'It's a Dead Man's Party, who could ask for more?'
After saying I would never do undead, here I am doing undead. I am not much of a WF player, but I find myself with a bunch of Warhammer Quest, Zombies of Karr-keel, and gifts from friends that need painting, and lo and behold I have a undead army. Throw in a couple of old figs (like that undead war rhino) that need re-painting, and it is a pretty good-looking army. Oh, and did I mention I have hundreds of sprue skeletons given to me to do painting demos? (only 15 yrs old, but what the hey? Everything else is old or oldschool) I already primed the ones I will use in this force.
The main reason I chose undead was to FINALLY do my WQ Catacomb of Terror figurines after lo, many decades. And I based everything on NPC's in our D&D game, because, double duty. So the lich Dirge and her retinue will be the command. A lich 20, two level 15 undead heros, and a level 10 Necromancer. These match the levels of the D&D NPC's they are patterned after. Oh, there's a zombie in that set too, and I'm adding Dirge's undead dog courtesy of Karr-kell.
This will be a 3rd edition force, but I am not going to paint graveguard. I already have a lot of Heroquest grave guard if I ever get the urge to field an 3rd edition undead WHF army. They are seen here with the 60 skeletons I will be painting. I can only have 30 spearmen, so I will only count the spear points for 30. But they all have shields, and each group of 20 has matching ones!
I also have way too many mummies from Heroquest, etc. So none of them either. But...
There will be an ethereal host of 3 Reaper Wraiths. This is my Zombie Helper. Wraiths are not difficult to do a killer paint job on, and are worth 150 pts a pop. Zombies of Karr-kell, which I love and want to do bang up jobs on, are more difficult, and worth, well, nothing much (4pts, I think) So Zombie Helper.
the Wraiths
And the ZombiesI have a carrion I want to paint to match one I already did, stripped and primed.
And the Karr-kell death riders
I have an undead Grenadier rhino I have stripped (it was started) and will be calling a plague cart, as it is carrying people inside it. I also have a half completed Grenadier skeletal dragon, but will strip and post that if I get to it.
So the Legion of Dirge, destroyer of temples
Command unit:
Dirge the temple builder and temple destroyer.
(that WQ chair will probably be carried on a Palanquin of Skeletons (removable) as befits a powerful lich)
Carden ex-high priest Undead Hero
Charlotte- ex ranger Undead Hero
Dirge's Undead dog, Blonde blue eyed rotweiller
She builds a temple, than she leaves and builds a new one and goes to war with the old.
Dirge- Lich 20 345pt
Carden- Hero 15 85pt (with skeleton unit)
Charlotte-Hero 15 85pts (with skeleton unit)
Leopold-Necromancer 10 85 pt (with skeleton unit)
total 600 pts characters
Troops:
60 Skeleton Warriors- 30 w/spear, 60 w/shield 690pts
Carrion 45pt
5 Death Riders 105pt
Undead Rhino (plague cart) 100pt
Zombies as get painted (4pts each, I'll add the points later)
total 940+ rank and file
Ethereal Host (the former high priests of the temples she destroyed)
3 Wraiths 450pt
Oh yeah, I also have some Warhammer Quest bats that need painting ....
---
Total 1990, a good year for figurines!
and maybe
And a troupe of allied beastmen (10) that was a present
and that skeletal dragon figure. Who knows?
This is my pool to choose from- if all goes well, a lot of extra will get painted, if not, they won't. I will post unpainted pics of any add ons here as I do them like I usually do. We'll see how it goes. But it's not my first time around the block, so I know what is easy and what is hard. I expect to show a unit of skeletons plus something else in the first month, probably WQ figures. And good luck to everyone!
Nice! I had that skeleton rhino myself years ago, it just didn't survive the cut when I scaled back my horde...
ReplyDeleteI have the whole batch of grenadier skeleton thingies. Only the rhino and dragon remain to be finished. Because in the long ago I did all of them for a gaming store too, and they are not easy figs to put together. Doing them twice often seems a heavy task...
DeleteThis will be great to see come together. I haven't seen many of those models before so I can't wait to see what they will look like painted and assembled.
ReplyDeleteMerjin did the throne lich last OWAC, but I haven't seen painted examples of most of the others, so I will be surprised too!
DeleteThis will be great! Looking forward to seeing the zombies and rhino finished.
ReplyDeleteGreat selection of models. I really like the WH quest set! I am sure this is going to be a great army.
ReplyDeleteThat is a lot of skeletons! Looking forward to seeing you take on this army Lissanne!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Skeletons are very fast though, even with five or so steps on the bones (well, they should be fast- we will see) The beloved zombies though are a killer for taking time, and will have to be done bit by bit. Anyway, skeletons are the backbone of undead armies, aren't they?
DeleteNot your average Undead horde :)
ReplyDeleteAs always I wholeheartedly approve of minis doing D&Double duty - in fact that is giving me a headache on colour scheme for my army this year. I love that you have taken that one further and made your characters match your NPCs in levels.
