February - the shortest month. What a time to push on and do....
The other unit I was dreading - the night goblin archers! In the end, the only thing that's been saving me throughout the batch paint has been the singular thought that once it's done, I never have to do it again...
Anyway, I did do a few testers for this unit, although frustratingly I didn't take any pictures except this one👇
The one on the left is using Black Stallion by GreenStuffWorld, and the one on the right is by using two coats of Citadel Black Templar contrast paint. I preferred the bluer, deeper tone of the contrast paint, so deep breath and begin the batch paint!
For future reference, here again is a breakdown of paints used:
PA = ProAcryl
VMC = Vallejo Model Colour
C = Citadel
AK = Ak Interactive
Skin: C Moot Green, C Warp Lightning, PA Bismuth Yellow, PA Bright Ivory, C Leviathan Purple
Black: C Black Templar, PA Bright Ivory, AK Glaze Medium
Brown: PA Dark Orange Brown, C Fireslayer Flesh, PA Bright Ivory
Red: PA Orange Red, AK Volcanic Yellow, sometimes added PA Bright Ivory
Yellow: AK Volcanic Yellow, C Iyanden Yellow, PA Bismuth Yellow, AK Bright Ivory
Arrow shafts: C Wildwood, PA Bright Ivory
Metals: V Metallic Black, VMC Silver
Grass: AK Grass Green, PA Bismuth Yellow, PA Bright Ivory
Base rim; C XV-88
Varnished with two coats, brush-on, of Vallejo Premium Colour Satin.
The black is a single layer of contrast Black Templar, highlighted up twice by adding the ProAcryl Bright Ivory, then rewashed with a watered down Black Templar and a touch of glaze medium as i thought that would help. Finally rehighlighted. Phew!
In retrospect, I think that there was no need to highlight in-between washes, and I should have just saved the all highlighting for last...
There is a small edge of strapping, peeking out from the right of the arrow flights, which I chose to ignore in favour of ease.
And here they all are together! No champion, but a banner and musician.
I feel that I could freehand a symbol on the ...uh... cymbal, so I might do that before the end of the challenge if motivation strikes!
The banner bearer. Well, more of an Icon Bearer I guess! There's a very slim chance I might add a streamer to the banner pole later. I'm thinking just black and white checks, with a very simple yellow moon motif, or just banding, towards the banner pole at the moment.
And what self respecting night goblin unit is ever fielded without a fanatic or three hidden in the ranks?
This one's got a beandy chain. I'm very fortunate that it's not broken off as I'd have no idea how to fix it. I've a few in the box which are missing their - ahem - balls, so if you have any advice, please let me know! The slight bluish tint to the metal ball is due to a watered down wash of Black Templar.
I like this one. You can see that I've painted the shoes black, when really I think red would have been a better colour!
Here's the duplicate one. I've given him dags instead of checks...
And that's it for this month. I'm feeling super relieved that the two units that I really wasn't looking forward to painting are now finished, and I can move onto the much bigger orcs. Hopefully the motivation holds for them!!!
Here's the round up:

You have managed to make those old monopose models really pop, great work!
ReplyDeleteAlso good to see someone else sharing my pain of painting goblins.
What a cluster of rascals! The skin tones really pop from those funky old hoods, as do the occasional red booties. Great job!
