George's Bad Moons - introduction post

Big Gobb was an ork warlord with one major skill: talking, or shouting, about how great he was.

The son of a hugely successful Bad Moon Warlord, Big Gobb had inherited a large and proud mob with a reputation for brutal conquest that strethced across the galaxies.

Big Gob was certainly big. And he was certainly good at talking about his father's triumphs. But he was lacking any success of his own to back it up.

After some failed campaigns his mob had begun to drift apart. Households who had been close allies to his father went elsewhere and Big Gobb had the uncomfortable feeling that even his closest nobz were grumbling about him.

It was time for him to pull off something big. Something fitting of his heritage. He was going to conquer a squat stronghold. Kill all the dwarfs. Steal their treasure. And then shout about it. Shout about it across the universe until his legacy was assured.

Now all he needed was a warband...

When I first fell in love with 40k as a kid, I was pretty dismissive about orks. As a colletor or squats and imperial guard, I thought they were the enemy and to be avoided at all costs. In more recent years, I realised that they are actually huge fun to paint with enormous potential for fluff writing - win!

So I decided to paint up a warband to fight it out with my squat army from OWAC VI.

I do love bright colours, so I'm going for Bad Moons. I also like the fact that the Bad Moons have so many oddboyz - more bright colours!

Working from the Freebooterz and Waaargh The Orks books, I'm planning an army full of weird colour and character. Models are assembled from original 80s/90s GW miniatures, Ramshackle games, CP Models, Knightmare Miniatures and Wargames Foundry.

As with the previous challenge, I have plenty of real life things going on that make this mad idea. But let's do it anyway!

Planned army list:

Warlord: 90 points

Warlord's retinue: 290 points (5 x nobz @ 125 points, each, 1 x painboy @ 15 points, 1 x shokk attack gun @ 50 points, 2 x weird boyz @ 100 points)

Big mob: 130 points (10 x boyz, 1 x rocket launcher)

Boyz mobs: 100 points (2 x mobz @ 50 points each)

Gretchin mob: 50 points

Wild mob: 40 points

Mad mob: 50 points

Battlewagon: 50 points

Tinboy: 75 points

Freebooterz: 75 points

Mekaniak: 15 points

Weirdboy: 50 points

Painboy: 15 points

The first gathering of the warband. Still awaiting stripping, prep and priming.
And a few last minutes purchases!

PaulD's final presentation of what I daubed paint over this Spring for the Old World army Challenge

Here's a few pictures of my meager efforts of applying paint to a few miniatures as part of the Old World Army Challenge to provide me with additions to my amazonian army, which didn't get off to particularly good start, as I was originally painting lizardmen!

Check out the early posts for details of how I got here.  I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I did?

Paul / Golgfag1

PS. Thanks to all the others who took part, seeing your efforts, encourged me to do more than I intended, especially to Mr Iannick for all the boring admin stuff.

Paul D's wild-card with a few odds and sods, making up the numbers for 1287points

Hard to believe that during month one I was worried about making the points target. Then I realised - participants were painting more than the minimum per month and others said I could carry stuff over, if, I didn't get them finished. Hence, here a few 'C' series Amazons which came out of their Dettol bath at the beginning of May, but I couldn't finish, as I didn't have any bases for them to join their sisters.

As mentioned on the facebook page, I ordered a few more cat-riders via ebay to make up their numbers, only to be told they wouldn't arrive  until the end of June. So, I painted up those I had and moved on to something else.

And as soon as their finished, the others turn up early!

But, after I started painting Elves, from Foundry and other manufacturers, typical.

So here's the elf contingent, which will be my entry for this final month, having just received their first coat of varnish.

Next up, the new cat riders have a dab of paint

I've a few days to paint a few more figures, but I really need to start putting my 'new' stuff together for BOYL 2021, so I'm going to quit while I'm ahead, with a little hors d'oeuvre for my ogre cooks! Enjoy.

This months contingent all together, based and varnished, hope to see all your efforts in July.

Six cat riders with all the trimmings forty eight points each - two hundred and eighty eight points.

Four cats with their beastmaster - one hundred and eighty six points.

Ten Elvish Wardancers at twenty points each - two hundred points

One level five novice at sixty points

one Shar-woman at level two, eighty five points

One level three Wizard, one hundred and fifty five points

One powersword swinging drug induced nutter - two hundred and sixty six points.

One guardwoman at nineteen points

Four tribeswomen at seven points each - twenty eight points.

Now, how do I get this army shot for July?

Sam’s 2nd Ed. Catachans – Danger Fist! (229pts)

All you need to know about this month is that I started painting on Saturday afternoon. Saturday 29th of May that is!!!! We made it though, the struggle continues.

Fortunately, considering the above, I had planned into my leader month this month. However, being Imperial Guard it is still a squad anyway, so it was only a few less models to tackle.

The List (Leader)

Command Squad – 179pts

·         Colonel, Comm- link, Battle Standard, Flamer x 2

Commissar with P.Fist – 50pts

Sammy 'Danger Fist' Balboa

Some of these sculpts are absolute bangers. The Colonel and the Comm-link are great, and the Commissar is probably one of the finest sculpts GW have ever produced.

The battle standard is a conversion. They never made 2nd Ed. battle standard sculpts, so this is a spare lascannon loader with a 3rd Ed. plastic banner spliced on.

For the last month I have a bit of a points discrepancy to make up. So, the plan is a regular squad, a heavy weapons squad, and a sentinel. That way all the rank-and-file models are painted during the challenge, and I can just add the tanks at a later date when I want to push the force to 1500-2000pts to take on those colourful Nids.

Anyway bring on the last month. Good luck to all, I’m looking forwards to catching up on the entries

Peace out

Samuel

Paul D/ Golgfag1's April's contingent - Heroes and Wizards (1186 points)

March found me with plenty of time on my hands to plough on with my efforts to give Mr Beales a run for his money, all due to Covid19, inclement weather and having to take holiday entitlement - found me completing my initial intentions, thus I posted a good week in advance of the end of the month.  Following the March post and a little light hearted banter between myself and Mr Beale, I decided rather than take a break over April, I'd push on with the next contingent of wizards and Heroes and then go off and do something else.

First up, a Colossal Lord lord from Grenadier  Miniatures  - Cassandra https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~tpope/sol/grenadier/images/3304.jpg

I wasn't sure on the colour schemce so plumbed for classic Wonder woman, be it Linda Carter or Gal Gadot - red, white and blue, where I could, with bronze armour (vambrace and pauldrons) and a chainlink hauberk. I apologies now - the miniature is from a time when attitudes were different, but I'm not a revisionist and accept it for what it is.

Quite happy with the way she turned out, will be using her as a giantess for a steady two hundred points.

Next up a few low level wizards, Original Citadel C series Sisterhood novices/Initates, classing these as Warhammer third edition, level fives' at sixty points each - for three hundred points.

Next up a Sisterhood Mage, I'll class her as a level fifteen wizard for one hundred and fifty five points.

The mother Samatha figure's rather nice, so I'll run for another level fifteen wizard for another one hundred and fifty five points.

I've also dabbed a little paint over four nobles, I don't have enough of these to form a regiment so will be using them as champions for my other units at thirty points each, giving me another hundred and twenty points.

Last, but by no means least, the Goddess Rigg, now I'll be honest I consider this figure the worst of the C series Amazonian figures and thus I'm not inclined to use it as such, so am simply going to class it as a female ogre champion, for a minimal two and fifty six points (I intend to expand this idea latter in the challenge, with a contingent of female ogres!).

Finally a group shot all varnished and based to match the previous months contingents.

Next month - cavalry and beasties

Mike's Mighty Dwarven Throng of Karak Blargh Conclusion

Hooray the challenge has ended with much completed dwarfiness! I am quite happy with the results of this years challenge since for the first time I have painted more points wise than I had planned. I started with my choices based on a 1750pt army list and what models I had available.

Dwarf General with 2 handed weapon (runes of striking and fury), heavy armor (master rune of adamant and rune of stone) 258pts

Battle Standard with hand weapon, heavy armor and shield. Banner with rune of battle 127pts

Champion with hammer (master rune of flight and rune of might, heavy armor and shield (runes of iron and stone) 309pts

10 long beards with standard and musician 180pts

16 warriors standard and musician 208pts

10 crossbows with standard and musician, light armor and shield 180pts

8 miners with standard and musician 130pts

1 flame cannon (rune of disguise) 144pts

4 allied imperial ogres with light armor and 2 handed weapons 176pts

In addition since I was being so incredibly productive I also managed to add to my list

Dwarf Baggage Train

Runelord and Anvil of Doom

Additional Heroes and a Giantish Ogre

With all this I'd love to say I'm done with having unpainted dwarves, but of course since January I have purchased enough marauder dwarves to make sure I have every unit that I could easily do another challenge. I have even gotten in several games with this list and I have learned the keys to victory is to burninate with the flame cannon everything a ogre and lord can't crush. Here is the completed army less the ogres which I forgot about when I took the picture.

 All hail the OWAC champions!
