Oh boy! Where does all the time go?
Hi! I'm Ben, and this is my first OWAC, and I'm super excited to be part of this.
I've been classically overambitious, and even writing this now I'm feeling the bitter edge of that ambition slipping away...
So where to begin?
This project has emerged over three lockdowns, numerous bidding brawls on eBay, and extensive researching of anything and everything Bob Olley. OWAC emerged as the best opportunity to see it finished.
During Easter 2020 I'd intended to recreate the Beastmen Mordheim Warband of my high school years. Having never been that satisfied with the models available, I stumbled upon those sculpted by Bob, and really wanted to acquire a few.
The acquisition proved to be far more challenging than expected due to their general scarcity. The mordheim warband never happened - but the general obsession with collecting them just grew and grew.
I had to have all of them...
Aren't they glorious?
Around the 30 mark it was clear an army was forming - I gathered other figures from the era; centaurs, minotaurs, other beastmen figures for command - but none of them quite felt right. As wonderful and oldhammer as they were - they just didn't match the spirit of his sculpts. The Olley beastmen looked so soulful and unsure, dressed in his characterful and detailed baroque clothing. Everything at odds with what we'd expect from Games Workshop since then.
The Bobsession grows...
Do not speak to me or my son ever again.
I was dimly aware that Bob had sculpted for quite a few companies in the 90s, as well as forming his own company in the 2000s - but hadn't really looked into it - and thanks to the now defunct Bob Olley wiki (that you can find on archive.org) - you can readily find much of his back catalog still cast today.
The threads and thoughts came together, and a mandate was decided. A wall to wall Bob Olley beastmen army was to be mustered. Fully compatible with both 3rd (and later) rulesets.
I like to think it is partially a demake of a 'modern' Beastman army, as well as an idea of what an army might have looked like if he'd been commissioned to do a full range. Pretty much every miniature in the army, aside from the citadel beastmen, is converted. With the exception of the boar bodies, some matchsticks and the horns on the shaman, everything was an Olley figure.
A cup of Bob Olley miniatures.
Korag's Horde
To give a bit of direction to the project, there is a little narrative. So I eagerly present to you -
As the army progresses each month, the story of KORAG will progress a little bit too - from humble origins as a pit fighter, to a despoiling conqueror.
Who remembers those AD&D character packs from 1985?
Not me! I wasn't born until 1986 - but they're great aren't they.
The intended roster for the next 6 months is as follows (expect all of this to change...)
MONTH ONE - KORAG OF THE PITS (unit 1)
It all starts with the Tzaangors and their fab hats.
MONTH TWO - KORAG THE LIBERATOR (unit 2)
MONTH THREE - KORAG AND THE WILD HUNT (unit 3)
This was a very heavy session of dremmeling and gluing.
It had the charming by product of completely removing your thumbprint.
MONTH FOUR - KORAG THE DESTROYER (wildcard)
MONTH FIVE - KORAG THE CHOSEN (unit 4)
MONTH SIX - KORAG THE CONQUEROR (general)
The Overlord's Offering
The tribute to the benevolent and wise overlord in the choice colours of baby pink and blue...

Finally...
It's a pleasure to be working on this - and especially on this platform. Hopefully HOPEFULLY this will all pan out as intended - but let's see! There are quite a lot actually aren't there...
I've been loving seeing your conversions take shape on Instagram and the OWAC FB group. I'm really excited for your army to progress!
ReplyDeleteThanks! It'll be exciting to actually FINISH some of this stuff!
DeleteReally looking forward to this, and ill be very impressed if you manage to paint all of it!
ReplyDeleteYou and me both! If I fail I want to fail magnanimously...
DeleteHoly...um...cow! Look at 'em all. Glorious. Good luck with the paint!
ReplyDeleteThanks!😎
DeleteBlown away by the amount of converting you've done. This is going to look impressive.
ReplyDeleteThanks John! When you start to chop you just can't stop!
DeleteDude these look incredible ! Can't wait to see your progress, so excited I'm even tempted to forgive the lack of right angles on the bases ;)
ReplyDeleteThere's some method to the madness with the roundys, and a few months of soul searching...
DeleteAs a fellow Olley collector I just want to say...WOW! I will be watching with great interest.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Any tips for Olley painting?
DeleteIf you like layering be careful of edge highlighting, the first highlight practically paints itself but the second looks wrong if you just follow the contours of the sculpt.
DeleteIf you are more into washes I'd contemplate using enamels or oils to get more working time as the deep details can lead to strange pooling.
They are not naturalistic sculpts so it's generally a good idea to lean into the stylisation.
DeleteAn all Olley army is quite exciting, I've got the beastmen but they are mostly bare lead - your mission therefore being to inspire me to do something about that! Looking forward to seeing them come together.
Honestly not a fan of Mr Olley's miniatures as a rule, but this is an awesome project. A bit surprised not to see any of his harpies in here, as they are amongst the few of his works that I own... anyway, good luck!
ReplyDeleteI did want to include some harpys! Espsecially as there's ones for Citadel, Ral Partha AND an odd one that Midlam produce - but I still to this point only have one! Maybe if some come up on ebay before June we might see a few...
DeleteAmazing army! Yes, there sure are a lot of miniatures!
ReplyDeleteThanks Lissanne! I've been base coating all afternoon - and there's still lots to go!
DeleteThat's a feast for the eyes already - great job on all the conversions! You've got some seriously good sculpting skills of your own, but you managed to keep the Olley character shining through even with the bigger conversions.
ReplyDeleteThe unit of Centaurs looks amazing! Well worth the sacrifice of your thumbprint! ;-)
You've got a massive challenge ahead of you, but I can't wait to see them all painted up! Good luck!
Thanks Graeme! My iPhone still rejects it even though its been a few weeks!
ReplyDeletePress moulds are getting lots of use as you can see!😎
Keep your head down, stick to your plan and paint your ass off. I love your basing style. Best of luck
ReplyDeleteEight boars on his chariot? The man's mental. He absolutely cannot be stopped!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, this is a respectable project. Find a sculptor you like, go in on the work. Forge a narrative, Realms of Chaos style all the way. It's a whole lotta goat boys and I wish you the best of British luck in getting 'em all done.
Lots of fun conversions and Olley character in this army
ReplyDeleteReally looking forward to this one developing - Bob on!
ReplyDeleteThere is an awful lot to admire here - great intro post and brilliant project for your first OWAC. Please don't lose the ambition, this promises to be a thing of Oldhammer awesomeness!
