It came from the Sump! (Skål's Wild Card)

This month was a short painting month for me as we are heading out on holiday for a few weeks. So with work being busy and my painting time cut down a bit I decided to use my Wild Card for a beast that will roam the Underhive. So with out further ado I present the Ambull the thing that came from the Sump.

The rules were published in White Dwarf 201 and they used a Chaos Spawn. I thought it was a bit more fitting to use a classic Ambull as it just fit the vibe I am going for.

The Thing from the Sump is a unique and extremely tough creature. Being largely made up of slime and gunk, it is completely immune to most normal weapons. The best you can hope for with a regular weapon is to drive it back slightly. The only way the gangs can think to destroy it is by submerging it in a particularly noxious toxichem pool. Fortunately for the gangs such pools are not uncommon amongst many parts of the Underhive. The only problem is how to push it in...

AdamH’s OWAC VI May Post – The Big Boys

Month five, my “leader” month.

I know what you are here for, where in the world was Adam this month? Well, the answer was San Francisco last week and then glorious Birmingham next week!

Therefore, this was always in my plan as my leader month, I needed a month where I didn’t really have to think about paint schemes, and had limited models to actually do.

First up we have the Halfling’s Treeman, I used the standard 4/5^th Edition treeman because I wasn’t a big fan of the Bloodbowl model of the time. I’m not sure how well it matches with the rest of the team but I always liked the model and wanted to have a reason to paint one.

Next is the Minotaur for the Chaos team. Again I used a 4/5^th Edition model rather than the official Bloodbowl one for the same reason, not a massive fan of the original. That said with this one I did do a little conversion, I lopped off his axe and added knuckledusters to both hands. Simple but keeps it on brand for Bloodbowl I think:

Bull Centaurs! Official models this time and painted to match the rest of the Chaos Dwarf scheme. Nothing much to say about these chaps other than I enjoyed painting them.

Finally, we have a Rat Ogre for my as of yet unpainted Skaven team. He is painted in the same scheme as my Skaven army because I see the team being my warlord’s official team.

So there we have it, this post officially marks my completion of the minimum required months in this OWAC! I am not going to lie, this one has been the hardest challenge for me yet, but I am happy with what I managed to get done. I am not stopping there though, there is still one month left, technically my wildcard month but I think I will be using it to finally paint my ratty boys, so look out for those next!

Paul adds a few more lesser demons to his horde for May

April was an extremely productive month for me so I left the basing and varnishing of my endeavors until May so that I could focus my efforts on my leader without too much stain upon either my time and wallet. I've now added a touch of colour and texture to the bases to the last of my troops.

Byron's Command of Zargon's horde - Leader Month (614 Points)

 Heed well the words of Mentor, Guardian of Loretome, and I will tell you of times past, of darker days when the Empire was saved against all hope. For I fear the darkness is about to return....

The fell legions of Zargon, Lord of Chaos, had swept all before them. At the sight of the black banner and massed hordes of Chaos, even the bravest warriors of the Empire had turned tail and fled, the land was laid waste and all men despaired. 

This month I present the Black Banner of Zargon! (and other command models)

The Champion and Standard Bearer on the left are 5th ed warhammer Chaos warriors. The warrior on the right is Slambo, the prototypical chaos warrior (traded to me by Quinton in exchange for sculpting services).

For the other command models, I based their standards on the Icons found in the HeroQuest Quest Book.

"WE SERVE ZARGON!"

The Standard Bearer is a skeleton from the game Dark World, a 90's HeroQuest knock off. I drilled a hole in his hand to give him a banner pole. I sculpted the skull at the top of the banner pole to match the evil shields on the dice.

"Zargon! Zargon! Zargon!" They Chitter and squeak

The musician is from Ruglud's armored orcs. I chose him because his armor matched the chaos warriors. The Standard is an 80's GW orc who closely matched the heroquest sculpts (at least his face does). And, the Champion is a catapult crew from the 90's. 

And, finally, I present 2 Chaos Sorcerers or Warlocks. (or Balor, the Witch King, or Sir Ragnar depending on the needs of the quest). I included images that I used for their inspiration below. The left one comes from the HeroQuest sticker album. And, the Right one comes from the HeroQuest DM screen - he's hard to see, but he's on the left flap sorta crouching under the umbra of Zargon's cape.

This month I was unable to start painting Zargon himself due to a supply chain issue around printing minis for his tiny HeroQuest game. That being said I completed the following minis:

Tom's Sisters of Battle: Month Five - Troopers

Well, MAY. A month of finishing off the Sisters sculpts and roundly ignoring any Militia models... 

I did, as penance though, paint this biker which I am really very pleased with! Especially the rams head on the shoulder pad. I'd love to paint up the two others that I have, but this one was a chore, so we'll see what the final month (a Wildcard - where anything goes) can rustle up....

I think maybe I should dirty down those yellow exhausts a bit more, and I could maybe paint a fleur de lis on the real mudguard... But these things are more likely for the next model :)

I have tried to upgrade my photographing game, by borrowing some Big Lights, and then playing around with some free Android apps - namely BackgroundEraser which has enabled an automatic cut out of the model from the background which I can then place on a stock white background and hence eliminate shadows and have all the pictures with a standard background. 

I ummed and ahhed over the cost of these next two models, but in the end I bit the bullet and brought them (thanks to some overtime at work). I've erased the cost, due to shame, but in the interest of disclosure they worked out to be £50 for the pair... I was so enthused to get started on them that I neglected to take a proper timestamp for them, so I hope these ebay screenshots will suffice....

I think I wanted the blue hair to be reminiscent of woad dye. I was also toying with the idea of some holy warpaint, but the motivations for this unit are super low so it was a case of keeping it simple. There's a LOT of duplicate sculpts, but that is to be embraced! Hopefully I can paint a few more in June...

In it you can see all the terrain I was painting last month, almost all specifically for these pics, although I didn't really have an idea of how I wanted them to be set up. 

I kinda wish I'd painted another set of stairs so I could join the two and have gangways between them, and so a larger display area. Maybe for the army shot in July eh?

This puts my Sisters force at a comfortable 1302 points, so the last month of the Challenge is a no pressure month. I have been slowly painting militia taken from the hive world of Necromunda to assist the Sisters (as part of another challenge), but I will show these next month along with an insidious threat which you can peek at below :)

I'm aiming to paint the rest of the flagellants and hopefully another bike, but I may get carried away with the xenos 😬. Either way, it's definitely non committal 😂 , but there will be Things to See!
