Benjamin's Double Beastmen Special 🐑 - THE ARMY OF KORAG - Rank and File Month IV (1138pts)

Horns aplenty

Well well well. Here we are again. And despite all my efforts - I'm writing this on the last day of the month! But this time it's the slightly less manic time of 10.30 11.30(ish). The month didn't go as planned and as usual this whole project's ambition seemed to have collapsed under the weight of its own hubris...

However - with 50 furry brutes finished I can't complain! It's also just occurred to me that I have now painted ALL of Bob's original beastmen, which in itself feels like a bit of a personal milestone.

So what was the plan?

Well originally this was going to be all about the spooky magical stuff. A shaman, the chaos shrine - possibly even some undead Beastmen... this was ALSO going to be coupled with finishing all of my outstanding infantry (February's Pestigor blob especially). The converting on the shrine alone was going to be a hefty job - so I really needed to simplify the workload into a more painting-focussed month.

See you next month...

With that infantry month in mind I thought - well, why not make the units a bit bigger? The pestigors were 36 strong, why not bump them to 40? And the spearmen got a bump thanks to a flutter on ebay and the darker arts of press moulding. Well batch painting two units of 40 really crushed my attention span, so I had to downsize the operation to keep up interest. We have the more bijou result of two 24 strong units.

See you next YEAR...

Anyway, that's the apologies out of the way - what DID we do?

The Pestigors! (GROB'S HORDE)

Honestly painted, warts and all.

Finally finished(ish)! I got these through base layers and an initial wash back in February.

In my little story these represent a big horde of beastmen who have toiled away in the mines for a bit too long - and all look a bit decrepit. The warts and spots were quite a fun addition of the Tzaangors back in January that give them a little boost visually.

The banner is a converted pigman from Midlam Miniatures, and the drummer is an Essex Dwarf with a pig head - which itself was sourced from a Ral Partha pigman which made the champion. A full head-and-body carousel.

This unit also includes some of my bob-xillaries. Miscellaneous Bob Olley models and conversions to fill the ranks. Not all of them got painted sadly - but the ones that did were some of my favourites.

Darwin would be so pleased.

The Spearmen! (RAMBROK'S ELITE GUARD)

Nothing more satisfying than spears, regiments,
and none of that round base rubbish. Oh wait...

These were always intended to be a sort of Elite guard with their more uniform silhouette, and were completely new for this month. The banner was a total mix of stuff from the bobz box, the musician is an orc from ral partha with some appallingly sculpted goat legs, and the champion another pigman from Midlam Miniatures with some extensive conversion.

This unit also includes some more bob-xillaries of sorts. Weirdly these were from a series of ebay auctions of broken and mangled Bob Olley beastmen during lockdown - many of which were my first beastmen at the time. They lovingly got re-armed for battle, but again - not all got painted (this time).

We're beautiful again.

The Battle Standard! (THE GNARLED BANNER)

My arm is getting tired...

This was REALLY fun to do.

Again a Ral Partha Orc with some dodgily sculpted goat legs. The banner itself is from Ral Partha too, with a cocktail stick and a large blob of putty. I was really inspired by some of Nico's banners with the shields littered at the top - but felt that my monochrome approach to metal wouldn't really complement that approach - so a sort of vertical pile made a bit more sense.

This guy just can't stand up on his own - so when he's not magnetised into his movement tray he'll just need to wander around with a supporting metal plate.

I'll not miss sculpting goat legs.

Korag round 2! (KORAG THE DESTROYER)

Yes that IS a tiny bird on his helmet.

You may remember back in December I mentioned that there would be three Korags, sort of representing his progression as the army grows, but also a bit of a nod to the old AD&D hero packs.

Well this month we're on v2.

Again plundering the Ral Partha line - but this version got some proper Bob Legs. Probably the least challenging paint job given the scheme I'm working with - but he fits into the horde just fine. Next month we'll see v3.

Points...

We've got four bits to score up this month...

So all together 1138 points. Woof.

May done! Meaning just one final month left to tie up some loose ends and complete the centrepiece mega-chariot. It's passed oddly quickly, but I'd be lying if I said it's been easy.

The final countdown begins...

  11. Outstanding work, especially with the large quantity of conversions. I love the banner(beast)men and the texture of the banner and shields at the price of its stability! lol
