James WRR’s Wrap Up: An Army Worthy of Slaanesh

The number of Slaanesh is six, and sixfold his blessings. An army in his name has been raised in six months, and it will stand for six-thousand!

The Emperor’s Children stride, strut and slither to war eternal!

That’s it! OWAC VII officially in the bag.

I’d like to thank my friends back in Australia for initiating me into the world of Warhammer all those years ago, my comrades in the challenge for their support and gifts, eBay sellers for putting models up on the site, and my long-suffering partner for putting up with me for these past six months. We did it!

Mighty, Dark-Winged, Avenging Lord of Chaos, James Rudd, with his Mighty Avenging Chaos Army.

Taking part in this challenge has been so much so fun. From list-building to lore-crafting and eBay-scouring to model-painting, these past six months have reignited my love for this hobby. It’s gotten me inspired for all manner of kooky future projects. And it’s made me insufferable to my local gaming group who, for some reason, INSIST on playing games written within the past decade. Tut, tut.

Oscar speeches aside, I’m truly so happy to have completed my first ever OWAC. It’s been a challenge at times, a real hit to my wallet and slightly maddening (why did I decide each element of my models needed six layers of edge highlighting?), but I wouldn’t change it for the world.

I’ve ended up with, I like to think, a fantastic and unique army of charming miniatures. But I’ve also ended up in a cool group of like-minded Oldhammer fanatics who’ve provided no end of support and inspiration.

I’d particularly like to shout out Tom, Graeme, and Jaakko, who’ve been nothing but generous, with both models, info and encouragement. And also to John R for the awesome Space Dwarf adventurer.

I had originally prepared a short list of my absolute favourite projects from this year's OWAC, but there have been so many amazing armies created over these months it just stopped making sense as a highlights list. Instead, I implore you to take one of your free evenings and scroll back through all of this year's posts. It'll be time well spent, I promise you that!

The very last addition to my own OWAC project is a simple display board, made from a cheap box frame, a few layers of foam board, and plenty of sand and flock.

I’ve tried to balance the classic early-90’s “Planet Golf Course” aesthetic with more modern sensibilities. People on Instagram and Reddit always love the alien cacti I use to frame my model shots, so I made sure to add some here as well.

I hope you’ll agree that this board frames the whole army nicely, even if there’s not all that much real-estate to spare for each model. It had to fit in pride of place at the top of my Ikea Kallax shelves!

Better yet, the board itself is also ideal for games of Ritual28, once I move my hoard of freaky space dudes off of it.

Well, that’s that! Thanks all again for following along with this wild ride. I’m still trying to feel out whether or not I take part in next year’s challenge. I do have a whole Tzeentchian army for Warhammer Fantasy Third Edition in boxes now… we’ll just have to wait and see, I suppose.

In any case, chuck me a follow on Instagram (@illuminator_hobby) and hopefully I can catch some of you at events in the future.

Take it sleazy, OWAC. It’s been real!

James WRR’s Wildcard: Raise the Banner!

No army is complete without a standard to raise high above the maelstrom of battle.

And so, for my final month of miniature painting for OWAC VII, I made sure to paint up a degenerate iconward of the Dark Prince.

Behold! The bearer of the Rapturous Standard!

Now, hang on a tick, this fellow looks a bit different to his comrades in my Emperor’s Children army. That is, of course, because he’s a Second Edition Chaos Marine.

That’s right, this guy is from the far future of 1996!

It was always my plan to expand my Rogue Trader Emperor’s Children into a Second Edition army – and maybe even beyond – once I’d finish my core force. And this angry fellow is just the beginning of that.

Already in the pipeline for the coming months is a contingent of stinking, relentless Plague Marines, with accompanying Champions (these Champs graciously donated by Tom) and a foul Beast (sent over by Graeme).

These fellow will be painted in the same rippling, blue-black armour as my Emperor’s Children, but with fecund greens replacing garish pinks.

The goal is to, ultimately, end up with a proper Chaos force incorporating servants of each Chaos God. And who better to bring them together than the Big Bad Guy himself: Abaddon the Despoiler.

Obviously I’m yet to put a lick of paint on these models. But I promise you, if you stick with me, they’ll be painted up sometime in the coming months.

That is, if I don’t get distracted by my four potential Warhammer Fantasy Battle armies. Look, I’m embracing Chaos in many aspects of my hobby life at the moment, can you blame me?

And so, that’s the last proper model of my OWAC army finished! I really hope you’ve enjoyed following along.

But I’m STILL not done just yet. I’ve already bought a few bits and pieces to create an appropriate display board for the force. And a wrap-up post to share. Watch this space…

Until then, praise Slaanesh, and be excellent to one another.

James WRR’s Rank & File 4: Veterans of the Long War

With my fourth and final Rank & File month complete, the OWAC finish line is in sight!

My dark, avenging Emperor’s Children army has now been fully realised for games of Rogue Trader. My loyalband of bastards is ready to burn the galaxy and party on the ashes.

I’ve saved the best till last, and all.

This month, I’ve painted up the heaviest hitters of the army — the elites of the elite, the most dastardly of the dastardly, the slimiest of the slimeballs. Ooh, and a true titan of the battlefield as well.

Not originally planned for this challenge, I did recently get my hands on one of my “holy grail” miniatures: the Rogue Trader Keeper of Secrets.

This glorious bull-headed beast really completes the Daemonic side of my army, and stands as a lovely centrepiece, alongside the Rhino and Dreadnought.

Speaking of these mechanical monstrosities, I painted up a Techmarine to accompany them, complete with Servo-Arm (stolen from a second-edition Space Marine and mutated accordingly).

The eagle-eyed among you will notice that this model and the Medic, who also joins the army this month, are those illustrated in the Realm of Chaos: Slaves to Darkness army list. While these sculpts could easily be generic Renegades, I thought they should fulfil their destined role and be painted accordingly. Medics should wear white, of course, even if they are malicious butcher-surgeons from the beyond the stars.

Finishing off this cohort of characters is the dread Lord of Slaanesh Ashmodeus Harkonnen. Based on the absolutely beautiful Jes Goodwin sculpt, and gifted a pair of Heroquest Gargoyle wings, Harkonnen was previously painted as the leader of my original Realm of Chaos warband. I like to think he’s had a real glow-up since his first paintjob a decade ago, with a suitably dark and awesome new colour scheme that befits the leader of my new army.

Of course, we can’t forget the squad of Old War veterans: the Traitor Terminators.

Not originally featured in Slaves to Darkness, Traitor Terminators were later introduced in White Dwarf and The Lost and the Damned (with a bit of equipment and cost disparity between these publications). I received these models with a mix of Imperial bodies and weapons, so had to do a bit of Green Stuffing to turn them traitorous. Sculpting’s not my greatest skill, but I hope these still look the part in the army!

I absolutely love these chunky boys. As solid hunks of metal, their mere weight in the hand makes them feel badass, tough and unstoppable. They may not be as dynamic as the latest plastics, or even the second-edition Chaos Terminators, but their stoic poses do give them an air of “Don’t even try reasoning with us. Say your prayers, bucko."

There's not all that much to write about the painting process this month, just that I’ve taken time to translate the colour placement of the basic Tactical Marines to the Terminators and characters — and that I’m so, so over all this edge highlighting and trim!

The Keeper of Secrets was an interesting challenge. I knew I wanted to maintain the same vibrancy as the Daemonettes that it leads, but also that I wanted it to look much more mean and brutish. After all, Keepers are Slaanesh’s brute force option for when subterfuge and temptation has failed.

I remember reading, in an old White Dwarf somewhere, that larger models should be painted darker than smaller ones (I think the examples given were Lizardmen Kroxigors and Skinks). I suppose that brighter colours on the big ‘uns would make them stand out far too much when groups of models are standing together.

As such, I chose an overall darker, cooler base colour for the Greater Daemon’s skin, painting some brighter patterns and metallics here and there to bring back the funkiness. Daemons of Slaanesh should be the gaudiest of the gaudy, after all, no matter how mean and tough they are.

And, so, that about wraps it up! Apart from my wildcard month surprise still to come...

I’m super pleased to see these guys all together now, painted to the highest of standards that the timing of the challenge would allow.

But, if you’ve been enjoying watching this army grow, don’t worry. I’ve got big plans in the works for the future of my Realm of Chaos collection. And maybe even future challenge attempts…

I ain’t done yet. If you've been inspired at all, join my own personal Chaos cult by chucking me a follow on Instagram at @illuminator_hobby. I'd love to start organising some games and meet-ups in the future!

James WRR's Rank & File Month 3: The Saga of Sirfell

Hello again, devotees of Slaanesh.

For my third Rank & File month, I dove in and painted, arguably, the most interesting squad in my growing Emperor's Children army.

Well, I tell a lie. It's not really a squad at all. Instead, it's the motley warband of my Champion: Sirfell Thrice-Blessed.

The model for Sirfell, who I'll introduce you to shortly, has been with me through two previous armies and at least three unique paint schemes. He's a real venerable figure in my hobby journey, and so deserves a proper saga.

Indulge me as I bring you the tale of Sirfell Thrice-Blessed — his origins and his battles — in the style of Realm of Chaos: Lost and the Damned's example champions.

Of course, none of the followers in this warband were actually randomly generated (sadly we no longer live in the era of mail-order bitz), but some of the rewards for the followers and Sirfell himself were. You know, for fun!

In any case, I'm pretty pleased with how Chaotic this warband ended up. Nice and varied. Enjoy the saga of this sadistic weirdo...

The Saga of Sirfell Thrice-Blessed, Champion of Slaanesh

Through the inky black my vessel flew,

The stars, distant. My only warmth the radiance of plasma engines.

Ensign, was I, bearer of colours, among blackness, steel and brass.

The great warship bored me into despair.

Until the Winds buffeted our sails and our keel flooded with roiling star-stuff.

THE BEGINNING: Sigmund Goyer was once an ensign of the Imperial Navy, travelling the stars alongside Rogue Traders and warlords. He had lived his short, dull life onboard one capital ship, The Song of Saturn, rarely seeing conflict. After all, the sudden appearance of The Song in a sector was usually enough to still dissent. He craved excitement, life, colour… until the ship’s Gellar Field dipped, only for the briefest of seconds, during a routine Warp jump.

Swift were the Angels of Darkness, so beautiful their twisted forms.

The Song was boarded and captured before a defence could be mounted.

Creatures, lithe and vivid, skittered through the plasteel bulkheads as if they were silk.

I saw now my escape, the power of the World of Winds.

I debased myself in front of the Angels. And was marked in return.

THE TAKING OF THE SONG: The Song of Saturn was boarded and seized by renegade Space Marines of the Emperor’s Children legion. All human resistance was quickly put down by sword, bolter and daemonic claw. Only six score of those who prostrated themselves in front of the invaders were spared, and those spared would find little comfort. Sigmund, taken by the displays of bloodshed, offered his devotion to whichever power had delivered him unto these Angels. And so, he became Sirfell — the galaxy’s newest, lowliest Champion of Slaanesh.

MARK OF SLAANESH: +1/+10 Willpower

FIRST GIFT: Musk

FIRST ATTRIBUTE: Vampiric

INITIAL FOLLOWERS: None

How naive was I to assume the Children of the Emperor would be kind.

In their service I distinguished myself, inflicting all manner of pains upon my shipmates.

I drank their blood, discovered it rich, and felt myself grow strong and limber.

Alongside one of the forsaken Angels, and a pack of loyal beasts, we hunted through the decks for sport.

THE SCOURING: Sirfell discovered great joy in acts of cruelty, seeing colours in spilled viscera that he had never seen before. A twisted renegade by the name of Gorelove — an outcast even among his own outcast kin — took a keen interest in Sirfell’s hunt.

SECOND GIFT: Characteristic Gain: +1/+10 Will Power

NEW FOLLOWERS: Chaos Renegade (Space Marine) with Prehensile Tail and Beweaponed Extremities, 2 War Hounds

FIRST FOLLOWER REWARD: Vividly coloured skin for the War Hounds

I ran with the beasts, hound and man, gorging myself on thrill.

After days of chase and slaughter, I fell deathly ill.

My skull felt like it was splitting asunder.

After a fitful slumber in the Angel’s velvet sheets, I awoke to discover myself changed.

I fashioned a hood to hide my honoured form.

THE CHANGE: Having let too much blood spill out in careless patterns, Sirfell found that his new god was as vengeful as it was kind. He awoke to discover that his head had grown long and distended, his once pleasant features stretched like rubber over his elongated skull.

SECOND ATTRIBUTE: Overgrown Body Part

NEW FOLLOWERS: None

SECOND FOLLOWER REWARD: Poisonous Bite for the Hounds

The ship moved on, with a new name and new God.

We were carried through the void by the Dark Prince, and landed upon a feral world.

Feathered they were, these people. Arrogant and violent. Good sport.

Their shaman eventually saw sense, and pledged herself to my service.

Slaanesh blessed me with a new voice to replace my distorted one.

THE BREAKING OF THE FEATHERED ONES: The newly renamed vessel, Storm Siren, was transported to the orbit of a forgotten world. In vast, equatorial jungles lived a primitive human civilisation, magic-obsessed and matriarchal. With little technology, they proved easy prey for the Emperor’s Children, and for Sirfell’s budding warband. A shamanic leader, in exchange for the safety of her tribe, offered her gifts to Sirfell. The Champion received a cursed haemonculus from the shaman, which began to speak for him in hisses and whispers.

THIRD ATTRIBUTE: Manikin

NEW FOLLOWERS: Psyker

THIRD FOLLOWER REWARD: Bestial Face (Insect) for the Psyker

With the Feathered Widow as a guide, I journeyed to lands of metal, stone and snow.

Before me, a castle, a test of strength and favour.

Calling forth daemons and eager blades,

I threw down the pretender.

THE SIEGE: The tribes of the jungle were not the only humans to live on the planet. Old, old magic had been at work there, bringing with it the taint of Chaos. North, along the bitter seas, Sirfell discovered crumbling castles and grand ruins, home to barbarous man and beast alike. Sirfell’s warband and a host of summoned daemons laid siege to the largest of these strongholds, drawing the support of opportunistic warlords and princelings. Two of these warriors eventually pledged themselves to the Champion, and the castle fell.

THIRD GIFT: Fiend of Slaanesh as a Hunting Beast

FOURTH ATTRIBUTE: Warty Skin

NEW FOLLOWERS: 2 Warriors of Chaos

FOURTH AND FIFTH FOLLOWER REWARD: Mane of Hair for the Psyker, Manic Fighter for one Chaos Warrior

So this is what I had been missing.

The taste of conquest. The adoration of the strong.

But a lord must be learned.

Something whispered from the heart of this world.

My Widow gave it a name “Tzaa’entsh, the Shaper”.

I studied the runes and took council.

Slaanesh protects me from malefic influence.

THE CALL: Having become the lord of the land by right of conquest, Sirfell relished in life’s luxuries. But something was not well in the world. Another Dark God held sway, and it was jealous. Sirfell withdrew into study, learning ways to combat the influence of Tzeentch.

FIFTH ATTRIBUTE: Magic Resistance

NEW FOLLOWERS: None

SIXTH FOLLOWER REWARD: Powerful Legs for Psyker

I grew bored of castle life and its primitive decadence.

I returned to the stars with the Angels of Darkness, commanding a new respect.

I was gifted a shard of Slaanesh himself, a living scourge with which to tear reality.

And put it to use against the Greenskin invaders.

BEAST FIGHTS BEAST: Sirfell and his warband returned to the Storm Siren. Having grown in power and esteem, he was gifted a Daemon-possessed weapon. Out of nowhere, the vessel was attacked and boarded by a roving band of Orks, drawn to the ship’s psychic spoor. The battle was intense, and much of the Storm Siren destroyed. But Sirfell emerged victorious. Having proven himself a fearless warrior in front of the Greenskins, a number of them begin to call him “Boss”.

FOURTH GIFT: Daemon Weapon in the shape of a flail

NEW FOLLOWERS: 9 Orks

SEVENTH FOLLOWER REWARD: Tentacles for an Ork

The Siren has been changed as I have, beautiful and violent.

But she has suffered greatly.

It is time to move on, to find new hosts for Slaanesh’s blessing.

Battle after battle, I fought as a Child of the Emperor, an Angel of Darkness but a man.

My bestial followers fell like leaves. But I found I cared not.

They offered their souls to Slaanesh as I.

But who else could possibly compare?

THE PATH TO GLORY: Sirfell grew to command great influence among the Emperor’s Children, joining them on battlefields across the galaxy. His Orkish followers proved too impetuous, however, and six were killed in skirmishes on the Forge World of Londres. Upon this world, a deal was struck with daemonic smiths: six souls for a suit of silk stronger than steel. Sirfell left garbed in the armour of Slaanesh, and a renewed vigour. The path stretched onwards — death or glory, both, were in sight.

FIFTH GIFT: Chaos Armour

NEW FOLLOWERS: None

EIGHTH FOLLOWER REWARD: One Ork becomes a Magician
