Nicolas' Daemon Legion of Khorne - Month 4 - Hero (0pts)

 Blood Thirster incoming!

He has arrived, the big, the strong, the magnificient one! So far in my life, I have completed only one other Bloodthirster. Something I can't really square in my head since I always played chaos and Khorne was regularly a go to. I remember as a 11 years old kid going back and forth through the book of armies from 4th edition... obsessing about the Bloodthirster and his "all 10 stat line".  Always refering to it, comparing what it would be against an elf, a goblin, a treeman, etc on the dice throw.  (Young me was not yet an engineer and statistics were like voodoo 🤣) Building army lists of all sort with miniatures I did not have and could not afford anyway, and lining up dominos to get a sence of that flying over ranked units would do. Now enough nostalgia, back to grown up hobby!

Bloodthirster - 0 pts

At some point in the process of preparing for this month, I ended up with a real lead buffet. Both intimidating and very satisfying! I ended up going for that weird alien like head in the perspective matching the bloodletters, and it really works!

Also, going through my bit box, I figured it would be a great time to use that extra Harry the Hammer metal base. A bit of realingment, pining, extra chains and skulls... with the idea of only partialy obstructing the Bloodthirster view from behind. The result is quite dynamic for such a stiff sculpt... and very heavy! I love it!

...and just for the  kick of it, i found my first bloodthirster, painted with Testor enemal and stones built out of polistyren...  my methods have changed!

Ben’s Chaos Gnomes - Month 4

(Hey Kiddos, April has been an absolute gauntlet. No story time this go around, just brass tacks and pointy hobgoblins. Actually though, have y’all checked out the new Hobgoblin rule set from Mike Hutchinson? It’s great, just trust me.)

Something I learned last month; a hobgoblin bolt thrower only requires 2 crew members, so I began this month with four homeless spearmen. This inspired me to dig into my tacklebox of junk, and pull out all the hobgoblins I didn’t think I’d paint for this project.

Over the course of April, I managed to paint up 20 of the nerds; 10 more spearmen and 10 archers. I like how faux-motley they turned out with their alternating red and yellow outfits. Part of me hopes that with all the red bows and spears that this batch speaks to the red period, but if not I still think it’s fun to have so many primary colors in one place. Much of my miniatures background is in the INQ28 community, so it really is a breath of flesh air to paint with such bright and simple colors.

Anyway, these guys cost points, so why don’t I break them all down for you?

Hobgoblin Archers - 55 pts
Hobgoblin Warriors with boss, musician, and banner bearer - 119 pts

Total - 174 pts
Total Total - 2297 pts

While it’s only 7.5% of the army’s current points total, I’m glad I decided to give these guys a little life. They weren’t in the original army proposal, but they’re here now, and I think we’re better for it. They’re mean, they’re green, and they’ll stab-poke your spleen, (and be great screens for units that actually matter.)

And on that note, back to the paint table. See you in a month!

Sybou_Month 4_OWAC VIII_Wildcards_ Artillery and ... a mysterious fellow

Hello dear assemblée,

I'm glad to join you again on a new month for our favorite contest.

I took time to do my wildcard which was surprisingly hard to finish.

It's just a couple of cannons!

A great canon!

So The Baron purchased several artillery pieces for his army. It includes a mortar, 2 great cannons and 2 hellguns.

These one is operated by 3 former Bretonnian outcasts. As the cannon is kind of old, it is better to have a big shield to protect yourself when you light it on.

A hellgun

Sorry about this picture which is kind of blurry.
The crew tries really hard to make it work but misfires are to be expected.
The Baron's army doesn't include master engineer so the artillery pieces are not the more reliable.

Finally to finish the month, something wicked this way comes ...

“There are some who call me…Tim”

Tim the Enchanter is one amongst lots of wizards working for the Baron. But Tim is a man of talent that only has a relation of equal to equal with the Baron ...
The 2 old geezers don't really get along and have many contest of who's the more mysterious.

In order to finish Owac 8, I still have my big cavalry unit of dogs of war and my lord on steed.
So 11 riders before the end of Owac.

May --> Mercenary cavalry
June --> Leader month

That's it for my month of April. Thank you for reading me and keep your head into the game, we're getting closer to the end.

Cheers

Paul's Dark Elves - Rank and File month 4 - The Gorgon's Guard (440pts)

Vel'Rake cursed his master for a fool. These slaves should already be on their way to the sisters as offerings, not being force marched to exhaustion to prove some petty point to a jumped up traitor from Ulthuan. As if the Blood Dragon would be impressed by a handful of reptilian slaves from the stinking jungle marshes. Vel'Rake suspected that wasn't the point anyway. With the raiders already ashore between them and the island fortress of Daggerpoint, he suspected that the lizardmen were here more as a meat shield than to impress anybody.

His vexillary took the rise ahead of them and dipped the standard twice. The carnax blew two mournful notes of muster, and the warriors of the Gorgons Guard assembled on top of the hill with their cold blooded charges arranged in front of them like so much meat at the slave markets.

The sorceress cult priestess Zintalja caught his eye, clearly signalling her annoynace with the situation. They should have kept to their plan and delivered the slaves to the sisters, thus ensuring the ongoing blessing of the Cult of the Gorgon. They should have made the Blood Dragon wait, and if that meant leaving the forces of Daggerpoint to wait out a siege for a while, well, so be it.

If these slaves didn't arrive soon then the blessing of the Cult would soon become a curse. Their master was treading a fine line indeed.

This unit are intended to represent the Lord of Daggerpoint's personal retinue. Professional soldiers, much like the Crossbow armed units of the guard, and distinct from the militia of the city guard. Their allegiance is far more to their master, rather than to Daggerpoint as a place although I still wanted them to have a clear link to the region and add some character to the army overall. Working with an evolving theme this I've therefore named this unit The Gorgon's Guard.

Deciding to strip another 10 or so swordsmen rather than try to match the pre-existing pink-purple paint job and snake cult heraldry (even though it had inspired the idea of the Lustrian expedition),  added significantly to the unit making them a much more serious prospect on the battlefield rather than having two smaller units as I had considered. This makes them feel more like a mercenary company in their own right, which better fits the background.

Not too clear from some of these photos but if you look closely you can see that I've added some skulls and dark mossy elements to the bases.

The banner was done extremely quickly, freehand but inspired by one of the black and white line art patterns in the back of the DE Army book. The stone grey field made sense at the time (I had a lot of grey on my palette to use up, and the links between Gorgons and turning things to stone etc.) and as I was still treating it as a sketch or practice piece at that stage I didn't worry too much. In the end I decided I liked it enough to use it as it had brought some new inspiration into the background for my Dark Elves, but I acknowledge that it would probably have been better to go for something other than grey.

The pose of the musician sculpt is a little goofy (though not as goofy as the face on the standard bearer, thankfully now hidden behind his banner) and somehow fails to look as convincing as some of his high elf counterparts, but I was glad to have a genuine DE musician sculpt to complete the command unit.

I trialled a couple of press moulded shield designs, agreeing with the majority on the facebook group that round shields worked better for swordsmen for practical/historical reasons, and that both designs could be seen as suitable for Dark Elves. Once I had the gorgon connection I started to see that in the design of the round shields too, and decided to bring try and emphasise that with some snake like green tones.

The rough edges of the milliput press moulds (I mass produced them and wasn't always too precious about it) combined with the larger scale of the unit, plus what we already know about Daggerpoint's slightly second-hand feeling military gear, all suggested they wouldn't be highly decorated so I opted for darkly oiled but battered metal underneath the green painted design. These thoughts all make sense in my head, but as with the banner I feel the final execution on the shields is a little too grim and muted and I think I could have been a bit braver and brighter with them.

The figure for Zintalja the sorceress was a kind gift from Geoff SS from Oakbound, as part of a painting challenge I ran a few years back. The tab was blank, so no clues there, as is the back of the staff which feels odd for a GW sculpt of the period, and I've never been quite sure if it came from a line of DE minis I'm not familiar with (which is most of them) or if this is a fan sculpt or similar.

In any case she fits in with the unit nicely, providing both in game utility and some added character. I imagine her as being a priestess of the Cult of the Gorgon and sometime lover of the Lord of Daggerpoint, but also potentially a dangerous and spiteful paramour of his lieutenant and unit champion of the Gorgons Guard.

I''ve always loved this classic champion sculpt and it is one of the minis that always made me want a small Dark Elf force in my collection, even if just a small warband or mercenary unit.

The character of Vel'Rake is very much born of the sculpt and the pose. He seems to conjure just the right mix of cruelty and opulence of the Dark Elf upper classes, with his imperious stare and commanding pointing gesture and his heavy robe and massive sword. I felt he deserved some background and pathos despite his relatively junior ranks in the army (for now at least, I can definitely see him doing duty as a DE General on foot if the need arises).

Monthly Total:
28 Dark Elf Swordsmen, inc. Musician and standard bearer (
Light Armour, Swords, Shields) - 330 pts
Dark Elf Champion
(Light Armour, Sword, Shield) - 51pts
Dark Elf Sorceress - 59pts

Total for the month: 440 pts

Definitely not counted for the OWAC but just to add some character:

Although I didn't end up going for the snake themed unit heraldry for the Swordsmen I have kept the idea that the Dark Elves of Daggerpoint are themselves raiders and slavers into the southern lands of Lustria. While this flavour of Lizardmen date from WFB5 and are therefore out of OWAC bounds, in my head cannon for the army this small contingent of Lizardmen already in my collection could definitely represent the enslaved spoils of the Dark Elves' latest raid south.

If I need some extra infantry fodder in WFB4 games I can always use them with stats for Orcs and Goblins while keeping some of the geographic character for the army.

Tom's Bony Bit

For this month I have decided to do my wild card instead of my last rank and file.  I'm working on a second unit of cavalry and want to take my time on them.

This Screaming Skull catapult  is a slightly "soft" casting from Black Tree. it was very difficult as it was metal but some of the fixtures were misaligned we had to break and bend pieces to make them fit. In the end it has made it look like a ramshackle catapult, so I guess it fits the army.

Next up are two Skeleton Beastmen from Andrew Del in the Oldhammer community, and one from Reaper miniatures that I got for completing last year (Thanks Andrew!), to add to two units of skeleton warriors from the last OWAC.

One is actually a skeleton Lizardman so it is good to know my Dad's dark elves didn't get all of them on there trip to Lustria :p

This one needed a replacement arm after the arm holding the original cleaver broke off. I chose the spear and shield because they fit in with the spearman unit from last OWAC, who don't already have a Beastman and I wanted to spread them out through my army.

I like the design on the shield because it kind of looks like a vampire face!

Monthly Total:

Screaming skull catapult and crew - 74 pts
3 Skeleton warriors with shields, one with a spear - 28 pts

Total for the month: 102 pts

Thanks for reading my monthly post, good luck for the next month of the OWAC ;)

Jaakko and Rugluk - Rank & File month #4

Act 4

The dwarf fort jutted from the foothills all grey and unfriendly with it's thick walls and murder-holes. It looked like it didn’t want visitors. Rugluk Backstabba glared at it from his makeshift war throne.

“Why won’t da stunties come out?” he growled.

They’d been chucking boulders for three days straight. The walls didn’t care. Neither did the dwarfs-except to shoot back. A black orc chief had lost his head to a cannonball. A goblin regiment routed when their battering ram caught fire.

Rugluk bellowed at his lieutenants, kicked over the stew pot, and ordered a charge. It ended in complete chaos. A pump wagon broke up halfway across the field, splattering the crew and flattening three goblins who’d been hiding behind it. Then came the arrows. Cannonballs. Boiling oil.

That night, the camp was quiet. Too quiet. Rugluk didn’t like it.

He paced his tent, muttering. “They’z whisperin’. I know it. Gits think I’z lost it.” He scratched his chin. “Maybe I ‘ave. Or maybe it’s them dat needs stabbin’...”

A goblin runner crept in with bad news-another warband had left during the night. Rugluk stared at him for a long time before saying anything.

“Anyone else got ideas ‘bout leavin’?” he shouted to no one in particular.

Outside, the lads kept their heads low. The mutterin’ had started. They said Rugluk was cursed. Said da wyrm lied. Said da boss had lost it.

And Rugluk? He stared at the dwarf fort and thought he saw it grinning.

And so, the final Rank & File month is here! There’s still a lot I plan to do, but the heavy lifting is done. I can feel the pressure of the challenge lifting from my shoulders-and it feels nice. I chose to paint a big unit and two war machines, but honestly didn’t expect to finish all of them. The Goblins were quicker to paint than I expected, though I admit some midnight oil was burnt.

I managed to finish painting a unit of Goblins, two Skull Crushers, and a Sow (shown later). As mentioned earlier, Grom's Goblin Guard was a priority-Tom gave me part of the unit, so I really wanted to paint it this season. They’re a fine addition to the force, and as you can see, they’ve already successfully stormed the fort!

I like the elite look that monopose units have. A block of Goblins is always fearsome to behold… but yeah, okay-I admit they're only elite in the fluff.

The cheek and neck guards remind me of Roman legionaries and I let that influence the shield design.

I usually varnish my models after taking photos, and naturally, managed to chip some paint from the banner. There's a red checker pattern hidden somewhere under that layer of dirt.

I also managed to paint two Skull Crushers with crew. One of the front wheels is a spare made from green stuff.

This month in points:

I'm very happy with how things are going at the moment, but I understand that painting a horde is an endurance sport. I've already made some outlines for what I'd like to paint next season, but I still hope to reach the minimum army requirements in Warhammer Armies in addition to the OWAC requirements this season. That would mean painting a unit of Stickas, a few more Arrer Boyz, and of course Rugluk.

SIEGE

I'm keeping it simple in the Siege section.

I picked up this Sow from Wargames Foundry and gave it a simple paint job. I chose to keep it generic, without anything orky, so I can use it with other armies too. It came with some human crew that I’ll paint later.

The Sow is basically a mobile cover that you can push around the battlefield. It's not very manoeuvrable with it's movement of 3" and turn radius of three times the moved distance. You can enter it and shoot through the slits. I imagine putting a small unit of Arrers in it.  The points value depends on the crew capacity and varies between 10 and 30.

And that’s it for the month. I think Rugluk will have to wait a while longer, and May will be my Wild Card month, with a focus on the Siege section.
