Graeme's OWAC3 Skaven wrap-up

My first OWAC is done! My lead pile is dented (if you look really closely)! My purveyors of pestilence may have got a little carried away though... sorry 'bout that!

Thanks to Iannick for organizing a great challenge and congratulations to all the challengers who overcame some serious adversity to deliver some truly impressive armies! This has been a weird year so far and it's been great to be part of a little community that share the same passion and have provided support, encouragement and the threat of shaming to keep everyone going. Special mention goes to the other members of #teamskaven, Adam and Brendan - together we managed to delivery the vermin triple whammy in the year of the rat. No mean feat.

Okay, on to the final muster...

- Gnawdoom (level 15 wizard), with hand weapon: 144 points
- Clan Chieftain (Level 5 Hero ), with spear and light armour: 31 points
- 1 Clan Chieftain (level 5 hero), with hand weapon, shield and light armour: 31 points
- 1 Clan Skyre Poisoned Wind Globadier, with hand weapon: 25 points

- Warpfire-thrower team: 81 points - Jezzailachis Team: 39 points
- 3 Plague Censer Bearers: 120 points

- 3 Clan Moulder Beastmasters, with hand weapon, and light armour: 31.5 points
- 16 Giant Rats: 32 points

- 8 Black Skaven, with halberds, and light armour: 60 points

- Clan Chieftain (Level 5 Hero ), with halberd, and light armour: 32 points
- 14 Plague Monks, with hand weapons, and light armour: 82.5 points (including extra 5.5 points for the standard-bearer)

- 10 Clan Eshin Gutter Runners, with hand weapons, light armour, and slings: 140 points

- 2 Clan Moulder Beastmasters, with hand weapon, and light armour: 21 points
- 5 Clan Moulder Rat Ogres, with hand weapon: 190 points

And of course the Offering to the Overlord (25 points) isn't shown, as it's already found its way to Iannick.

So here's what my 1060 points of Skaven look like:

I had been planning to paint more in the last couple of months of the challenge, but I lost my focus. I've got about 40 models in progress on my painting desk and a bunch of scenery sitting not far away. I made a start on some banners too. All these mini-projects vying for my attention meant that none got finished... Still, it leaves me something to do in the months before the next OWAC... :-)

Right, I'm off to feast my eyes on the other submitted armies. See you next time!

JamesP Final* post (*for this challenge, anyways)

Finished…I can’t be finished; I have more minis to paint!

Congratulations to everyone who completed the OWAC lll. Well done. To Those who fell behind I say try again and keep painting.

This was my first OWAC but hopefully not my last. I found following everyone’s progress inspiring. I personally feel I’m the winner as I have the Empire army I’ve always wanted (well, the first half at least) ready for BOYL.

A hearty thanks to Iannick for all the hard work. Your payment will be posted shortly good sir.

I’ve concentrated mainly on the 3rd Ed. requirements for the first half of force with a couple of additions for flavour. And now for some more storyline…

Von Krueger walked through the camp with a sense of purpose. The dour look on his face shocking his men. Moments after entering the command pavilion a messenger began informing all officers of an emergency meeting along with the request of the entire company to gather.
A hush fell over the men as the officers quietly spoke. After a short discussion von Krueger addressed the Sons.
“The Duke of Margritta is very pleased with our success in stopping the invasion from Cantonia. We have provided the Duke with the time he needed to raise a defence force to bolster the border patrols. Well done men!!” despite the good news the men were still silent. “During our meeting the Duke handed me a letter bearing the seal of Kreutzhofen. My father has informed me of increased Orc activity in the Black Mountains. The green skins have been raiding The Empire and Solland is at risk. The last three years have been very lucrative for us and our victories have made allies here in Estalia and beyond. I’ve had the honour of fighting and living alongside of the finest men Solland has to offer. The time has come for us to return to Solland. We will return to our homes, families and friends. We will drive the green scum back to the dingy holes from which they came.” A raucous cheer raised amongst the men. When order returned von Krueger continued “The Duke has graciously offered one of his ships to carry The Sons up the Black Gulf to Matorea. From there we will follow the Tona Dante to Mortensholm, take the Winters Teeth Pass and arrive home. We leave in three days but tonight we celebrate our victory!!” Again the throng cheered followed by chants of Solland and victory.
Von Krueger returned to his officers to start the preparations.

The planning has begun for the second half of my Empire army…

Undead! Bulldoggy Style

Another OWAC in the books!

Oh yeah baby! It's over!!! Now... I always swore I would NEVER, EVER, ever, ever, ever do an Undead army. Why? It never stops. NEVER. I actually started this army in December of 2018 and then bailed out of OWAC 2, and the only reason I started it was because I needed some undead for my Dark Elf sorcerers to summon. Do you see what happens when you mess around with necromancy? Do you want to? Come on in and feast your eyes on FEEEAAAARR!!!

So here is what I completed for OWAC 3... Skeleton Warriors, Archers, a Zombie regiment, Death Riders, and an Undead Chariot. I still have 15 more zombies that have to be painted. As far as painting goes I tried to cheat as much as possible to get units painted up and ready for the tabletop as quickly as possible. The zombies were painted almost exclusively using Citadel Contrast paints and utilized the airbrush extensively.

And now.. here we see the entire army assembled in it's heinous undead glory!! The whole army is a mix of models from different manufacturers which gives it a really unique character. There are a couple models that i'm not a huge fan of and may replace, but overall I'm very happy.

The army is built around a solid core of skeletons and zombies. Two regiments of Skeleton Warriors, one regiment of Grim Reapers, and a (half-finished) zombie regiment.

The main infantry force is supported by a corpse cart in the form of a skeleton on a throne palanquin and undead heroes. As you can see... there are plenty of skeletons to go around. I'm really glad I got an opportunity to paint my Evil Ash model that I picked up as part of a group commission a few years ago.

I'm very happy with how the zombies turned out. Contrast paint works perfectly with all these wonderful Kev Adams sculpts.

What's an army with it's fearless leaders? NOTHING! Check out this spooky Liche boi on his classic Ral Partha zombie dragon!! FUCKING. AWESOME. I love both the rider and dragon models and could barely contain my excitement when I decided to pair them together. I'm happy and I may have slept with this model on my night stand... maybe. (I did)

AAARRGH!! Awesome Marauder Necromancer. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.

awesome.

Next up are a couple Screaming Skull Catapults and archers to support the infantry advance. The archer models are Ral Partha and Warmonger. I'm not a huge fan of the Warmonger archers, but they get the job done. I may just end up buying another pack of the monopose Ral Partha archers to replace the Warmonger ones.

Finally the cavalry! Sixteen Death Riders, a chariot and three Carrion to outflank and roll up my enemies while the skeleton infantry bogs them down. I really had fun painting up the Carrion and their creepy little riders.

I want to thank Iannick once again for running this challenge! This is the second one I've completed and now have two fantastic armies to show for it! Next year I may end up expanding my Dark Elf army from OWAC I.

Also... I totally forgot to do an Armies Pose photo. I took all of these dudes out of the display case and then realized my error after I had put them back up.... and i'm not taking these out again unless i'm taking them to a game. So.... instead your get a photo dump. ENJOY!

UNTIL NEXT YEAR YA FUCKERS! STAY SAFE!

Dave's Wood Elf Wrap Up

Another challenge come and gone! This year, I felt my skills had improved enough to take on my all-time favorite army, the Wood Elves. Now at the end of the challenge I can say that I am quite pleased at the results. The Old World Army Challenge has been, as always, terrific fun and encouragement, both to get better with the brush and to get some more models painted to boot. I want to thank all the challengers, visitors and of course Iannick himself for such great camaraderie and support.

The final Wood Elf army clocks in at 1,358 points. Let's take a look at the breakdown. We have:

GALADRIN'S GUARDIANS OF THE GROVE
Wood Elf General (Lance, Light Armour, Shield, Barded Steed) ~ 172 pts
Wood Elf Sorceress (Mage Champion, Steed) ~ 124 pts
Wood Elf Sorceress (Mage) ~ 59 pts
15 Glade Guard (Champion, Standard Bearer, Musician, Light Armour, Spears, Shield) ~ 244 pts
Wood Elf Chariot (Extra Steeds, Scythed Wheels, Barding, Longbows) ~ 124 pts
8 Dryads ~ 280 pts
Treeman ~ 280 pts
Great Eagle ~ 75 pts

An unusual Wood Elf army perhaps, due to its lack of archers, the Guardians of the Grove rely on the old "hammer and anvil" tactic. The Glade Guard and Dryads absorb the enemy charge and the Treeman and Chariot smash into the flank. The Great Eagle is a useful addition for warmachine hunting and the multiple Sorceresses weave their magic to support the battle line. My first "good" aligned army for the Old World Army Challenge, these bright and colorful models were a joy to paint and I look forward to honing my bright palette with the next army on the painting table. Before that, however (this coming weekend, to be precise!), I will be pitting this army against my previous force from OWAC II in a battle for the ages. Stay tuned to the Herohammer Facebook group for more on that. Until next time!

I've had a flippin' great time painting this. Although spare time wasn't as abundant as hoped (Some unexpected homeschooling for two kids ate up a lot of it), and the field of bones threatened a few times, I'm pretty proud that I got it all finished.

With this project I wanted to move away from my usual style of clean and bright simplicity, and evoke some of the strangeness and grit that I've so admired in the pages of Heroes for Wargames, and I do feel I've captured some of that feel if not the quality, obviously!

The other armies have been incredible: both intimidating and inspiring in equal measure.

I'm already full of ideas for next year. and this time I'm going to go for an army for a decent model count!

Thanks to Iannick for all the organisation.

Mike's Mighty Dwarven Throng of Karak Blargh Conclusion

Hooray the challenge has ended with much completed dwarfiness! I am quite happy with the results of this years challenge since for the first time I have painted more points wise than I had planned. I started with my choices based on a 1750pt army list and what models I had available.

Dwarf General with 2 handed weapon (runes of striking and fury), heavy armor (master rune of adamant and rune of stone) 258pts

Battle Standard with hand weapon, heavy armor and shield. Banner with rune of battle 127pts

Champion with hammer (master rune of flight and rune of might, heavy armor and shield (runes of iron and stone) 309pts

10 long beards with standard and musician 180pts

16 warriors standard and musician 208pts

10 crossbows with standard and musician, light armor and shield 180pts

8 miners with standard and musician 130pts

1 flame cannon (rune of disguise) 144pts

4 allied imperial ogres with light armor and 2 handed weapons 176pts

In addition since I was being so incredibly productive I also managed to add to my list

Dwarf Baggage Train

Runelord and Anvil of Doom

Additional Heroes and a Giantish Ogre

With all this I'd love to say I'm done with having unpainted dwarves, but of course since January I have purchased enough marauder dwarves to make sure I have every unit that I could easily do another challenge. I have even gotten in several games with this list and I have learned the keys to victory is to burninate with the flame cannon everything a ogre and lord can't crush. Here is the completed army less the ogres which I forgot about when I took the picture.

 All hail the OWAC champions!
