Tom's Orcs and Goblins: War Machines (Rank and File #4)

The month of war machines. Usually something I dread painting, but all the crew (or 

ammo - in the case of the Doom Divers) are fantastic and they certainly helped with the motivations!

I'm aware that each catapult should have, or at least I'm sure it came with - two crew. But they're a little tricky to find on eBay with two crew, so only one brave little blighter for each catapult I'm afraid...

Here's his mate. I went for a yellowy spike this time round - I think I prefer it! This fellow came attached to his catapult. The previous owner drilled a pin into the body and sharpened it to a needle like point, and then must've pressed it into the back of the 'pult with plenty of resin glue for good measure. Anyway, dettol is a wonderful thing for stripping all kinds of things! 

I couldn't get the needle point out though, so that's still there. Fortunately it looks like goblin decoration, and it's really hard to spot.

I did struggle a little in trying to match the brightness of the last one - especially on the back of the wings 👇

On to the big dread - the rock lobba! I made a little base out of some 3mm MDF board, and made the smallest of protruding pins in each of the wheels. Every little counts! 

The counterweight and throwing arm are glued in to position, although I don't hold out much hope of that remaining the case for long...

It's mostly a drybrush over a solid basecoat, then a very watered down wash of contrast red (I think Flesh Tearers), and Wildwood. Some light blacklining, and then a light touch with some brushed on highlights.

 

Something special about this orc sculpt 👇 - he really does stand out. Maybe he was meant for rank and file?

Found a stash of shields, so I really should add one to my Goblin leader....

I went for white as the freehand colour. For some reason, the usual black did not appeal.

This guys gotta be second in command. He's got a hammer. 👇

Maybe he stepped a little bit too far over the line, as he is sporting a black eye (or an errant splodge of paint that I highlighted, rather than try and cover up!)

And this guy must be on one of the lowest rungs of orc society - just hoistin' rocks👇

And a lovely rock lobba group shot. I'm super please with how they've come out! 

Mostly as I very much remember assembling and painting these as a kid, and making a right pigs ear of it 😂

Then, to make up numbers, I've painted these lil' squishies 🙂

They were initially lightly glued, two to a base. Then painted. 

After painting, I snap them off the painting base and then trimmed the bottom of them with a sharp knife, so that is easier to hide the model base with sand. You might be able to tell the first one I did  where I didn't do that if you look close.

Fortunately, I have now painted everything that was on my original OWAC army list in the intro post (link below), so it's only EXTRAS left.

Hopefully I'll have at least painted a few more black orcs and maybe another base of snotlings by then too...

*actual lies. I managed to paint these in previous months and they are my safety net. I'm really struggling with the black orcs, and haven't picked up my brush for orcs in nearly over five weeks...Thank Mork - or Gork, for painting ahead!

 Wild Card Month

"Oi, you lot know wot we fergot ta pack? Tha bleedin' catty-pult! How's we s'posed ta be firin' a Stone Thrower if we's ain't got one?"

"Not ter worry, Boss - them gobbos got somefink over there we can borrow!"

"That's one a them newfangled Doom Divers, it can't be a stone thrower! No stones!"

"Gobbos is about as smart as stones though, right Boss?"

"Ya might be on ta somefink there..."

Somehow not as productive a month as I'd hoped for but nonetheless, no Field of Bones for me yet. For my Wild Card month, I present the very first piece of artillery I've ever built and painted. To me, this is a 6th Edition Doom Diver because that was the current edition when I entered the hobby and I remember reading about and loving the Doom Diver Catapult at the time, but I believe this model was first released in 5th edition - don't quote me, and if I'm wrong, please correct me. This also marks the very first official Games Workshop-produced Warhammer Fantasy Battles Orc & Goblin miniatures that I've painted for this army (and the goblins aren't sculpted by Kev Adams, I don't think, but I'll allow myself an exception here).

But wait! The Doom Diver does not exist in 3rd Edition WHFB, the edition I've been using for the OWAC. So, with the addition of three Orc crewmen from Warmonger Miniatures, it becomes an amusing proxy for an Orc Stone Thrower, on the principle enumerated above that "gobbos is about as smart as stones."

I might still go back in and letter "ACME" in big letters on the frame, because it reminds me so strongly of Wile E. Coyote and his endless, futile pursuit of the Roadrunner.

The high-flying (or at least, far-flung) Goblin will make a nice marker for where I'm targeting on the table.

And finally this month, I have my Battle Standard Bearer, Bogloaf Gunderstank, a Level 15 Orc Hero who can't keep from smiling at the fact that he's lucked into the cushy job of carrying this big stick around while everyone else gets trampled by horses or shot full of holes. Not the Army Standard I initially wanted, but Warmonger is retooling the mold of the other standard bearer I ordered (which is topped by a captive dwarf whose testicles are being played like a cowbell by a sadistic goblin) and I'm still awaiting shipment on that, but this will serve perfectly well in the interim.

So this month's points work out to:

For an April total of 180.5 points, and a total score four months into the OWAC of 837.5 points. As of this writing my February points are still being counted twice on the scoreboard but I know Iannick's getting that sorted for me :)

So I came close to missing the dealine! The shame of not finishing, me the Challenge Founder? Let's just say my pride made me work overtime the last few days!

So the first part of my November entry is a regiment of  19 Forest Goblin archers, led by Noraz Stickblast, a Goblin Big Boss.

I must admit painting these fellows in a month has been a challenge; first because work has been very busy, and also because I didn't expect these guys to take that long! I mean, they're small, so they should paint faster, right? WRONG. I never noticed the insane amount of details goblin master Kev Adams had sculpted on these little fellow. Skulls, spiders, ear rings, bones, feathers, etc. He even sculpted them nails! These are not your typical clad in black night goblins. And at a mere 2.5 pts each, it probably makes them the worst deal in Warhammer history when it comes to bang for your painting time! 

But boy, do they look great once finished. The Kev Adams 4th edition gobbos are (by far) my favourite goblins, I love their look of mischief rather than pure evil. They are exactly how I envision Goblins.
