As some of you may remember, my inspirational art for OWAC 9 was the superb 4th edition Army Book cover. And I had plans to try and recreate the models from that painting.
Well, I did just that and then decided to take it a step further.
So here's my version of the cover art:

| The Evil Threesome. |
The necromancer is pretty much the same model as the vampire in the cover and I didn't convert him at all.
The rider itself is untouched but the steed is almost completely redone. The base is a plastic skeleton horse with barding from a modern Perry medieval knight set. I then did some greenstuff sculpting to fill in the gaps. The head is from the same Perry kit with the lower part cut off and replaced with a skeleton horse's lower jaw. The original knight has a lot of bat decorations so I painted a similar symbol on his shield.
I'm not an experienced sculptor by any means and I always find it pretty intimidating, but I really like how the knight turned out!

| What a dashing duo! |
Originally I hoped to do some special terrain as well but I really didn't have time for that. (I painted a bunch of non-OWAC minis too...). Maybe I'll try to do it for the final month? We'll see!
For my final month my plan is simple: paint my army's general - a Liche on a Zombie Dragon. Stay tuned!

Fantastic work. I particularly like those wraiths. I remember a unit just like that in old battle reports!
ReplyDeleteThank you! The Wraith unit from the 4th ed Armybook is an integral part of my childhood, I'm happy to finally have one :)
DeleteExcellent recreation of the art. Even though the models aren't exact exact matches (but great work on the steed and banner) the feel is perfect and overall unmistakable
ReplyDeleteThanks! The recreation turned out better than I thought it would.
DeleteThere's a lot to love here. The banner is stunning and I love your amazing photography! Your recreation of the cover art is second to none
ReplyDeleteThanks bud!
DeleteOMG.
ReplyDeleteThat's some insane work. Can't wait for the Zombie dragon next month, and then later....army shots!
Gotta say I'm looking forward to getting all the models on the table myself. I didn't think I'd get this many minis painted!
DeleteAbsolutely gobsmacked!
ReplyDeleteAll the minis in this project have been brilliant but this bit is outstanding. The converted Knight is fantastic - I once tried to make a skeletal horse like that and failed horribly - the banner is spectacular even by your standards (snigger), and that final cover receation is everything you could hope for.
All that, *and* you continue to make those daft old wraiths into masterpieces.
Very excited to see what Zombie Dragon you've gone with and to see it beautifully presented (no pressure)
Who you calling daft? Those Wraiths were an essential part of my childhood! (They are pretty silly though).
DeleteAlso well done on that standard-joke!
And thanks :)
Just unreal! You've absolutely nailed the cover art recreation, it's honestly hard to tell the difference at first glance! Amazing individual miniatures as well - as usual.I particularly love the unit of wraiths
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot!
