Quin’s Lizardmen of the Black Marsh - Slaves and Lizards (555 Points)

“Oggh” a voice calls out into the night. “Oggh Oooh,” a separate voice called back. The two primitives cautiously approach each other, until they recognize one another. A group of cavemen are feasting on berries and other nutrient filled plants when a third voice calls out “Ooooogh AoooGG,” the Neanderthals pick up their makeshift spears and crude clubs to defend themselves when out from the bushes jump an ambush of wild cats. Luck was on the side of the cavemen as they outnumbered the cats and defeated them with minimal loss. Cleaning their wounds from battle, a patrol of lizardmen quickly arrive to the situation, where they force a few cro-magnon to carry the freshly killed giant cats back to the den of the insidious Umbraxakar, where the cave-slaves were never heard from again.

Meet the Flintstones

I present my third rank and file month - the human slaves! Leading the savage Neanderthals to battle is a duty of Umbraxakar’s priestess, a spiritual godhead keeping watch over the slaves while inspiring them with her fantastical magic and charm. She will be counted as a level 5 human wizard accompanied by the Bonesnapper, a cold one warhound gifted to her by the shadow lord.

This month I’ve also included a unit of lizardmen equipped with hand weapons and shields, led by the voracious Farang Gix equipped with a double handed weapon. With the extra time from last month I was also able to convert some additional lizards into standard bearers and musicians to compliment my two units. Sitting through my bitz box I found some fitting tomb kings pieces, alas my sculpting skills are not up to snuff and as I attached these to be sculpted over to match the scales on the rest of the lizards. In the end I decided to just paint them with skeletal arms! I assume they found some sort of cursed aztec gold and spent it unwisely, ultimately leading them to this fate.

Sam's 2nd Ed. Catachans - Hobbits with sniper rifles, hmmm (191pts)

So erm, moving house is hard. Like "holy fuck why are there so many things to do" hard. So last month was a wild card-ulligan level write off and this month was a three day furious painting struggle bus. But, I made it, which is what's important.

So, this time I added a basic command squad with one of my favorite sculpts the bald cigar smoking lieutenant and a additional attachment unit of Ratlings, also a bunch of absolutely stellar sculpts.

The List (Rank & File III):

Command Squad - 95pts

  • Bolter, Mortar team, Meltagun, Plasmagun
Ratling Squad - 96pts
  • 6 ratlings

The Pics:

Cigar and some Gucci sunnies, Legend!

Yup, hobbits with snipers!

For some reason I imagined the the ratlings as being a bit dapper in their own kind of way, so gave them pristine white trousers, collars and cuffs. Undoubtedly not very useful when you are trying to be sneakily camouflaged as a sniper, but neither are bright red guns so what they hey. Also, obligatory tufts and bushes to be added later in the challenge.

Anyhow, next month should be my leader month. Leaving the last month for some vehicles and probably another squad.

Haven't really had much chance to check everyone's entries out recently, so I should be in for a treat with my planned catch-up.

Peace out
Samuel

JohnR's Estalians - Count the Hooves and Divide by Four. (414 points.)

Rank and File Month 4

My late uncle's go-to joke when we had to count sheep or cattle in a field.

Feel like I made good progress this month.

Estalian Caballeros led by Rocco 'The Tilean Stallion' Sindaco.

Among an army of swaggards and braggards Los Caballeros are the most boastful and rambunctious of the lot. Rumour has it that Rocco shares a certain characteristic in common with his horse. His comrades joke that he's a mutant; but the luckiest mutant alive!

Border Horse - 'Los Escorpiones' led by Estofado De Carne.

Invariably found in the vanguard of the army the life of a cavalry scout can be brutally short. On the upside, with a little luck, you can be the first amongst the enemy's baggage train and first in the queue at the whore house at the next town.

Rocco Sindaco: Level 10 Human Hero, light armour, shield, lance and warhorse: 66 points.
9 Estalian Caballeros (+1 Shock Elite): light armour, shields and lances, standard: 200 points.

Estofado De Carne: Level 5 Human Hero, light armour, shield, spear and warhorse: 40 points.
5 Border Horse: light armour, shields and spears, standard: 108 points.

It's starting to look like an army :)

The plan is to do characters next. Though I'll probably wind up painting more rank and file 😂

"And It Was All Yellow..." – Jon's Bad Moons (236 points)

Leader Month!

Warboss with 'eavy armour, power fist and plasma pistol: 86
5 Nobz with 'eavy armour and power axes, 2 plasma guns: 150 points

Running Total: 850 points of 1000

A generally slumpy month this month, busy at work and no desire to blog. I didn't even reply to any comments on my last post yet, appalling form on my part. I could make excuses but the truth is I've just had the Big Sads for a few weeks and it's been difficult to stir my stumps and find the gumption for anything more taxing than Crusader Kings 2 and solitary drinking. These figures have been in the queue for ten days just waiting for their base rims and some camera work!

That said: I've finally nailed the colour balance, the more modern inks I've cycled in are doing the work, and the Warboss in particular was a delight to work on.

Look at 'im. What a lad! Not my absolute favourite Bad Moon Warboss ever (the one-piece job with the round Marine-style shoulderpads and proper kustom weapon takes that crown) but a solid figure, chunky and compact. The beakie helmet under the boot is a nice touch.

I'm not saying I'm going to throw out all my plastic models ever and start frothing about the merits of lead vs tin in pewter, but let's say I finally understand where the "all metal all the time" types are coming from, and I'm looking forward to painting a collection where the only plastic involved is in the slottabases.

I was pretty restrained with the kit on the Warboss. I don't think it's in keeping with the spirit of the OWAC to count extra points for Spike Arms or Master-crafted Plasma Pistols or squint and pretend he's in mega-armour even if those are the sort of upgrades I'd consider taking in an actual battle. The only upgrade card I'm going to be counting for the challenge is the heavy flamer on the Land Raider and that's because it's already been stuck on by a previous owner.

White hair and blue jeans on the Nobz Mob. As the oldest and wealthiest of the tribe, the boomer Orks if you will, that just made sense. They have a certain "Tony Blair's lockdown mullet" energy to them.

In accordance with tradition there's a mix of weapons on these, some ranged and some melee. I always liked the power axe in second edition, with its lightweight one handed profile for swinging at boyz and heftier double handed chop for smashing up toyz, so they've all got one of those. A couple of plasma guns so they can do something if they have to take cover for a turn, and... I've just spotted a plasma gun that's fallen off. Minge biscuits. I shall replace that during next month's sprint on the Goff mob, I swear. I've knocked the points for it off this month but I'm still going strong, and that's all the Bad Moons themselves done. Home stretch is nice familiar stuff: big tanks and black armour. I'll be there in no time.
