Ben's Cult of Slaanesh (197pts)

This time around I'm doing a Slaanesh themed 3rd edition army. This month's project is a unit of the classic Red Redemption models. In my opinion, these are the kind of figures that scream Oldhammer. The level of detail and character on these models is perfect. You got to love one piece figures with shields cast on them. No muss, no fuss.

I'm counting these guys as Chaos Thugs so I can mount them on 25mm squares. The bigger base gives then plenty of room so they can cleanly rank up together. I got lucky on ebay awhile ago and managed to score 20 or so of these guys with full command, including 5 of the champion figure with a double handed weapon.

Points wise, I'm counting the leader as a Marauder (35), with heavy armor (3), shield (1), and a double handed weapon (2). The 12 cultists are equipped in the same fashion (8+1+1+2=12 each, 144 total). I finished the musician (12 more points!!!), but in true OWAC fashion I didn't complete the standard bearer. I've started the banner twice, hated it both times and have decided to wait until I can devote some quality time to it. Adding all these little dudes up gives me 197 total points for January.

Command figures including the banner of shame.

A little ode to my brother. He did a similar thing with one of these guys back in the 80's.

Double handed weapons.

Rank and file mofos.

A totally dodgy shot of the whole unit. The purple smear on my green mat is from the last OWAC.

GW glazes were used over a light gray undercoat on the robes to try and create a pastel finish. The masks and shields were shaded with a little purple. Ideally I  would like to add some Slaanesh symbols to the shields at some point. The flesh tone is GW Rakarth shaded with a thinned red purple ink mix from Scale75's Inktensity set. The dark colored basing was decided on to help make the unit "pop" on the table.

I should also add that my incredibly thoughtful and loving girlfriend gave me a fancy camera for Christmas. This is the first opportunity I've had to use it. Clearly I've got a ways to go as a photographer...

I'm leaning towards painting my Minotaur unit next month but Slaanesh is a fickle master so who knows. As always thanks for looking.

  1. Really effective use of glazes. Recently discovered them and was thinking of doing a similar idea, good to know it works.

Personally think you should follow up adding the extra details but that in itself is a challenge to pull off.

    Great work :)

  2. Great work. I like the simple, yet very effective paint job.

I’ve also got about 20 of these minis waiting to be painted as chaos thugs.

  3. Ha, when I used to use the big camera, I had exactly the same problem. Stick to the good ol’ camera phone nowadays :)

  5. They turned out great dude. This sets a great ton for your army. We do need to do a battle of the 4 powers when OWAC is done.

  8. Cool model selection. I like where your thought process is going on these. Just play with the camera more, it's a good first effort. If you want more depth of field you need to narrow the aperture which means you need to compensate for light more some how. Either with, gasp, more light or a longer exposure time. Anyway, just take a lot of pictures and think about investing in leaning how to use photo processing software. I've salvaged some pretty horrible photos with Lightroom.
