Brendan's Wild Card (300 points)

She's Got Legs!

(and knows how to use them)

War Walkers have those nice long legs that go all the way up!!! I have always like the look of the War Walker's of the Eldar, so it was a lot of fun to build and paint one.  The only request I had from my friend was that it should have dual missile launchers, because he know how much I hate them...

The blue armor of the guardian blended in a lot with the vehicle so I added a little purple to make it look less mono color.

Ultimately I think it worked and I don't believe the pilot will be lost among the machine.  As I was wrapping it back up and putting it away my friends toolbox stuffed with packaging foam he savagely refers to as his "carrying case," I came across another unpainted War Walker!  I decided to paint this one too.  Not my best work, but it has paint on it, and it will look fine destroying my troops from across the table. Especially since I was only planning on painting one.

Lastly, and certainly using the "wildcard" status is the grav tank.  I don't think it was released in second edition, but I wanted to paint it, more so when I found it in an unopened box! A lot of hours went into edge highlighting this bad boy.

Very happy with this model, but I won't count it as I believe it is 3rd edition.  Now it is on to finding all the models I painted and taking a group pic!

Clever Title Wanted Here - Brendan's (300 points)

 Troops: 300 Points of Wraithguard

I like to have a catchy title to introduce my post, but sadly I was clueless with what to go with. So feel free to add something in the comments!

I don't have a lot of pictures for this month as the troop choices are all very similar.  My friend loved playing with Wraithguard and always played with a unit of 10. To my surprised he had an additional ten models. I don't know how I feel about potentially seeing 20 of these guys on the table, but now he can field a lot of these undead constructs!

10 models equals 300 points.  These guys are expensive points wise.

It was a lot of work to paint these guys up, they are a lot of model for something so skinny, but I'm happy with how they have come out.  On to next month!

Brendan - Hero Entry (50 points)

Just Like Bonnie Tyler, "I need a hero!"

"I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'till the end of the night
He's gotta be strong, and he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight
I need a hero"

I was initially just going to have one warlock be the hero for the competition, but I kind of find those models a bit dull. My friend had a bunch of the old Phoenix Lord models and I asked if I could paint those up for him too, because they are just amazing sculpts. So to get out of the way my compulsory HQ choice, here is my warlock entry for this month:

1 Warlock: 50 points, and totally boring.
Bonus Heroes
First up is a harlequin model. I don't know if he is 2nd edition or later so I'm not counting. plus I was too chicken to try and paint diamonds all over him so he should be disqualified anyways! :) Regardless, he came out looking nice.

I actually owned this Swooping Hawk Phoenix Lord when I was 14. I gave it to a friend who was playing Eldar, who then gave it to my friend whom army I am currently painting, so that is a weird circle of life situation. I just love how he came out:

The next Phoenix Lord is the Dire Avenger one. I thought the dire avengers were a bit dull, but the Phoenix lord one was pretty cool. I tried my best to represent the rainbow on the helmet crest to mixed results.

My absolute favorite has to be the Striking Scorpion Phoenix Lord. He just screams alpha predator to me and I loved painting every minute of him. I wouldn't want to meet him in a dark alley.

All those models completed and I'll just claim 50 points for the Warlock. But this was an enjoyable month to paint!

Brendan's March Eldar (316 points)

 Swoop! There it is!

I know it isn't the original lyrics, but that is all I could think about as I was painting.  Sorry, not sorry? The plan for March was to work on 5 Swooping Hawks for the rank and file.  However I needed more than 5 models to reach this goal so I added in the 8 Dire Avengers my friend had unloved and unpainted in the mix. Better to be over the ten model limit than under it!

I like how they came out.  I wanted a nice light angelic look to them.  I tried to stay mostly white with some light blues to reflect their domination of the skies.  I kept the guns the same color as the rest of the army as well to tie them in with the my friend's existing Eldar.

I have a love/hate relationship with these wings.  I used an airbrush on them to try and blend the blue hues together and it was semi successful.  You can see a little overspray but I did my best to clean it up.

I really like the Exarch of the group.  He kind of reminds me of a peacock.  Now that I think about it, I should have done the wings to be peacock wings.  Well, maybe next time I paint Swooping Hawks I will do that!

I still needed to add more models to this month's challenge so I also painted up Dire Avengers.

While I like them, they don't quite pop as much as the Swooping Hawk. I was keeping their colors close to the basic line troops of my friend's Eldar.

Looking at their helmet crest I can't help but think that they have all been chosen by house Gryffindor...

March is in the bag.  Time to reward myself with some character models for April!

Swooping Hawks: (140 points)
Dire Avengers: (176)

Prepare to be Struck by the Scorpions! Brendan (260 points)

Rank & File #2

Here I come with another month, but prepare to be struck not with a hurricane, but with Striking Scorpions.  Yes, I know I'm not supposed to use an opening picture other than my models, but I just can't help myself...

Continuing with squads this month I moved on to a unit that has been the bane of my imperial guard's existence.  Striking scorpions.  Sadly I have always had to face them in their ugly black undercoat, but now when I give them back to my friend they can crush me in their new green paint job!

These guys took a long time to paint and I forgot how much edge highlighting there are on these models.  I think a lot more than the Fire Dragons I did last month.  Still, I am very pleased with how they came out.

There were three different poses which was a bit refreshing from the fairly mono poses of the Fire Dragons.  You could even dare say these models are certainly "striking a pose."

The squad leader was fun to paint too.  I thought about painting the claw hand a different color but opted to keep it green.

Overall I am happy with the way they turn out.  Hopefully I won't cry too much when the models I painted have turned on me to kill my precious guardsmen.

Brendan's Super Hot Eldar (305 points)

Brendan's Fire Dragons to Warm Up January (305 points)

Rank and File month #1

I started this month off painting some fire dragons.  All I can say is that orange is really hard to paint!  I even thought I was being smart by base coating them all gray before I began.  Nope, still too dark.  After many light applications I was able to build up to a color that at least resembles orange-ish!

I then realized that I was out of yellow paint as I was planning on making the helmets that color.  Apparently nothing with this unit was going to plan.  I substituted gold instead and I think that it came out looking pretty good.  A happy accident if you will.

All the poses are pretty similar with this batch of ten, but they were still fun to paint.  I really enjoyed the exarch of the bunch as well and he is certainly ready to socially distance with that 6' fire pike.

This completes my first *troops* selection for the challenge.  9 Fire Dragons clock in at 252 points and an exarch is 50 points for a grand total of 302 points.  Wow those guys are pricey.  I'm happy to be part of #TeamEldar for this year's challenge!

Brendan's Eldar : An introduction

I’m back for my second go at the OWAC.  I had such a fun time painting my Skaven last year and being part of #teamskaven!  But this time I would try something different.

Eldar.  I hate Eldar.  They have been the bane of my gaming existence. They have outshot my Imperial Guard, they have out maneuvered my Tau, they have passed more invulnerable saves than my demons.  So why would I dare paint these foul xenos?  Because my good friend has soooo many of them!  He isn’t much of a painter, so I asked him if I could paint what he had.  Since we haven’t been gaming lately, he agreed.

At first, I was just going to melt them down out of spite, but then I decided to crack open the Codex and see what I could put together for 1000 points.

It turns out, with all his aspect warriors it would be fairly easy to reach 1000.  Especially with my friend’s absurd love of Wraithguard.  He already has ten painted, and I found ten more all undercoated!   So they made the list.  I found Dire Avengers and Striking Scorpions, Fire Dragons and a War Walker.  This could actually be fun.  Maybe I won’t melt them all down…

9 Fire Dragons (252)

10 Striking Scorpions (260)

War Walker (150)

Warlock (51)

8 Dire Avengers (176)

Dire Avenger Exarch (50)

10 Wraith guard (350)

And for our benevolent overlord my tribute:

Brendan's June Clan Moulder (30 points)

It's is Complete!

For the competition I really only had enough models owned or purchased for 1000 points, so I technically finished my army in May, however I went searching and painted up an agent from Clan Eshin to help surprise my enemies:

Skaven Assassin: 30 points

Grand total of my army came to 1089 points, and I'm happy with the way they came out!

Brendan's Skaven Post for Month 5! (192 points)

Clanrats Go!

I spent this month bulking out my Skaven clanrat unit.  11 more Skaven completed for a total of 92 points.

I would also like to thank Grame from this group as he showed and shared some Skaven banner outlines that he used and I liked!  So I made sure to copy what he did when I got around to my standard bearer for this unit.

Most of my work this month went into designing a movement tray for the models.  I started to slowly elevate the back rows so that I could safely put my fearless leader behind where all the action was taking place like a proper Skaven general.

And here you can see what they look like when they are coming after you!

I made a custom stand for my general in case he left the safety of the clan rats.

And here is is sitting up on his hill:

I then remembered I needed more points, so I painted another rat swarm to continue with the Clan Moulder Theme (100 points).

And finally about 1000 points of my army so far!  It was a lot of fun to take them all out for a photo shoot!
