Ian's Goblin Army (part II) - OWAC IX - February : Rank and File #2

I was a bit less motivated in February to paint another batch of 10 more Goblin Wolf Riders.

Next month should be better. I have a week of vacation at the beginning of March and I hope to get the next 10 done during that time. That will leave me 3 weeks to get a head start for April or just to add some extras.

So here's the army so far :

Byron's invasion of Ulthuan - landing party (359 pts)

 The invasion of Ulthuan begins!

Grom sends Boss Scraggit and his lot to explore up the coast while the main army continues to unload on the beach.

The first unit pondering up the coast is a chariot (86 pts)

Next, Scraggit sent two trolls (130 pts) to check things out.  They didn't make it very far and stopped to check if the rocks tasted different on Ulthuan.

Assuming the path was now safe-ish, Scraggit (16 pts) led his mob (42 pts) along the beach to check things out for himself.

The goblins with bows (30 pts), who naturally like to put some distance between themselves and the enemy, lagged behind.

Finally, Scraggit had the wolf riders (55 pts) explore the valley near the coast.

Little boss Scraggit then brought his lot together and tried to march them up the coast, in column, to find the enemy.

Somehow the enemy found him first and his column was ambushed by shore riders and archers!

Finally, Progress on the shelf. I tightly packed all the newly painted goblins on the shelf. I am well on my way to filling out the whole shelf by the end of OWAC 9.

Ian's Goblin Army (part II) - OWAC IX - January : Rank and File #1

January is a good month for me to start painting for the challenge. I'm still on vacation for a few days at the beginning of the month and can get a lot of work done on those days.

I have 40 Goblin Wolf Riders to paint for this OWAC edition... I chose to keep the metal wolves and the smallest Goblins for last. So I started with the classic Games Workshop plastic wolves with Knightmare miniatures as goblins wolf riders. Those goblins are absolutely awesome and so much fun to paint! Not overwhelmed with small details and full of character.

I'm very happy and quite proud of my work. Each wolf has a slightly unique fur pattern, each goblin is different with some colours reminder on different accessories or parts to unify the unit. For the shields, I cut some 5th edition plastic goblin faces and glued them on the shields. After painting them, I wasn't quite  satisfied with the result and decided to add some sort of vine flocking above the head. I think it gives a kind of savage folk horror vibe and, again, a uniqueness to each model. I imagined those goblins cutting themselves the faces of their fallen camarades and stuck them on their shield as an honour and a way to cause fear in the heart of their ennemies.

I also took some time to learn how to upgrade my photo skills a bit and applied a few simple techniques to get much better results. So here are a few group shots and then all 10 different goblins showed on each side. Tell me which one is your favourite!

Ian's Goblin Army (part II) - OWAC IX - Intro post

Greetings from the cold city of Montreal, Canada. This will be my fifth OWAC and the goal is to increase my ever expanding Goblin army. The plan is quite simple.

January : 10 Goblin Wolf Riders (Rank & File - 140 points)

February : 10 Goblin Wolf Riders (Rank & File - 140 points)

March : 10 Goblin Wolf Riders (Rank & File - 140 points)

April : 10 Goblin Wolf Riders (Rank & File - 140 points)

May : 5 Doom Diver Catapults (Wild card - 500 points)

June : Leader month and extras (Leader - 205 points if I choose to paint Skarsnik and Gobbla, 195 points for 3 Trolls)

OWAC IX

11 different wolves, a lot in metal, a lot of size difference !

Those are all extras. I might choose a leader on wolf instead of Skarsnik and Gobbla.

Goblins from different eras and size ! Knightmare miniatures on the far right.

The OWAC IX theme is about finding an old school artwork and building an army around it. I did the opposite. I knew I wanted to painted all the remaining Goblin Wolf Riders I had in my pile of shame before starting to look for an inspiring artwork. I found this one by doing a Google search and knew I saw it somewhere... I bought the Death on the Reik scenario for the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying Game way back around 1989. I always dreamed of playing it and read it entirely multiple times. I loved the depth of the story, all the weird encounters, the old school art... But I never had the chance to have a group to play it. I sold it a few years ago after keeping it for more than 30 years and immediately regret it.

Here are my previous participations :

OWAC V : Goblins

OWAC VI : Mordheim

OWAC VII : Undead (DNF)

OWAC VIII : Undead

Have a wonderful year and good luck to all the OWAC IX participants !

Ian
