Jaakko and Rugluk - Leader month

Act 6

Rugluk stood atop the hill, armour dented, bandaged gut still leaking a bit. Behind him, his bruised and battered horde gathered, grumbling and picking their teeth. The siege had dragged on long enough.

“Dis time,” Rugluk barked, “I lead da charge!”

A confused cheer followed. Some orcs clanged weapons.

With a mad roar, Rugluk thundered toward the gate, his boyz behind him. Ladders slammed against walls. Rocks flew. The ram finally broke the gate-and to everyone’s shock, they made it in.

“We done it!” Snagrat screamed. “We’z in!”

But inside, the fort was… quiet. Too quiet.

No dwarfs. No traps. No boiling oil. Just cold stone.

The place had been deserted.

Rugluk stormed through the halls, snarling at shadows. The warband followed, less triumphant by the step. Finally, they reached the hall of the dwarf king. Empty. Just a few smouldering torches and a broken throne.

Rugluk found the tunnel entrance soon enough. It was dug out behind the throne and reeking of stale ale and beard oil. The dwarfs had slipped underground like weasels.

No loot. No prisoners. No glory.

Just silence.

Later, Rugluk sat on the cold floor of the keep, cradling a dwarf skull he’d found in the rubble.

He stared at the skull, one eye twitching and briefly contemplated the very act of being.

“So… dis is wot I gets. No gold. No crown. No songs.”

The skull didn’t answer.

"Er... what's da plan now, boss?" a goblin asked nervously.

Rugluk stood, tossed the skull over his shoulder, and grinned, blood on his teeth.

“We find where da stunties went. An’ we knock again.”

And so the final mandatory month of painting for OWAC Season 8 is behind us. This season felt shorter than the previous ones, and I’m surprised we’re already at the end! I’ve really enjoyed working on this army and look forward to returning to the project in future seasons. While this month was less productive than the earlier ones, I’m still happy with what I have to show you.

I painted Ruglug, his bodyguard, the Army Standard bearer, a troll minder, a spider swarm, and three mantlets. I also started painting a shaman and some goblins, which I hope to finish in July and include in the wrap-up post.

Rugluk Backstabba, the leader of my orc horde and the main character of the story. I really like this "Giant Orc Chieftain" model and thoroughly enjoyed painting him. Naturally, he has to be accompanied by his bodyguard.

Drodab Ironbrow — the loyal bodyguard of Rugluk Backstabba (and Aruglid Longface).

The Army Standard of Rugluk Backstabba. I decided to stick to a classic design, as with the previous banners, and I’m really happy with how this one turned out. The tankard shield was, of course, captured from my Bugman’s Rangers, and I plan to reuse the tree design in my Wood Elf army-if I ever end up collecting one.

I had some spare time, so I decided to paint a troll minder. For now, he’ll be looking after trolls from Slargash’s army, but I will paint some trolls of his own later.

As I still had some spare time, I painted a spider swarm. The base includes a frame that holds two small dice to track remaining wounds.

This month in points:

SIEGE

You can find three mantlets from the group photo above. The mantlets are simply covers that cost 5 points each. The ones I painted are from Wargames Foundry, but I also crafted three more from wood. Unfortunately, I ran out of time and haven’t painted them yet.

And that’s it for now. I’ll need to hurry and get more models painted, as I’ve got a game scheduled with this army in just a few weeks.

👑 KORAG RISEN – Benjamin's Wrap Up Post

I've actually got a fever whilst writing this - but apparently it's not COVID.
Could it be OWAC withdrawal? Ask me again in 2023.

We're finally here! It just seems like yesterday that I was hurriedly pouring my heart out to you guys about all things beast and Bob. It's been an amazing learning curve, figuring out pretty much everything from painting, converting, sculpting, and it's been really thrilling to see these skills develop. I'm certainly not new to these skills, but I've never really FINISHED anything at this scale before. Seeing the army completed now is a little surreal, and it's hard to imagine life not working on it.

Will we see a version 4?

Loose Ends!

So I had a few bits and bobs left over, specifically to join the Pestigor and Spearman units...

Spot the Ral Partha AD&D figures...

I also wanted to finish these guys before I forgot what colours to use...

Beasts on beasts!

And some other guys got a touch up...

Consistency is key...

I was also obsessing over Bryan Ansell's 1987 Golden Demon t-shirt, so ended up making something silly to commemorate the event...

Wait until those nerds at work see THIS.

Korag's Horde

The photography set up in my cluttered dungeon really struggles at this scale!

In Conclusion...

It's been really fun to work on this, and the monthly deadlines and community support has been excellent throughout. Seeing everyone's projects develop at such an inspiring level has left me feeling very lucky to have shared this experience in such rich and valiant company.

Will I do it all again? Certainly! But maybe not quite at the same scale. The sheer quantity of figures, conversions and sculpting required did cause this to take over my life a little more than expected, and at times the creativity and quality control became sidelined to just get the stuff done. But I'm sat on a big hairy horde as intended.

A big thank you to everyone who reads these posts, the courageous and inspiring challengers, the enigmatic Bob Olley, my patient and supportive girlfriend and to the mighty overlord himself for creating this platform for us to showcase our labours. It's been fabulous, frantic and most of all fun.

So what next? More beastmen? Possibly. More Olley stuff? Certainly!

See you next time...

You're doing it the wrong way you idiot.

Benjamin's Double Beastmen Special 🐑 - THE ARMY OF KORAG - Rank and File Month IV (1138pts)

Horns aplenty

Well well well. Here we are again. And despite all my efforts - I'm writing this on the last day of the month! But this time it's the slightly less manic time of 10.30 11.30(ish). The month didn't go as planned and as usual this whole project's ambition seemed to have collapsed under the weight of its own hubris...

However - with 50 furry brutes finished I can't complain! It's also just occurred to me that I have now painted ALL of Bob's original beastmen, which in itself feels like a bit of a personal milestone.

So what was the plan?

Well originally this was going to be all about the spooky magical stuff. A shaman, the chaos shrine - possibly even some undead Beastmen... this was ALSO going to be coupled with finishing all of my outstanding infantry (February's Pestigor blob especially). The converting on the shrine alone was going to be a hefty job - so I really needed to simplify the workload into a more painting-focussed month.

See you next month...

With that infantry month in mind I thought - well, why not make the units a bit bigger? The pestigors were 36 strong, why not bump them to 40? And the spearmen got a bump thanks to a flutter on ebay and the darker arts of press moulding. Well batch painting two units of 40 really crushed my attention span, so I had to downsize the operation to keep up interest. We have the more bijou result of two 24 strong units.

See you next YEAR...

Anyway, that's the apologies out of the way - what DID we do?

The Pestigors! (GROB'S HORDE)

Honestly painted, warts and all.

Finally finished(ish)! I got these through base layers and an initial wash back in February.

In my little story these represent a big horde of beastmen who have toiled away in the mines for a bit too long - and all look a bit decrepit. The warts and spots were quite a fun addition of the Tzaangors back in January that give them a little boost visually.

The banner is a converted pigman from Midlam Miniatures, and the drummer is an Essex Dwarf with a pig head - which itself was sourced from a Ral Partha pigman which made the champion. A full head-and-body carousel.

This unit also includes some of my bob-xillaries. Miscellaneous Bob Olley models and conversions to fill the ranks. Not all of them got painted sadly - but the ones that did were some of my favourites.

Darwin would be so pleased.

The Spearmen! (RAMBROK'S ELITE GUARD)

Nothing more satisfying than spears, regiments,
and none of that round base rubbish. Oh wait...

These were always intended to be a sort of Elite guard with their more uniform silhouette, and were completely new for this month. The banner was a total mix of stuff from the bobz box, the musician is an orc from ral partha with some appallingly sculpted goat legs, and the champion another pigman from Midlam Miniatures with some extensive conversion.

This unit also includes some more bob-xillaries of sorts. Weirdly these were from a series of ebay auctions of broken and mangled Bob Olley beastmen during lockdown - many of which were my first beastmen at the time. They lovingly got re-armed for battle, but again - not all got painted (this time).

We're beautiful again.

The Battle Standard! (THE GNARLED BANNER)

My arm is getting tired...

This was REALLY fun to do.

Again a Ral Partha Orc with some dodgily sculpted goat legs. The banner itself is from Ral Partha too, with a cocktail stick and a large blob of putty. I was really inspired by some of Nico's banners with the shields littered at the top - but felt that my monochrome approach to metal wouldn't really complement that approach - so a sort of vertical pile made a bit more sense.

This guy just can't stand up on his own - so when he's not magnetised into his movement tray he'll just need to wander around with a supporting metal plate.

I'll not miss sculpting goat legs.

Korag round 2! (KORAG THE DESTROYER)

Yes that IS a tiny bird on his helmet.

You may remember back in December I mentioned that there would be three Korags, sort of representing his progression as the army grows, but also a bit of a nod to the old AD&D hero packs.

Well this month we're on v2.

Again plundering the Ral Partha line - but this version got some proper Bob Legs. Probably the least challenging paint job given the scheme I'm working with - but he fits into the horde just fine. Next month we'll see v3.

Points...

We've got four bits to score up this month...

So all together 1138 points. Woof.

May done! Meaning just one final month left to tie up some loose ends and complete the centrepiece mega-chariot. It's passed oddly quickly, but I'd be lying if I said it's been easy.

The final countdown begins...
