Tom's Orcs and Goblins: Rank and File #3

April! On to the main muscle of the army - the regiment of orc boys.

I very much enjoyed working on these, and the reminisce from 'back in the day' was super strong.
I am again, very pleased with how they've come out and also how bright they are on the table. I've been gifted a few  LOADS more monopose orcs from a local gaming club. Many thank you's go to Phil from Carmarthen Old Guard (instagram), so I really should paint a few more!
I'd really like to do a 'start to finish' guide for one of these boyz by the end of the Challenge...

Anyway - on to the pics:

And a close up in threes. I just added the champ in here to make up the numbers :) He's got his own pic below...

And on to the iconic command!

The drummer:

The standard bearer. Again, I might add a checked streamer later...

And finally, the Champ. He's a chunk of metal, make no mistake about that!

I also have painted up the orc archers, which I surprisingly enjoyed as well! Originally these were not on the planned list, but I very much HAD  TO  PAINT  THEM!
I think I have simplified the paint application a bit through the regular boys, and when it came to these I found them a lot easier.

And then as a final thing, I painted a test model for the black orcs I have planned for the final month.

He started off covered in balck and white checks, but I thought it would take way too long. It was also very hard - I did the checks way too small and was too demotivated to redo them, so settled on red with white dags. I still think a flame motif on the upraised wrist guard would be kinda cool, or a faded checkerboard on the sword...
I've painted up a few more now, and simplified the paint a bit - especially the skin. This tester model's skin is a lot richer than the more recent ones, but it took AGES 😂😭 Fingers crossed I'll manage a whole unit, but right now I'm really struggling with 11 black orcs left to paint...I keep painting single space marines 😬

Anyhow.

  1. Beautiful work mate. They could be the box art. I particularly love the Blanchesque paintjob on the champion's shield.

I'm likely painting a similar army next year, so I'm also very relieved you've gone first and I don't have to compete with your attention to detail on the glyphs, patterns, and textures. Top stuff :)

    1. Ah, thank you! The shield is heavily inspired by Jaakko's wonderful shields from last month. I'll be looking forward to your take on the O&G's next year!

    1. Cheers George! Moot Green is a wonderful colour for the orc skin (shout out to Louise Sudgen for that!)

  3. What a fantastic month once again! You’ve struck a great balance between quality and quantity. The units are a good size and look impressive. The Black Orc you’ve already painted looks amazing, and I’m really looking forward to seeing the rest of the unit!
