So for the first month of the challenge I went with a squad of tactical marines, i.e. the bread and butter of a Space Marine force. Which is not surprising, really, since I always start any painting project with the regular rank & files.
What was a first, though, was painting space marines. Yes, you read that right, these are the first space marines I've ever painted in my life. As I mentionned in my previous post, while I did play some Rogue Trader in my youth I went with the Imperial Guards, and then went fantasy and never looked back. I wonder how many 40 something wargamers can make that claim?
Anyways, it was fun. I never really noticed before how much of a marine is made up of one colour. So yeah, my red pots worked overtime on this!
This squad is made-up entirely of metal marines, lovely old school sculpts with loads of personnality. There's a lot of small different details on the armour depending on the model, which I find adds to the realism and gives them a more realistic and campaign look than the current GW's marines.
They are a bit darker in real life but red is always such a bitch to photograph right |
The gold details of the Red Templars are usually the aquila and the shoulder trims, i.e. two things missing from the Mark VI Corvus armour, and since I wanted the gold to be more than just tiny details I decided to give my marines a golden pauldron, and I'm happy with the results. As you see, the sargents and my other leaders will sport a white pauldron with golden details. I was hesitating between white or gold. You know, those minor details than drive you insane and sometimes paralyze you in your process! Lots of thinking was done in the shower on that one! But a decision was made in the end (shout out to my wife Laurie who also participated in that decision making).
The lovely bases are from Dragonforge. Great product but be advised we are talking about a 2 months turnaround. So plan in advance! I decided to go the opposite route of what I often see, and went with hex for my normal marines, and rounds for my leader. I just wanted to use as many hex as possible really. I find the muted grey of the stones contrasts well with the colourful marines.
A close-up of some of my favourites from the squad |
So, the technical stuff :
Red Templars tactical squad : 250 pts
Next month? Well it's a short one. Nevetheless, my plan is to terminate the shit out of it.
Well you weren't kidding, they certainly are red!
ReplyDeleteVery nice, can't wait to see you tackle something bigger.
Thanbks, my army is mostly marines, but I do have a few bigger things!
DeleteThose ended up lovely! Especially since it was so much trouble getting good beakies!
ReplyDeleteIndeed, although these I've had for ages. It's the other 20 that were hard to source!
DeleteThese are really lovely, chief. The gold pauldrons are a really excellent touch.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteThese look lovely Iannick - well done on your first Space Marines!!!
ReplyDeleteHey Greg! Thanks, means a lot coming from the expert!
DeleteGreat job! The red turned out well. Nice to see a group of RT Marines painted up!
ReplyDeleteGreat job on these. Those transfers really did the job
ReplyDeleteI'm really happy with how they came out
DeleteWell done. One of the great things about Marines is how colour scheme completely transforms them - the same models feel totally different in my chapter colours (and not just because yours are better painted)
ReplyDeleteThanks! Quite true. Just the choice of colours probably conveys an impression. Mine are conservative red (when it comes to SM), yours are eccentric teal and yellow!
DeleteYas! The whit pauldron looks cracking - as do the hex bases, and the marines. It's all cracking!
ReplyDeleteThanks, much appreciated!
DeleteI like them! I may have to step away from the Dark Elves and try some of them. (now looking over my shoulder for that DE assassin)
ReplyDeleteOh oh...did I manage to make you pick another army next year?!
DeleteNice! Didn't kown there were so many metal models with these types of helmets.... hmmm, plans for future OWAC :)
ReplyDeleteYes! Would love to see that! There's many more with helmets. Although of course they are the most expensive ones usually.
DeleteVery cool looking beaky marines. That comes from someone who never really warmed up to 40K. I really like the subtle red highlights and transitions on the armour and the cool green glass effect of the visors. Good choice putting them on gray bases - the red/gray contrast works very well and makes the models pop.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments Maciek! See my previous post on my relationship to 40K. I like Rogue Trader, although I haven't played in forever, less enamoured of the rest.
DeleteCracking work on some lovely minis - always coveted an all metal Beaky army but I'll have to make do with the few MK1 plastics I have. Liking the Fleur-de-Lys on their shoulder pads!
ReplyDeleteThank you! They will be some plastics in the future, will be interesting to see the difference once painted
DeleteLoving your first foray into the 41st Millennium Iannick! Even a stoic WFB'r like me can appreciate what I thin i'm right in saying are the iconic 'beakkies'? Loving the gold pauldron. Really great scheme throughout. I'll be making a note of that transfer company as those transfers have by Brets written all over them :-) Can't wait to see the Termies!
ReplyDeleteYep, classic "beakies". Oh ues, that transfer company produces all kinds of great stuff for Brets. Fantasy wargamers don't make enough use of the historical products, imho
DeleteLove the contrast in style, both in figures and colours, between these and the ultra marines.Transfers FTW.
