Chris P's Rank and File Month 2 - Freebooters!

Freebooter Kaptain: 35 pts
Gretchin Assistant: 3 pts
9 Freebooters: 108 pts
Total 146 pts

I had wanted to do a mob of Freebooters this year, but I was hamstrung by only having four of the original pirates in my collection. Then I stumbled across a Kickstarter project for new pirates, sculpted by none other than Kev Adams. And there were six of them, plus a booty-laden grot! And thus a mob was born.

The newer sculpts are a touch bigger than the originals, but not devastatingly so. Quite impressive casting too - each of them, even the Kaptain and the canoneer, is a one-piece metal model, and they're all loaded with detail, character, and interesting textures to paint. I also picked up a few plastic bits from the Gorkamorka box recently, which gave me some interesting arm options for the classic crew (plus a nice big curved sword from a Battlemasters orc!).

The Kickstarter also gave me inspiration for the paint scheme, since the example models were painted with rich burgundy coats and bright yellow piping. I like having a Freebooter scheme which clearly stands out from the regular ork clan colours. Vivid blue and orange squig-hair helped with this too. And then there's the Kaptain, a frankly ludicrous Cybork monster, who got a more weathered variation on burgundy for his clanking armour, plus a thinned coat of Contrast paint to make his squid-squig buddy look suitably damp. All-in-all, these guys took a long time to paint, but were a whole heap of fun!

Tom's June Bad Moon Orks (61points)

Rank and File month 4

Oueff! The last month of painting - and not a moment too soon! Real life is hectic, motivation has waned and the grind on these last few models is very real indeed... This month is the first time I've had to lean on the rules and submit 10 models rather than 200points.

Here's a pic of this months models (For the first pic = the post banner pic)

I had such great plans for this month; I really wanted to finish off some models that I put a bit of paint on throughout this challenge, but not completed. Another dread and a buggy for one.

There's a load of boys to paint also, and I hope to paint at least another 10, hopefully (realistically) sometime before Christmas. Bikers and wartraks and buggies and big gunz will have to wait a little longer.

Anyhow - on to the models I have actually painted:

Runts for the Runtherds!

Sorry for the blurry pics, I blame the new phone... Anyhow, I enjoyed painting these fellas up. They're smol, but simple - I like them :)

I painted the banners moon as slightly worried. Kinda apt...

This guy 👇 has some freebooting aspirations...

Runtherds:

A snakebite sculpt in freebooting colours. I liked painting this guy - he's responsible for me getting my painting mojo back (just knuckling down and a few 10min sessions over a couple of mornings, and then awaaaay!)
Here's the runtherd that runs the squig catapult and crew. Surprisingly I've painted him not in stripes. Half of this was for motivations. I just wanted some easy colour choices, and that deep blueblack was an easy choice to make.

These runtherds also love their squigs, so here's a couple to keep them company. These are also good motivation boosters as one can go from undercoated to finished in an evening, with maybe a bit of paint on something else at the same time.

Crew for the big guns. These guys, because I HAD to paint them ,  sucked the life out of me. I was relieved to get them done, and to be fair once I started on them  they painted up quickly. Just that initial push was a proper sticking point.

Standard bearer for da ladz. Well, he can be a stand in army standard bearer if I need one - and what's more, I don't need to actually paint a banner. Win!

And to finish off the freebooter mob (for the purpose of the OWAC - I've still like 7 more to do!) these guys:

Holy moley, look at the size of this guy! He must be particularly shtoopid to not be the top dog though. Either way, his martial prowess has garnered him some serious firepower.

I also painted a banner for the dreadnaught from last month :)  It's super simple, but at least it's done.

Well, that kinda wraps it up - sorry no extras, but as a bonus here's a cracking group shot of all the runtherds. I really like them and I'm super proud of them! I believe I might have one more to paint, and then that's all the runtherds accounted for... Some of the squigs I had painted before the challenge, and I include them in this pic for artistic licence.
Fingers crossed I'll have some proper decent photos of da lads, with some proper lighting and focus for the round-up and army shots next month.

Laters!

Tom's Bad Moon Orks (323points)

Rank and File month 3

Fist things first - a nice banner pic:

Anyway...

This month sees me struggling a bit, but fortunately I've managed to paint a few models in the previous months which will boost me through March. I also traded and brought some extra orks... Most of these were traded with hero David - a stand up guy who lives a few streets away who had seen I was painting orks on Instagram and got in touch :)
The Weirdboy, runtherd and freebooters were an auspicious eBay find, especially as I think the runtherd is a rarity...

So, anyway - straight up: some heavy weaponry!

Heavy Bolta #1

Heavy plasma

Heavy Bolta #2

Boys

I get the feeling some of these were very recent eBay finds that I did not snap in front of a timestamp. 😬 Anyhow:

Weirdboy and Minders

Here's the first of the Minder Twins..

And the second:

a bit gutted I didn't fill in the gap between shoulder and arm, but hey - he's painted. (And visibly pinned!)

Weirdboy/Warphead

I love those squigsnacks! And, what self respecting Warphead with a penchant for squigs wouldn't have a snot server?

Bad Ork Freebooters

Ork #1

I took ages deciding whether or not to do those polka dots.. Here's a pic of him without. I thought he just looked like he had painted the top of his head blue...

Ork #2 His brother, I guess...

I like that he's shading his patch vision from the sun... I'm super undecided whether to add a circle of black to the plasma pistol for a nozzle?

Ork#3 - in a fetching stripey jumpsuit...

Posting this pic, I can see that I've neglected to paint the bracelet yellow. I recognise my failing and will be sure to corr...wait. What?

A Bad Mek

This guy and the Dok have become my favourite pair of orks. So much so that I think I'm going to include a unit of bionik boys (as well as those freebooters above),  under their banner. This basically means stripy trousers for everyone!

The Bad Dok hisself

Bad Ork Bionik Boys

As said before, I'm loving the feel of the renegade Bad Ork, and these boys will be taggers along to the main unit of freebooting bad orks. Most of them should sport bioniks to fit the theme, but I guess those without 'improvements' may well end up having a nasty accident, which will surly require the Dok and Meks speshulist skills....

This guy 👇 isn't the brightest of the bunch. In exchange for a big gun, he's joined the squad...

Here's a boy with one of the Doks early eye pieces. Needless to say his skillz have improved since then!

This metal trousered guy is the pinnacle of the Dok and Mek partnership...

Runtbot

This little guy is an epic scale gobsmasher, and will be a filler in the runt/squigherd

Here he is for scale against Sam Nash's epicast homage, which I painted before the OWAC.

And annuva squigherder! Some juice in his beard...

Sooo, that just about rounds off March :)
I'll be heading back to 100% full time work in April, so my painting may be a little negatively impacted but fortunately April will see the Warlord post - which is just him and his retinue. May will be Machines (which isn't that many I'm afraid), and then the plan is for June to be the last rank and file month as hopefully I'll have gotten used to the work schedule again!

I'll leave now, but first here's a group shot of March's BOYS! (Better pics at the end of June)
