some undead and I hope to paint some of those models on the sidelines to get my painting mojo back on. Otherwise, I might have to pull the 'M' out for April after all.

Keep happy painting
-Anthony

Anthony’s February Orcs - Big ‘Uns and Boulders (137.5 pts)

Hi guys, and welcome back to the continuation of my Orcs and Goblins saga. This month, my offering consists of 10 big 'uns and an orc stone thrower. These guys will join the chariots and crossbow orcs I painted last month.

I've been itching to get my hands on these orcs ever since Diego released them a few months back. Thanks, OWAC 2, for giving me an excuse to paint them. I started on these guys late in January and I'm quite pleased with how they turned out. While they are quite a bit bigger than 'regular' 3rd edition orcs, their Oldhammer vibe makes them well suited for use as big 'uns. I love their pointed snouts - it gives them a feral look that fits the orcs perfectly.

10 Orc Big 'Uns (95 pts)

In order to break up the monotony, my OWAC painting strategy consists of painting a mixture of rank and file troops and 'special' pieces (characters, war machines, or even other pieces from other armies). We'll see how well it turns out.

Front glamor shots ...

... and arses.

More fronts ...

... and more arses.
Keep your eyes peeled for their mounted brethren who will be making an appearance later on in this OWAC.

What's an orc army without some artillery that is just as likely to wreak havoc on your own troops as it is is to damage the enemy? I present to you the Marauder orc stone thrower.

Orc Stone Thrower (42.5 pts)
Until next month, happy painting!

Anthony’s Orcs and Goblins - Of Crossbows and Chariots (234.5 pts)

Well, here we are at month's end of OWAC II, and I've managed to paint up some Orc Arrer boyz (with crossbows) and a couple of goblin chariots. I just love these particular orc sculpts and, since this will be a detachment of an existing army, I've kept a consistent color scheme of muted earthy tones with orange as the spot color.

Poky Git's crossbow orcs (126.5 pts)
Why 11 orcs rather than 10? Why not?
Backing up this fine firing squad are 2 goblin chariots. I was advised by better generals than myself that these guys should be run in units of two (like I ever game ...). And it just so happened that I recently acquired 2 of these chariots. Perfect!

2 goblin chariots (108 pts)

And here they are with the two that I have that are already painted

Not sure what I'm going to paint for February, since I have quite a busy month coming up. I'd hate to be the first in the challenge to utter the 'M' word. Then again, perhaps better army selection for the painting challenge would have been the smart thing to do ...

Anthony’s Orc and Goblin Army - Introduction

Hello all - I’m Anthony from Pennsylvania (USA) and this is the second OWAC I’m participating in. I’ve gone back and forth trying to decide what army to go with for this challenge. I went for a ‘minions of chaos’ 3rd ed. army for the first challenge. Lots of chaos thugs and beastmen. I have a lot of unpainted orcs/goblins and chaos in my existing collection and it was therefore going up be one of those armies for the OWAC. I have also set myself the impossible task of painting every  miniature in my collection, and I periodically make a tally of that on my blog, to keep me honest (I'm at around 60% painted, as it stands). Paint challenges like this motivate me to boost my output towards reaching my ultimate goal.

I decided to go with Orcs and Goblins (3rd ed) for this challenge since there were not many of them in the OWAC. Forest goblins may also be making an appearance (used as regular goblins for 3rd ed), although it will depend on how busy I get.

This list I'm painting for OWAC 2 will be adding a detachment to my existing 3rd edition Orc collection, which stands as follows:
I bought this army about a year ago, and most of it was commission painted because I wanted to have it done before Oldhammer in the Jerz. I will be emulating the same paint scheme for my OWAC 2 detachment.

In true Oldhammer fashion, I have written up my list on one of the old Warhammer Unit Record Sheets:

Here are some of the prepped models you can expect to see in OWAC 2:

I look forward to participating in the challenge. Last year's was a lot of fun.

Happy painting!
Anthony
