Ben's Epic Orks Month 3 - Leader

This month I've gone painted models to to represent an Evil Sunz Warboss and his Battlewagons.   The meganobz and mekboyz are leaders from Vanguard, with a couple of spare plastic Painboyz and Gretchin to keep them running.  I've used a Bonebreaka and a Gutrippa for their battlewagons, as I much prefer these models to the plastic wagons

Here's the boss zoomed in a bit to see the highlights and detail I tried to add...

...but going into super-zoom mode you can see detail in the whole mob:

Of course, these are my 40k lads - painted over a period of many, many years - that the Epic Evil Sunz are inspired by.  Next month, I want to paint a Kult of Speed (Epic scale...) to go with them.

MAY...Tom's Space Orks (R&F month 4 of 4) (177 points)

This month is the month I have kinda planed for.
Every OWAC month previously I have painted a vehicle and now this month sees them posted, and me grabbing a sneaky few weeks rest to recharge the painting mojo :)
For this reason I've switched this month back to a Rank and File month, and save my Wildcard for the finale :)

Anyhow, wasting no more time, here's a fabulous Scorcha!

I'm very pleased I've managed to paint this beast 👆, it's a very long vehicle! The wartrak is pinned to the base, and so are the wheels of the towed fuel tank, hopefully negating the need to pin these two parts together. To do this I glued the wartrak to the base, and then drilled and added the pins AFTER. Same with the fuel tank. The only thing I regret not doing, is that I haven't pinned the little grot on the back in place. He's already fallen offf multiple times...

Following the scorcha, here are three war buggies:

Buggy with multi melta.

Initially I started painting these with a red chassis, but after a month or so of no painting action, I re-painted it black and added the metallic vibe. Progress was a lot quicker and more enjoyable after that switcharoo!

Like the scorcha, all these buggies are pinned via their wheels to the base. I think some of the gunners are pinned into the chassis, all of the heavy weapons are pinned into their mountings, and I think two of the drivers are pinned into their chair -  this was done by lightly gluing them first and then drilling up through the chassis into the drivers rear, and the gunners foot. Pins put in place, and then they are re-glued into position after painting.

This buggy sports a white panel, which has obviously been 'borrowed' from elsewhere. At least that's what I tell myself - I've no idea why I painted it white, it just kinda 'fit'.

Buggy with Heavy Plasma

This buggy was the first one I completed painting.
(It was painted all red, with an aim for the others to follow suite, but in the end I switched up their colouration for that variation yo).

Buggy with Twin Heavy Boltas.

This buggy I will not claim points for as the vehicle had a basecoat of red before starting the challenge (it was a model just started and then left at the end of last years OWAC, and as such was a bit of a painting sticking point for me, having been looking at it for nearly the best part of a year! Although the red had been undercoated, this was the last of these vehicles that I completed, but I think it might well be my favourite now).

The crew were blank though, and I will claim the two 2 model count for painting them please!

Battlewagon!

This lovely model is produced by Ramshackle Games - sold as a Boom Wagon, but visually based on the Epic scale Spleenrippa.

I'll count this as an EXTRA (so no points).

Robot

Back in the day, orks (specifically bloodaxe's, if my memory serves correctly) could purchase/requisition Imperial Robots (the one pictured here most likely representing the Katafrakt variant with its flamer, lascannon and bolta), but any Mek worth their salt could make their own robots - up to four - for remote control use.
Unfortunately the models that represent the wonders that are the tinbots, are way too expensive for me but I still keep a weather eye out!

This Imperial one though was available through Satyr Studios for a short time at least, and I was very fortunate to pick one up later through Jason Lye and his lovely store at ye_alchemist.

I could use this as a stand in dreadnaught too I guess, but for now it goes in the EXTRA pile, so nil point.

And now to round up the figure count I painted this Ork Musician.
After painting, I kinda think that his 'drum' is a Space Marine helmet?
Anyhow, this model is a fan sculpt of Braglub - pictured here, courtesy of solegends. Also leadplague has posted about him on their blog. Check out their AWESOME RT Ork army. It is magnifique.

Also this grot will boost the grot numbers up to five so far. Technically I suppose this particular runt is an assistant, but he'll be used here as a regular piece of cannon fodder:

50...Skorcha
50...Buggy with Heavy Plasma
FREE...Buggy with Twin Heavy Boltas (already basecoated, so no points)
65...Buggy with Multimelta
FREE...Battlewagon (I am costing this as an EXTRA)
FREE...Robot (Also costed as an EXTRA)
12...Ork
5...Runt
Total: 177

Tom's Bad Moon Orks (205 points)

Leader Month

Check out this header pic! I think it's great (but then, I guess I would 😂 ). It includes the largest model I've ever painted, and four banners - hastily painted at the last minute. I hate painting banners, and I'm not a massive fan of painting large models, especially vehicles so this is an epic month!

Well April, I see you and  thankfully I've completed my leader month!
Diving straight in, here's my leader. The Big Boss. The Head Honcho. Ork #1.

(Well actually - first off here's his Bodyguard. They wouldn't be doing their job if they didn't go first)

And now, a raw pic of the birth of my Warlord:

Note please The Claw.
From the Commissar Yarrick model, as is the backpack and banner pole.
I switched out the skull on top of the pole for something a bit more fitting...although in hindsight I think the helmet on the pole would be better painted red, maybe with a white stripe.

These following photos are kinda the best I could take with my one painting light and camera phone in the night-time, but at least it gives a good idea

Here he is with his bodyguard and attack squigs....

I have to note that the warlords banner was inspired by Joshua Van Z's amazing Bad Moon army - check them out over here: INSTA

And no aspiring ork warlord of any note wouldn't be seen not dead in no battlewagon.

Hmm.

I painted a Battlewagon.

This was a lucky opportunity afforded to me by stand up guy Andy Grant, who offered this great model up for £60. Oueff ! Pricy! But also, in this day and age, kinda reasonable...
...and definitely a sign for my growing WAAAAGH to obtain one.

Here is the sales post pic. As you can see Andy's got good taste when it comes to Ork clans!

Undercoated.
Had to twist off the wheel.
Later I pinned it back on :)
The banner pole is stuck on with plastic glue, and the join is surprisingly strong! Horribly I dropped the whole thing and re-broke the mast and several of the railing spikes 😬

I added some (terrible) graffiti - my painting buddies get a shout out, as does Andy:

I also asked the #teameldar crew what colours their most precious spirit stones were. Red, blue and purple came out tops. My ork warlord had the wonderful idea of bedecking his battlewagon with the spirit stones - he noticed that the more explosive and indiscriminate gunfire from the Eldar avoided the wagon because of this. Wot a kunnin' boi!

And here it is with last minute banners attached:

EXTRAS!

Here's a timestamp for models that I've, ahem, acquired and definitely not brought at vast expense... Definitely.

In fact, actually the Weirdboy and the Grots are from that model swap last month with Instagram dude Dave aka grinningloon. Many thank you's again!

(The battlewagon is the one you've already seen 😀 )

Runtherd! Weirdboy!

So... What a warlord needs is a retinue.
I was going to put the Bad Dok and Bad Mek that I painted last month in here, but when they were painted they called out for their own division and I couldn't not post them that month: I enjoyed them so much :)

Anyhow, this Runtherd is painted in Bad Ork colours with the stripey trousers, and he will join the bad orks laters - but for now, he's the warlords own!

On a personal note, I really enjoyed painting this guy. I really like how his face came out. I also like how he's the opposite of the other runtherd - here's a side by side:

Anuvva Runtherd.
This guy truly is a freebooting bad ork, what with his bionik hook hand and all. I had meant to include him in next months submission, but for some reason I see he made his way into the group shot, which I am loathe to re-take!
I like his devoted Snotling hanging on to his leg.

Fingers crossed, I might be able to paint a few more of these in the coming months to complete the runtherd collection. Well, at least that's the plan!

On to the Weirdboy:

I like him and his fancy red boots.

Gretchin:
Immaculately trained by aforementioned runtherd, this little blighter is the self appointed MVP, so it's only right he appears here in Leader Month.
He's available from Knightmare Miniatures, and their range of space goblins fit in well with the RT orks:)
Hopefully, other grots will follow next month. I've a feeling the Knightmare range will be counted as Super Gretchin or Warlord Retainer models, depending on how many I get painted. And the Rogue Trader ones as regular grots!

So, I think that's it for this month.

Unfortunately I didn't get as much as I wanted done - a return to work and those household chores scuppered quite a few painting opportunities. I will have to get used to getting up much earlier and painting before work again!

Cheers, and hopefully see you next month for a wildcard month.
