Graeme's Wood Elves - OWAC 9 Introduction Post

Graeme's Wood Elves - OWAC 9 Introduction Post

Back in the OWAC saddle again!

After the embarrassingly swift trips to the Field of Bones in my last few OWAC attempts, I'm back with my Wood Elf army.

If many of the figures look familiar, it's because many were in my line up for OWAC V, and the rest were in my original plan for OWAC VI, before I defected to #teamskaven! Yes, they've been languishing in a cupboard for almost four years. If you're interested, you can check out the posts here:

OWAC V: https://oldworldarmychallenge.blogspot.com/2021/12/graemes-owac-v-introduction-post-wood.html

OWAC VI: https://oldworldarmychallenge.blogspot.com/2022/12/graemes-owac-vi-introduction-post.html

Hopefully I've learned from some of my previous mistakes - this year I have enough figures fully prepped for the full OWAC, and then some:

My goal for this OWAC is to focus on completing the mandatory 30 archers for a 3rd edition Wood Elf army, and to build from there.

Since OWAC 9 is based on selecting a pice of old GW art and theming the project around it, I'm going for the box art for Skarloc's Wood Elf Archers Regiment of Renown:

In my 30+ years of collecting, I never actually owned a Skarloc RoR box! This year I managed to buy a lot of Wood Elf archers with the front and back covers of the box, which is where I got the photo from. I plan on getting it framed and hung up somewhere for inspiration for the challenge.

I'll not be following the colour scheme too closely, as I'm going for a combination of a summer palette with a weathered and ancient look for these Wood Elves, but it's definitely a good reference to work from.

Now for a closer look at the army.

The bulk of the army will be made up of archers, and archer elites.

Archer unit one:

Archer unit two:

Archer unit three:

Archer unit four, made up of the figures from Skarloc's archers Regiment of Renown, with a small conversion of Glam, to make him look a little more like the illustration on the box. I'll be treating them as regular archers for the challenge, rather than scouts. This means I should be able to hit the compulsory archer minimum number for the force.

Archer unit five:

You'd be forgiven if you're getting bored of seeing Elven archers by now, so there's a few units of non-archers too.

A fairly large unit armed with spears. At this point they only have spears, but I'm looking for suitable shields to add somewhere, to match the 3rd edition army list. If anyone has added shields to these figures, either slung on the back, or attached to the arm, I'd be really interested to see how you did it! My attempts so far haven't looked very convincing.

Beastmaster with bears:

A small unit of Wardancers, armed with two hand weapons. There are a couple of conversions in there, for the sharp-eyed:

Finally, some wizards to lead the army:

I've converted a few of these models, just for some variety, and am quite pleased with how they turned out.

There are a handful of heroes, more infantry troops, and some bonuses in the works, but we'll have to wait and see if I find the time to finish the prep and include them in this year's challenge.

Just for the book keeping, here's an estimate of points for a 3rd edition WFB army, based on what's prepped:

Characters

1 Wood Elf Sylphseer (Level 15 wizard) - (206 points)
Equipped with a horse, and hand weapon

2 Wood Elf Spellsingers (Level 10 wizards) - (236 points)
Equipped with a hand weapon

2 Wood Elf Woodfeys (Level 5 wizards) - (156 points)
Equipped with a hand weapon

1 Wood Elf Guardian Wardancer (Level 10 hero) - (103 points)
Equipped with light armour, and two hand weapons

Total: 691 points

Troops

10 Wood Elf archers - (110 points)
Equipped with longbows and hand weapons

10 Wood Elf archers - (110 points)
Equipped with longbows and hand weapons

10 Wood Elf Guards (+2 missile elite) - (150 points)
Equipped with longbows, light armour, and hand weapons

7 Wood Elf archers - (110 points)
Equipped with longbows, light armour, shields, and hand weapons

5 Wood Elf Glade Runners (scouts) - (80 points)
Equipped with longbows, and hand weapons

20 Wood Elf Warrior Kinband - (180 points)
Equipped (for now) with spears, and hand weapons

1 Wood Elf Beastmaster - (15 points)
Equipped with l
ight armour, and a hand weapon

5 Bears - (100 points)

6 Wood Elf Wardancers - (138 points)
Equipped with light armour, and two hand weapons

Total: 993 points

So, currently not quite enough archers to hit the minimum compulsory number for 3rd edition, but I'm still planning to add some models to the archer units, either with troops, or musicians and standard bearers. If I don't manage that, the Guards will be demoted to regular archers, and I'll update the points values.

It's a bit daunting seeing all these Wood Elves together on my worktop. I'm going to be realistic, and state right from the start that there's no way I'll get all of these painted - I'm just too slow. I'm going to start off painting them in batches of three or four, and see how far I get.

Nice to see some great looking armies in the works for OWAC9. Fingers crossed we make it to the finish line!

Good luck to everyone!

Shadespyre's April Post - Rank and File Month IV - OWAC VIII - High Elves of Lothern (+411 points)

OWAC VIII - Rank and File Month IV - High Elves of Lothern

April

Probably my busiest month of the whole OWAC, lots and lots of progress but only a little bit of it is ready to show to you.

Let's start with the next / last unit of cavalry. The second unit of six, this time with the grey-white horse variant, and with the shields completed.

Yes, I would love to have had these based by now but I've been prioritising painting. Basing soon, I promise!

That's the last of the 24 copies of the same horse, I think. Phew. Also the last of the Regiments of Renown troopers... but there are some command models to come in "Leaders" month.

So that means no more painting multiple copies of identical figures, right? Oh, no, it does NOT! Because with my initial "promise" pretty much completed, I've started on some more troops...

These ten (nominally identical) archers are from the C08 High Elves range. I think this guy is a "Fighter-Thief" in good old AD&D parlance. It's not easy to collect unit sized numbers of these models, but I've got a bit lucky here. On close inspection, three of these had varying amounts of lead rot and needed some greenstuff - there's one at the back where all of his robes are visibly cracked, and that all had to be filled. I'll probably jettison him in favour of a unit leader at some point.

I find it takes a couple of attempts to reach a good colour balance with these very busy sculpts. These started in blue robes but came out very dark overall, and are a completely different prospect with white cloth instead.

I think the fancy costumes do a good job of conveying "+1 Missile Elite" vibes, don't you?

Finally for now, here's one of the inspirations behind this project's colour scheme:

This is a hand made coffee cup that I got from a clever friend of mine, it sits on my desk all day (usually with a handful of sweets or snacks in it because I don't want to risk ruining it with coffee!). I don't remember actually deciding to use exactly that shade of blue because of the cup, but it can't be a coincidence, can it?

That's it for April!

Shadespyre's February Post- Rank & File II - OWAC VIII - High Elves of Lothern (+260 points)

OWAC VIII - Rank and File Month (II) - High Elves of Lothern

February

As promised last month, I've shifted to taking on some infantry this time around, making a start on the almost infinite* pile of identical spearmen that I have inflicted on myself. Once again, painting a Regiment of Renown gives me an "official" description to interpret:

"The uniform comprises a close fitting helmet, which is gilded. The tunic is padded and white, the belts and other decorative items are red. Spear shafts are blue, whilst most metal is either steel or silver."

It took me a while to get the colours mentioned in places that I liked them, which I finally acheived having waved three different versions at some of my painting pals until they gave opinions! In the end, I think it was the red tassles on the spears which made it work.

Obviously, there is a gap left here for the command group. Though I've made a start, I'll be leaving those for later, partly because I need to build a standard pole, and partly because I need to decide on the theme and heraldy before I do that. Plus "Leader Month" is compulsory and so I need to save something to put in it!

*it turns out there were only twenty of them, but it felt like more.

This isn't everything I've been working on. Progress continues on the cavalry because I want to make sure I can present at least one more unit of those in March. This means I have tried out two more colour schemes for white horses:

I'm not sure that brown tails and manes on white horses is very realistic, but it looks quite pretty. And at the end of the day everyone is looking at the riders, really.

I'm also feeling confident enough with my progress that I've started prepping some extra units for this army. These are taken from the non-Regiment of Renown C09 range, so it would be really nice to be able to get them painted up this year. As previously highlighted, some of them are quite elaborate, so might take a lot of painting!

NEXT TIME:

More Elves, obviously - probably a second unit of cavalry. Maybe some idea of what I'm going to put on all those blue shields?

Shadespyre's January Post - OWAC VIII - High Elves of Lothern (271 points)

OWAC VIII - Rank and File Month - High Elves of Lothern

January

Finally under way!

As is traditional, I started with a pile of undercoated miniatures and a vague idea of a colour scheme. Actually, a little less vague because there is a description provided for the Regiments of Renown... for Elwing's Elf Cavalry: "The Elves are dressed in blue uniforms, whilst most of the leatherwork is black or red: Helmets and other metal fittings are silver or silver plated. Spear-shafts are painted blue, with white, blue or red pennants indicating different Companies."

Here's how I've interpreted that:

Because you can never have too many paints, I treated myself to some new ones. I've added Templar Blue, Ashen Blue and Glacial Blue, all from the Reaper Masters Series, to my collection for this project.

Just one unit of six for now, but that meets the monthly requirements so I don't mind. Obviously, they will get some sort of heraldry added to the shields at some point - probabaly a white symbol of some sort. I've got a few ideas but I want to stew on them for a while.

Likewise, I'll do a big basing session when I've got more minis painted. If you've seen my Wood Elves from OWAC VII you'll know what to expect.

One aspect of this project which could get tiresome is the repeated painting of the same miniatures. For example, every cavalryman across three units is riding the same horse! While I want to have a degree of uniformity, I've decided to do different variants of white horse. Here's a comparison of the first two, I may try for four varieties in all.

Alert viewers will notice that the unit above are all riding the "blond" variant, so yes, I have started on a second unit already.

Scores for January:       271    points   6 models

1 x Champion          (Level 5, heavy Armour, Shield, Lance, Warhorse)        61 points
5 x Silver Helms     (Light Armour, Shield, Lance, Warhorse, Standard)    210 points

ENTRY FEE MINIS

With a choice of THREE worthy recipients this time around, I was at a loss what to paint for who! With so many projects on my to do list, my supply of "spare" miniatures is quite depleted. Fortunately, as I trawled the depths of my collection, I found a selection of beasts of burden! Highly fitting for the "baggage train" them of OWAC VIII, so I plucked three of them out to paint up:

I'll be posting one of these to each of our committee members as a Thank You for their organisational efforts. I hope they will suit.

NEXT TIME:

More Elves, obviously. Here's a sneak preview of some WIP infantry

Shadespyre's Introduction Post - OWAC VIII - 3rd Edition High Elves of Lothern

Shadespyre Intro Post - OWAC VIII - 3rd Edition High Elves

Introduction Post

It was always likely to be Elves again. For OWAC VI, I painted a rather idiosyncratic Dark Elf army, loosely themed around AD&D Drow and made up almost entirely of ancient pre-slotta miniatures. For OWAC VII, I painted a much more traditional 3rd edition Wood Elf army, consisting mostly of mid to late 80s minis much like those pictured in the Warhammer Armies book. And I added allied contingents from the Zoats and Halfling lists in the same source.

And then once the OWAC had ended, I pushed on and added three more Wood Elf units to the army.

I still have a lot of Elf options open to me, though.

For the second time, I started prepping a force of Rogue Trader Space Elf Raiders for an OWAC. And for the second time, I've let the lack of a clear concept for a colour scheme and the fact that several fellow OWACers have similar plans put me off committing to it. That and the fact that I've had a Big Idea for it which I haven't yet worked out how to implement. So maybe next time?

I considered swapping to Craftworld Eldar (requires too much shopping) or Harlequins (not a force I want to paint to a time limit) or to one of my non-Elvish options. But then I realised that the answer was obviously High Elves.

Why? Firstly, they are the next entry in the Warhammer Armies book! Secondly, they are also available as an Allies list for Wood Elves, so I can justify using the same basing style and save my creative energy for thinking about other things. And thirdly, I have a collection of mid 80s High Elves which is big enough to make a small army. And fourthly, Aly Morrison sculpted some of the most distinctive Elves that Citadel ever produced, and I love them in all their bonkers glory.

C08 High Elves

Here's one of my many old Citadel Miniatures mini cases, this layer has at least one of each of all the releases in this range. I completed this collection some years ago, and never really considered it to be a potential army until very recently.

It's a lousy picture, so here are some of the catalog entries for them, borrowed as ever from Stuff of Legends. A bit annoying that Citadel repeatedly advertised the same minis even though there are more than 30 in the range, but they give an idea of the furry-hatted, curly-shoed, overly-feathered silliness of them, as well as the intruging selection of maces, axes and fancy polearms alongside the traditional bows and swords. I'd love to know what brought Aly to use this style, which I think draws on Persian and Indian influences, although some of the minis remain very much in the familar pseudo-European look.

This range came out late in 1984. It's a fully pre-slotta range, part of a brief Golden Era of Citadel minis which has words embossed onto the top of the bases (I'm sure I've talked about this before, I'm obsessed with this phase in miniature history.) In common with the C10 Half-Orcs which were released a little earlier, these guys are each assigned AD&D character classes - Fighter, Cleric, Thief, Magic-user and even multiclass combinations - because the D&D player was still the core of their market at this time. Within a year of release, these were replaced by a new slotta-tabbed C08 range, still sculpted by Morrison but back to a more conventional Elven aesthetic.

I know what you're thinking - some of those silly Elves are quite cute, but an army? It's mostly character models, there's no musicians or cavalry or... anything. And you're right. Which is why, as much as I love them, most of these will be staying in their box for this project.

BUT Citadel Miniatures (and Aly) have us covered - either side of Christmas 1984 they released two Elvish Regiments of Renown.

Regiments of Renown
RR13 Lothern City Guard
RR10 Elwing's Elven Guard Cavalry

As you can see from the art, these are very much in tune with the other High Elves, if a little less gaudy for the rank and file models. These are the minis that I'm mostly going to be using for this army. Worth noting that while the cavalry models are still on solid bases, the infantry are among the first releases with slotta tabs.

So, here's a snapshot of the core of my army, all based up ready for undercoating. This consists of a large unit of Lothern City Guard and a full two dozen Elven Guard Cavalry, which I shall split into 3 squadrons. There's also a couple of other minis in there which I will discuss when I come to paint them.

Yes, this is a much smaller project than I've undertaken recently. This is partly because I felt quite burned out after painting 250 Warhammer minis in the last year, and also because I've started playing in a second fortnightly RPG group, which means less time to paint minis each weekend - and of course I will inevitably be painting minis for that game, too. And let's not forget that painting 25 cavalry will feel like painting at least 50 Infantry.

I do have some extra units that I hope to paint alongside these, and don't forget that big box of characters to dip into. Maybe this will even become the push I need to paint the full set of those?

Bases

A quick bit about basing. For my pre-slotta Dark Elf army I switched to using MDF bases which I drilled holes for magnets into. I liked how they came out, but there was a surprising amount of prep involved - drilling and sanding every base.

So this time round I ventured into CAD and designed and printed my own bases:

These have a 5mm magnet hole and a 2mm high lip around them, the hope being to conceal the solid bases within them and backfill with basing material. I was able to print these out on my very basic PLA filament printer fairly easily with very few mis-prints. I should probably have put two magnet holes in the cavalry bases, but I think one will be enough to protect against jostling even if I wouldn't dare turn the unit upside down like I can with the infantry.

Army List

I haven't written a full army list yet, but looking at the 3rd ed Warhammer Armies book:

20 Silver Helms @35 points each = 700 points
20 Guard @ 13 points each = 260 points

So I'm going to sail past 1000 points just by adding command options, let alone characters.

I'll be compiling a proper 3rd edition list unit by unit, as I go...

Paul's Wood Elves of Avelorn - Rank and File Month 4: There's Woodies in the trees! (696 pts)

My final rank and file month is dedicated to my very dear friend, Shaun (previously seen commanding Undead alongside Spawn #1). We've known each other for over 30 years and Warhammer and RPGs and all things nerdy have underpinned our friendship all that time. Indeed it was Shaun who pointed me towards the Oldhammer community when I picked up my brushes again back in 2013/14, which has proved to be a huge boost to my painting and hobbying in all sorts of ways!

Wood Elves always make me think of Shaun and these sculpts have particular resonance for various reasons, so this is by way of a thank you to him as well as a trip down memory lane.

First up are Skarloc's Archers, a "Regiment of Renown" in Warhammer lore going back to the 1980s. Every single one of them is a work of art. I love these sculpts, some of Jes Goodwin's best work of the period in my view. I love the storied history of the unit, the crazy mix of characters who nearly obscure the man himself, the detail on the 'basic' archers, and the rich possibilities and flexibility all of that brings to using the unit in games or RPGs.

People often talk about big miniatures like giants and dragons, or special characters being intimidating and needing a bit of a painting run up before they can do them justice. I think I felt a bit like that about these models. That real need to do them justice and to pay proper homage to the (imho) golden era of old school gaming from whence they hail.

The description on the box includes this line on colour scheme: "The scouts wear leather surcoats over their chain mail, in various shades of green and brown for camouflage"

I already had the idea that as experienced Scouts I wanted them to look like an elite military unit, so I turned to a range of military uniform colours like US Olive Drab, English Uniform, Steel Legion Drab etc. and kept everything fairly muted bringing in Dryad Bark for a more matte finish to the leather boots etc. I also brought in Vallejo Hull Red as a connection to the core units of the army, but also brought in more blues and yellows, which should allow them to fit in with other elements still to come.

I also opted for matte grey on the chain mail, with the idea that shiny metal should be kept to a minimum when hiding in forests. The only problem was that by the time I made that decision I had already used metallic paints on the exposed weapons for some of the heroes. One of the pit falls of batch painting across units when using up paint mixes during the OWAC, but in true OWAC style there is no time to look back, only to keep painting!

Here we have the man himself, Skarloc 'The Hooded One' aka 'Captain' on the flyer. I can hear Clannad just by looking at him and I'm pretty sure the shade of Michael Praed lurks under that hood. I think he would also make a great (Dever/Chalk) Lone Wolf.  It's a brilliantly brooding sculpt, but the thing that always puzzled me is that he isn't featured that prominently in the box art, as a result a younger me thought that the archer with the patch over one eye was Skarloc. This idea has always sort of stuck with me, and as a result I have promoted the eye-patch archer to unit leader when hooded Skarloc is busy with his other 1980s side projects.

Next up is "Araflane Warskald" the unit musician. Another great sculpt and the use of animal skin makes him seem more celtic and savage than later WE sculpts, which is something I leant into with this unit alongside the military uniform colours.

In a previous post I hinted that another 80's influence might be creeping in to my WE colour schemes, but now wasn't the time for double denim. Rather the woodland fashion question for May was one of Plaid vs Tartan vs Not Getting Carried Away!! OK... maybe a just a little denim to bring that blue back in.

Two of my favourite characters/sculpts from this regiment got special treatment and I tried my hand at Plaid/tartan patterns for the first time. Not entirely successful, but I'm happy enough and I learnt it is best to keep things simple. Getting the flow of the lines seems more important than the complexity of the pattern.

"Kaia Stormwitch" is described as both Standard Bearer and/or Mage in the unit description and I love this versatility in the sculpt. In a more direct nod to the core units of the army I've made the heart and vines on the staff/standard the same dark red and green combo.

Do ask her which army surplus stores she shops in. Don't ask her if it's real animal skin.

"Glam, the Laughing Warrior" aka Wardancer/Champion, probably needs his skin tone lightening a touch, although I'm equally tempted to go back and give him some suitably Bowie-esque face paint. Tartan trousers were already a stretch on this model though, and I didn't want to ruin the Slaine type vibe of the sculpt which I think the darker tone helps with.

It doesn't help with photos though. Sorry about that.

Not officially a member of Scarlok's Archers, this is the falconer from the Wood Elf  War Wain, who I think makes a good mage (for when rules don't allow your standard bearer to also be a mage - lame!). The blue and slight touches of yellow are also a nod to another emerging faction within my Wood Elves, while hopefully not taking him too far away from the rest of Scarlok's Archers.

I like the fact he has a falcon on his arm, and wish there were more Beastmaster options in WFB 4/5. I think Wood Elves lost something in not being able to have more animals in their forces, but the presence of the falcon marks him out from the standard Wood Elf and brings us on to the subject of "Multi-purposing and Special Characters by Proxy" as in a pinch he could double as Skaw the Falconer.

As could the next guy, a Chaz Elliot sculpt from RPE who I thought also fit with the Scouts, but because of the basing stands a little taller so has ended up as a slightly separate character model. He is painted in a mix of the Chrace/Winter colour scheme, and the newer Blue-Yellow scheme, while keeping in the broad range of the Scarlok's Archers scheme and wears the three armed branch emblem on his broach as Kaia Stormwitch does - all in the name of flexibility. He could also do double (triple?) duty as Sceolan from the WFB4/5 WE Army Book if needed.

A final note on the birds, I have decided to use colour schemes inspired by birds of prey native to the British Isles, so not-Skaw is accompanied by a not-quite-Goshawk, and not-Sceolan is accompanied by the slightly smaller, not-quite-Sparrowhawk.

If Scarlok's Archers are an iconic Oldhammer unit then for me the iconic Middlehammer era  Wood Elf unit are the Waywatchers (aka Tree Ninjas as I have started affectionately calling them while painting).

I can remember Shaun and I being very taken with both the concept and the sculpts (especially the one with the balaclava style mask who looks like a Wood Elf Beach Head from Gi Joe/Action Force!) and almost immediately incorporating them as an influence into our D&D games and characters.

Those of us who have been painting Elves in and around the OWAC for the past few years have been noted to remark on more than one occasion that we are DEFINITELY NOT competing with Mariano! ;)

This year was even worse for me as I would be painting Wood Elves alongside the master himself, so more so than ever I. Am. Not. Competing. With. Mariano.... (say it to yourself quietly ten times before you snap your brushes and cry) ... but.... (joking aside) I have been taking inspiration from him! :D

So these are my most Mariano-esque Wood Elves to date, working more with light and dark, I've kept to a brutally simple green-brown colour palette to pick out the detail, letting the sculpts and poses do the heavy lifting themselves. No glorious rainbow NMM however! I know I could have taken these further, and been braver with the brightness levels on the green highlights, but the slightly understated colour scheme keeps them looking like an elite military unit in my mind.

Finally we come to a mini I'm not even sure how I acquired (possibly as part of a trade with a friendly UK hobbyist?) but ended up fitting my army, and the theme of this post, absolutely perfectly. If anyone can identify him then shout in the comments, I'm not sure I've ever really tried tbh.

In a post on another blog about another project entirely, I mentioned that there is a long honoured and respectful tradition in my D&D games for Elven Rangers (and by extension in that RT project, Eldar Scouts) to be named after Nigerian footballers... which was definitely also Shaun's fault.

Yet there was always one who stood apart from this tradition...

Shaun's  character Garion "Red Fox" Kevanarial was directly inspired by the Wood Elf Waywatchers from Warhammer and we found fruitful parallels in the TSR AD&D 2nd edition era material and this sculpt could be the very image of how he started out (or indeed how his brother Allain looks in the Dragon Magazine we borrowed from), before his truly epic descent into Chaotic Neutral naughtiness and on to allegedly double agent evil-doing and Demi-god impersonation... You know, PROPER D&D, with Thac0 and variable XP tables and hard maths....

Anyway... the point is, it reminds me of Shaun so this one is called Garion :)

F*ckin' Tree Ninjas! Yeah!! :D

Tom's Bony Bit:

I am so fed up of painting these stupid skeletons! They have taken me some time to come back to but I am glad they are finished and I can move on to my wild cards!

I have kept with the colour scheme and recipe, although I had to go back over some of the red to get the right fade. I like the rusty metal finish and how they tie to the rest of my army.

Monthly Total:

10 Skeletons w/ light armour, shields, spears (inc. Musician and Standard bearer) - 144 pts

Total: 144 pts

You can see below I have added some models I have already painted to boost the unit and I will add some more for the future.

Shadespyre asked about DnD models so I included this necromancer as another example. She has been undercover as an agent of the Red Wizards Of Thay, so her colour scheme is reversed with red magic and purple and pink robes. Both DnD Necromancer models were very difficult because of being one piece sculpts and having very difficult areas to reach.

Good luck to everyone for the last month, the end is just around the corner!
