AdamH’s Skaven final month! - Rank and file month

Here we are at the end of another OWAC, or at least the painting part of it. This month was my Jezzails, as well as more Globadiers and a few random Stormvermin that I needed to finish in order to complete a unit.

I also decided that the base on my Doomwheel from a previous challenge was simply too large to be practical for gaming so I removed it from that base, put it on a new one and reclaimed some of the giant rats from the old base to make a small unit. I also repainted the driver in my new black and red Skyre scheme:

I’m not going to claim any points for painting these as all I really did was the bases but it took up hobby time so I thought I would at least include it as part of this month’s work.

Month six stats:

Models painted: 32

Total points: 746.5

Chance of the Jezzails hitting anything in-game: 0

I also had the opportunity to bring the army (and some bits from previous challenges) to Japan and play a couple of games of Warhammer Renaissance, it really is a pleasure to see painted models facing off against each other on the battlefield:

So that’s it for painting in this year’s OWAC. I have a few finishing touches, mainly varnishing and then adding grass and tufts to the bases which I will do over the next few weeks ready for the wrap-up post in July. I can’t wait to see the army all together and then with all the rest of my Skaven, I haven’t put it together myself yet so it should be interesting seeing what it looks like.

Until the wrap-up post though I hope you have enjoyed following my rats come together over the last six month, I always enjoy painting them and I probably have enough to do one more challenge but not next year. I already have something planned for that but I will save talking about it until the wrap-up post.

AdamH’s OWAC VI June Post – The Grey Mountain Vermin

Month six, my “WildCard” month.

Boom! Challenge complete!

I have saved the best (figures at least) for last, I don’t think anyone really expected me to do Blood Bowl without Skaven, well here they are. I picked up at least one model of each sculpt, as well as enough models to fill every potential spot in the team:

These were painted in the same scheme as my Skaven army featured in previous OWACs, so feel free to check back if you haven’t seen that already. 😊

First up here are the Linerats, nothing too special here.

Gutterrunners, I like that the darker blues on these guys break up the brown over the whole team.

The only rats that are smart enough to take care of their armour.

He has a ball!

Various mutants, I think I like the crab claw guy the best myself, although the leggie boi is pretty funny.

Finally, we have Hakflem Skuttlespike, the Skaven Star Player.

Overall there are a few bits I will probably go back over with these lot as I ran out of time to finish them quite to the standard I would have liked but I am happy to have them to a playable state at least.

Well, that concludes the challenge for me this year, I will save my final thoughts for the wrap-up post but I am looking forward to seeing everyone’s final posts over the coming weeks.

AdamH’s Skaven - Elite excellently equipped experts (240.5 Points)

April Rank and File

This month introduces a new unit for the challenge, although one I started during my last Skaven challenge, therefore this is more of an expansion to that unit. The mighty Stormvermin!

For the standard I used the Limited Edition (oooo fancy) BSB from the Skaven Army box, I figure he is sort of normal enough looking that he can either be used as an alternative standard bearer for the Stormvermin unit or as the BSB if needed:

I also managed to get the four missing Packmasters from last month finished so that officially completes the unit of Giant Rats:

So here is my submission for this month altogether:

My submission for April is as follows:

AdamH’s OWAC V Intro Post – It’s time to get furry!

Is that deja vu I hear you say? No? Well I’m going to tell you anyway. Yes this is my second time doing Skaven for an OWAC. Anyone who remembers my first Skaven challenge army will remember that it was rather plain, mostly Clanrats, Slaves and Stormvermin. It made for a good core to my army but it is time I started looking into the various clans, so this time around I will be focusing mostly on…

Clan Moulder!

Obviously, I still need to add more core units to the force because as it grows in points I need more fodder (Slaves) and more weapon team production (Clan Rats), plus I want to bump the number of Stormvermin available to me just in case I want to put the bell in with them.

Oh, yea I’m also adding a Screaming Bell :)

But the main addition here is a large unit of Giant Rats, with the original 3rd edition chaos hounds mixed in for fun and a decent sized unit of Rat Ogres. Honestly, I would have liked to include a few more but they are shockingly hard to pick up for a reasonable price nowadays.

For this year’s challenge I am targeting the following list:

Here are a few other pictures of the solid mass of metal that is currently stressing the weight limit of my shelf:

Next we have this year’s overlord offering. For those of you not part of the challenge there is normally a “squad challenge” during the down time between OWACs where challengers paint a small unit of something just for fun. This year I decided to get back into the swing of things by painting up some more ratties, specifically Censor Bearers:

At the same time I decided to paint an extra one for our gracious overlord, hopefully they please and serve him well:

Finally, those of you that followed my original Skaven entry back in OWAC III may remember me saying that I wasn’t able to finish the bases due to not being able to varnish them at the time. Well I decided to go back and varnish and finish the bases so I want to take this opportunity to show you an example of one of the stars of my previous challenge with the updated base, which will also give you a taste of what’s to come this year from me:

So there we go, many ratties coming from me this coming year. Numbers wise this is going to be my biggest challenge so far, however as so many of them are simple sculpts I am hopeful of my chances.

Thanks for stopping by and please make sure you check out the rest of the challengers this year, I’m sure we are going to have another belter!

AdamH’s wheely big final month – (414 Points)

“The terrible deafening thunder that you hear is not of nature no-no, as promised let me introduce you to the crazy warpsnitck and his mobile lightning shooting chariot!

Very impressive yes-yes? It costs many warp tokens but the mess it makes of the stuntys is well worth it.

I guess you are thinking this is the last you will see of my chittering horde, well maybe, but then again maybe not. There are still plenty more of us hiding in the shadows.”

Anyway, sorry for the title pun, hopefully you can just roll with me on this one.

Technically I officially finished the challenge last month since I completed five months and passed the 1,000 point barrier however I seriously have loads more Skaven to paint so decided to push myself as much as possible this last month and finish a couple of units that either weren’t at the minimum viable number or I just wanted to bulk up.

First up we have another group of Stormvermin, same colour scheme as before of course:

Next I turned my attention to my Clanrat unit, specifically I had a couple of the original Rat Ogre figures which I really like but always thought they were a little small for their stat line. They are only just a little bigger than a standard clanrat. So I painted them in such a way that they could fit in with the clanrat unit, taking the place of four standard rats but were still mounted on 40mm bases should I want to run them as Rat Ogres.

I also painted a bunch more actual Clan Rats to bulk out the unit:

Finally we have the real star of the month and maybe this army so far, I’m going to let the pictures do the talking and talk after:

A few things that might be hard to spot in the pictures, the globes on the wheel spokes all have some fancy crystal effect that I painted, was really happy with, and then mounted backwards so it is close to the wheel and you can’t actually see! I painted a nice looking OSL on the inside of the wheel coming from the generator, that is almost entirely covered up by the wheels again! Finally I painted all of the insides of the wheels, and the rats running them and guess what, you can’t see any of it! Hurrah for wasted effort…

Anyway, to summarise, this month’s entry is:

Stormvermin x12, Halberds, Shields [150]

Clanrats x19 (kind of) [114]

DOOMWHEEL!!!! [150]

Total – 414 points

Minus the wrap-up post this is the end of my rat horde for this challenge. Even though this is my second OWAC Skaven have always been my favourite army and I feel more pride in completing this one than any army I have ever tackled. This is the first time since I was probably 12 or so (which was a long time ago FYI) that I have had a full painted Skaven army and I can’t wait to see them all together. I have deliberately not got everything out together yet because I wanted to wait until everything was completed. So when I write my wrap-up post and take those pictures will be the first time for me to see the completed army as well! I am genuinely excited 😊

AdamH’s fine upstanding rat-warriors – [213.5 Points]

“How are you liking your new home-box? Are your cells mates keeping you up at night? Oh that smelly green one? I don’t know his name, he doesn’t speak-speak much, I only know that he used to lead some smelly group of brutish Orcs, called the winter tribe or something, I think…

It doesn’t really matter though, just like them your furless race is soon to be gone bye-bye.”

A few more Gutter Runners make an appearance this month, they are the unit I am using to bulk out the points and I think you will see why I needed to do that at the end of the post.

So next up we have a new unit! The only unit in the army to feature non-rusted armour in fact. My force’s leader’s own bodyguards, the Stormvermin!

So, there is quite a lot different on these guys than the rest of the army. As I said above they have non-rusted armour and weapons which is mostly unique in my army (the Gutter Runners don’t really have armour but their weapons are clean). On top they have white (but a dirty-white) cloth. Finally their skin and fur are black/grey. Altogether I was going for a distinct but still unified look that doesn’t look out of place among the other units. I would be keen to hear if you think I succeeded?

Finally, we have the unit that I have been dreading the most, Skaven Slaves… why might you ask? Well mainly because the ten models you see below weigh in at a mighty 27.5 points! Considering that they are a useful re-directer unit and a very flavourful one for Skaven, you normally want at least a few units of them in an army. However the thought of painting 40+ models for less than 100 points wasn’t one I was looking forward to. Therefore, I am targeting a more reasonable single unit of 25 over the challenge and have started with the ten you see below:

To summarise, this month’s entry is:

Stormvermin x10, Halberds, Shields (Inc. Standard and Musician) [144]

Skvenslaves x10 (Inc. Musician) [27.5]

Gutter Runners x3, Additional Hand Weapons, Throwing Stars [42]

Total – 213.5 points

I’m pretty happy with managing to paint 23 models in a month, certainly a record for me. I think I will take a bit of a break next month and paint some high point models and maybe a few slaves. Hope everyone in the challenge and watching along at home is staying safe and healthy.

All hail the horned rat!
