Sybou's Chaos dwarfs - OWAC 9, May Post [Leader - 152 points]

 Hello everybody,

a really quick month for me: the Leader month!!!

Here he is, the Lord of Madness himself

This guy coming from the classic chaos dwarf boxset inspires leadership and bossy attitude.

The one I bought was kind of in a bad shape, the minime on his helmet is a bit broken.

I gave him a red armor and a brown beard.

The shield is a classic big hat iconography a burning skull:

Here we are for this month, a cool leader for the mean stunties.

Next month, I should finish my chaos dwarf regiment with banner and musician.

Take care.

Sybou's Chaos dwarfs - OWAC 9, April Post [Rank and file 3 - 144 points]

 Hello everyone,

a quick post to show you the beginning of my chaos dwarf warriors with shield.

Here they are, 12 fellows all in red and black. I think they look pretty good.

They still need the other half of the regiment to finish them totally but that will be for May.

Full armor group

Here you can see 2 marauder chaos dwarf, a citadel one with a mace and finally the famous Napper Grundrin with a full red armor. He looks a bit like a goblin from the Labyrinth movie.

Here we have 3 citadel guys and a marauder one. They look threatening. All their shields come from Hasslefree Miniatures. He was doing back in the day some cool shields. I still have his wooden shields and I keep them for goblins.

Last but not the least, once again 3 citadel guys and a marauder one. This one is almost a beard with a helmet two little hands and barely two little feets. The one named Hairy Hengist on the right is the same vibe with a lots of beards. I loved painting "Axe 3" he s a hairy fellow with a cloven hoof and a horned helmet.
Pointwise, they represent 144 points: 12 chaos dwarfs with heavy armor and shields.

Here we go, that's all i have for April, i hope you like them.

Cheers,

                                                                                                                                            Sybou

Sybou's Chaos dwarfs - OWAC 9, March Post [Wild Cards - 172.5 points]

 Hello everyone

here is what i did for the month of March: my wildcard!

A big lead belcher

Sometimes chaos dwarves create warmachines so unstable and dangerous, it's always better to ask professional goblins crewmen to handle them.

The 2 dwarves are here to be sure, the crew is not fleeing away.

If the leadbelcher explodes, you can always count on more efficient weapons like:

A bazooka!

If you don't find a goblin crew, pick an hobgoblin, they're also cheap.

So here goes the first quarter of 2026. Already half of the challenge is behind us ...

Here is the full month

I noticed that i was progressing pretty well for now. I might be able to add a couple of characters and a whole unit.
Time will tell if I can make a good chunk of a progress on this army.

Take care everyone and untill next time!

Sybou's Chaos dwarfs - OWAC 9, January Post [Rank and file 1 - 345 points]

Hello everyone! Let's go for our first posts of Owac 9!

I started with one of my two big units : The Berserkers!

You can run but you can't hide!

This unit of 20 fighters are ready to take care of monsters units and won't break easily.

Here we got rank 1 with a dwarf slayer who betrayed his old kins. Three classic chaos dwarfs berserkers and a ral partha more recent sculpt.

Rank 2: Again, more traitors! These old slayers are not all with their classic mohawk haircuts and could go easily with chaos dwarfs. I also gave them some different skin colours in order to make them more chaotic.

Rank 3: More bearded fellow with different kind of weapons. I like the one on the left the most, he's like a dwarven Conan the barbarian.

Here is the command group, with more mutated fellas. The boss is the famous Foaming Mad Furrikson!

The complete unit

In order to control these frenetic guys I had to add one of my character to keep them under control:

A half daemonic chaos dwarf wizard!

Here is my post for january a total of 345 points!

For next month, some firepower in order to blast the ennemy.

Cheers                                                                                                                            Sybou

Quin’s Debaucherous Dwarfs - Wrap Up

We've been involved forQuite a while nowAnd to keep you secretHas been hellWe're strangers meetingFor the first time, okay?Just smile and say helloSay hello, then wave goodbye

To wrap things up, here is a look at our banner bearer who I finished at the beginning of July. Otherwise, a few photos of Marak Ahlmund and his sex dwarf entourage. Overall I’m quite happy with the results of this year’s OWAC - I feel rather productive painting most of my chaos dwarf collection as well as a few other bits! And as always it has also been a pleasure watching the other armies come together, some really excellent projects this year!

Quin’s Debaucherous Dwarfs - The Gold Rolls *Wild Card* (310)

Scraping by again, this month I finished up some stragglers from the previous unit of dwarfs with double handed weapons.

C16 Lufin Bristlebeard &
Chaos Dwarf Renegade Pulper Spikehead

An additional dwarf spell caster, I’ll count this as a level 15 chaos dwarf cleric.

C16 Finehorn Deathscream

And the star of the month, an asscannon from oldschoolminis. Counted as a chaos dwarf three man cannon for the time being. It’s point value is particularly accurate for this project 😎

“I’m in a Rolls Royce, look it’s so huge!”

2 Chaos Dwarfs w/ Heavy Armor & Double Handed Weapons 13 points each (26)

Level 15 Chaos Dwarf Cleric w/ Heavy Armor, Hand Weapon & Shield (215)

3 Man Chaos Dwarf Cannon (69)

Total for May - 310 Points

Chris' Chaos Dwarfs - Month 5 - Boar Centaurs and More Artillery - 494 points

I've suffered the usual enthusiasm dip near the end of the project but at the time of writing (23rd May) I'm well into the final unit.  I also have the possible addition of a chaos dwarf juggernaut if I get the time.  This months units are two ass cannons (I have a love/hate relationship with these minis and debated adding them to the army - they are silly).  The boar centaurs are great and were not available as a unit at the time that 3rd Ed came out.

The army so far is looking great, only one more unit to add, happy painting folks.

Chris' Chaos Dwarf Army - 30 Warriors including General and Magician (688 points)

My big unit for this challenge.  The General (Level 15 Hero) and personal retinue including his court  magician (Level 10 wizard).  The unit is armed with two handed weapons, heavy armour and shields.  They were great to paint when I finally got the armour right.

Here is the army so far.  I now have the parts for a chaos Dwarf juggernaught and will try to add it to my last month if possible.

Happy painting folks, see you next month.

ChrisH' Chaos Dwarf Army - Month 1 (280 points)

Very pleased with how these turned out.  They fit in well with the originals I first painted back in the 80's. My biggest challenge was to replicate the re-basing I did about 5 years ago.  Plenty of grim darkness, which suites chaos dwarfs.  20 models with Arquebus, hand weapons and heavy armour.  They don't have an entry in the 3rd edition army book but points would be 14 each totalling 280.  Probably artillery next month - still a few days to decide......

Chris' Second OWAC Army - Introduction - The Chaos Dwarf Host of Zharr Naggrund

I didn't plan to build a chaos dwarf army.  Already having a large chaos army with a chaos dwarf contingent and expected to leave it at that.

That said a complete Chaos Award army came along and I yielded to temptation.   Hence the Chaos Dwarf Host of Zharr Naggrund, ready for paint.

The army consists of 50 chaos dwarf warriors, 16 crossbows, 20 handgunners, 2 bazukas, 4 mortars, 5 boar centaurs, 4 cannons and 2 large cannons.

I may undercoat them this year but am on vacation for Christmas so work will decide if time allows.

There is also a juggernaut but its currently without a crew and will be added later to complete the host, along with a mostly pre-slotta hobgoblin contingent, but they are a challenge for another day.

Finally the overlord offering, ready to be shipped.....

Merijn's Chaos Dwarf host (529 points)

Leader month!

I read once that the 4th and 5th edition intended it to be a game of mighty heroes, powerful wizards, and titanic monsters, with the armies just playing the role of their retinue. And boy did the model line support that. Herohammer has some of the coolest, most characterful hero miniatures in the history of warhammer.

And those monsters! They might not be big by today's standards but back then there weren't that many large models in an army so a monster really was the centerpiece of your horde. And what a lineup of monsters, noble griffons, vicious wyverns, towering dragons. But one of my favorites was the exotic lammasu. It's crazy looks aside, who doesn't love a monster that is likely smarter than its rider?

Conveniently, chaos dwarfs are allowed to bring a sorcerer lord as their general and the lamassu provides a bit of much-needed mobility to the army.

This massive points sink brings my point total up to 924 points.

Merijn's Chaos Dwarfs

The best part of the fourth edition for me was how flamboyant it was. Everything was just that bit more over the top, the colours, the sculpts. I loved it and I still do. And who embodies that flamboyance better than the chaos dwarfs and their giant hats?

2020 has been a crazy year. I ended up dropping out of the last OWAC quite early and even this year my entry comes in at the very last moment. Half my army is still without bases but mailman hasn't come through yet.

2021 still looks like a mystery so I figured I'd keep this OWAC modest to make sure I wouldn't have to drop out again. Those ornate hats can be a pain to paint after all. The nice thing about chaos dwarfs is that half their army consists of greenskins so really a lot of units can pull double duty.

So without further ado, this year I'm painting a modest 1007 point segment of a larger chaos dwarf army I'm using for the 9th age.

We have:

  • A sorcerer general on a lamassu (259 points)
  • 10 blunderbusses (140 points)
  • 10 blunderbusses (140 points)
  • 12 allied squigs and a herder (248 points)
  • 5 goblin spider riders acting as hobgoblin cavalry (70 points)
  • 2 death rockets with their crew still in a bath of paint stripper (150 points)
For a total of 1007 points.

And since I so rudely robbed our overlord of his tithe the first time around, I'm offering up two models this time:

A night horror werebear from my previous army and a nightmare legionnaire.

Tom's Chaos Dwarfs 2984 points - Wrap Up

Woooooooooooooo! Yes!
All done and dusted - just glory shots to go.

I painted all models from an undercoat of GW Wraithbone from a rattle can, and primarily used those new fangled Contrast Paints.
It's a first for me, painting up an army undercoated white, but I wanted the result to be bold and bright. I like it and I'm going to continue with white undercoating. I kinda wish I'd done the same for my imperial dwarfs from last year...

Well - straight into it then :)

The General: Astragoth, High Priest Of Hashut
One of the first models I painted for the army, and one of the reasons I could paint more extras every month, as he’s so expensive point wise, that I could just submit him and be done for the month, whilst cracking on with models for the next month. I continued like that for the rest of the challenge: pretty much always having a completed 100 points for painting done before starting the next month...

As he was one of the first models, I was still playing around with the colour scheme, which is why the arrows on his hat are block colours, rather than the red/yellow fade which prevailed in the end.

Sorcerer with Lamassu
I love this model, and I’m very pleased with how it came out. I remember particularly liking the blue bobble on top of his hat :)

Lord, with Bull Taurus
(Two riders photographed here - the Krungbeast rider with the flag, and the guy I originally painted for the Taurus)

This followed the bull taurus' colour scheme. I was dreading painting the hero and the wings, but in the end they turned out ok. I used some milliput to fill in some gaps too, so it’s kinda a first for me to “sculpt” some fur between the wings and body.

Lord, with Krungbeast (stand in Bull Taurus)
I wish I’d painted the beast in  a slightly different paint scheme. The purple is too cold for my liking, so I think I should maybe have gone for orange into black, but kept the highlights roughly the same warm, light colour throughout... Nonetheless, he’s done and looks suitably imposing!

Sorcerer
There’s a sleeve trim which I kinda ignored, and if I was to paint this guy again, I’d probably try and paint the trim purple...

Lord
My favourite Choas Dwarf model, and I’m pretty pleased with the paint job. I chickened out of black lining the triangles on his hat. Might be a job for future me at some point.

Bull Centaurs
These have been an absolute joy to put together and paint, although I’m not quite sure why! They were all glued together and milliput added to smooth over the larger gaps. The torso was pinned in. Usually I dread prepping models to paint, but this time it was fine. I’ve one more sculpt to find, which in reality means two more models - for that even ranking yo...

Warriors
Loads of them! It took a little while to get into the rhythm of painting them, but there’s something about the old mono pose models which I really like (I remember as a kid I saw them as a nesessery evil and a chore). I’ve been thinking of painting a monopose orc and goblin army for the next challenge, although a Waaaargh in space is very alluring also....
I added the previously mentioned sorcerer to the front rank to square the unit off.

Blunderbusses
I hated painting these for some reason. I think they spent a good four/five months just with a tiny bit of lacklustre paint on them... Naturally there's stil another rank or two to paint. I'll make it a personal challenge to get them done before the start of the next OWAC!

Hobgoblin Wolf Riders
These are all pinned into their wolves, and I'm sure I pinned one of the tails as well. I'm dreading trying to match the wolf colours on the next batch of riders (I've three more to add at a later date)

Hobgoblin Warriors
My gosh, these are expensive models to try and find! Fortunately though I brought the majority of these before this massive interest in them peaked, so in the end it's not so bad. Mind you, it's the reason there's two musicians as it was a 'lucky' ebay find. £10 for one rank and file is too steep for me...

Orc General
He's so chonky. All the little spikes and things made him a little intimidating, and I remember forcing myself not to think about colour scheme or order, and to just pick the brush up and start. I really like him :)

Orc Boys
Brilliant models. I've three more to add later... I think the war machine models work well in the unit, and the snotling is there for the stand in standard bearer/musician duties. Hard to pick a favorite out of these, but if you pushed me I'd say the second one in from the right, in the back rank.

Goblins
Yeah! My favourite from these is the guy far left, second rank in :)

Earthshaker Cannon
Again, one of the first models painted, so block colours on the arrows although the crew were painted much later.. I remember struggling for ages to paint the crew, so the paint job is a little rushed. I should also have made the shell bearers base the same length as the cannons base, but for some reason (probably haste), I didn't. Le sigh

Death Rocket
Again, machine done on the first month. It's still really hard to get a flat red colour 🤣

Hobgoblin Bolt Thrower
I liked doing this model and crew. The extra time painting the dags were well worth it.

War Machine Group Shot

Menagerie of Chaotic Beasts
All the beasts that accompany the army to war. I wanted to paint some models that were not chaos dwarfs, as a refresher. Most of these were painted later on in the challenge, and were painted with the aim of starting and finishing on the same day. The exception were the Jabberwock models, where I tried to paint them with a lot more care, and I'm really pleased how they came out. The terrorbirds were another highlight for me - being very quick to paint and also very striking.

Bob Ross
During the Lockdown I painted up this picture following Bob's guidance here: link
It's for backdrop purposes, although it was great fun painting this as a challenge with my partner, who also painted one.
Really, I need to buy some trees to complete the vibe, but you get the idea :) I'd really recommend it - doing a Bob Ross painting. It was great fun, and it was painted in just over an hour (65min).

Bob's version:

Army Shots

Never realised how hard it was to line up models for a good army shot. Bit crowded there in the middle and at the back; and a bit too open elsewhere, but it'll have to do!
I really have to make some movement trays at some point, but i am very thankful I've put a heavy layer of varnish on them :)

Here's some with the backdrop. I think some trees and bushes would really help, but...

Monsters

Greenskins

Chaos Dwarfs

All of them!

Obligatory Mug Shot

my partner said that she had - and I quote: 'never found me more attractive'. Flipping WIN

As ever, big thanks goes out to Iannick Martin, founder and benevolent Overlord of the Old World Army Challenge.
I’d like to thank Chaos Dwarfs Online (link), especially Malorndk for redoing all the banners in high definition. Also, a lot of this army came from two lucky purchases - one from that there eBay, and the other all the way from Canada via Tim Wegner and the Middlehammer Trading Group on Facebook. Many thanks to him for an excellent deal.

So, there are plenty of models to add to this army. Not least, a unit of Hobgoblin Archers, some Sneaky Gits, a few more Wolf Riders, Black Or.. ahh.Wait. It’s  at least another army’s worth! I guess an army is never truly complete 🙃
Finally, many thanks go to you, the reader. If you’ve left a comment, then doubly so!

Massive congratulations to all the other participating OWACists, it's been very motivating seeing everyone's hard work taking shape (and motivation to paint is everything!).

Hopefully I'll see you all next year - let's hope it's at least a little bit more uneventful as 2020..!

Cheers!
