For the Leader month I planned for the Orc Chieftan of the Severed Hand Orcs, Hagar Sheol and the mastermind of all the orc forces, the mighty King F'yrr on War Wyvern
Despite only being the chief of the smallest of the three orc tribes, Hagar Sheol is featured on the stunning cover of the scenario book and is one of the two figures (the other being the dwarf leader Osrim Chardz) created especially for the set.
One of the rarest pieces for the collection, I have only ever seen him come up a couple of times for sale and one of those was when I grabbed him!
Completed Severed Hand Chieftain, Hagar Sheol
The Orc on War Wyvern was sculpted by Tony Ackland and released in 1984. This was the first of now a long line in Orc and War Wyvern sculpts and was originally just a general released before it was reused as a character in the scenario.
Base built up with bark and gravel
I decided on a larger base and stonework effect to add to its presence.
i have added some small pieces to the corner of its mouth which will be the bit for some reins in the future when I can settle on the right style (leather/rope or chains)
laying down initial base colours.
I have seen the Wyvern in a multitude of colours from deep red and purple to a red and green two tone similar to the later edition Wyverns but I settled on a more nature subdued scheme that would match the main armies
King F'yar dismounted.
The figure is a compact sculpt and like many sculpts of the era, can initially look quite crude but the more i worked on it the more detail and character I found.
King F'yar and War Wyvern
Great job on these! Congratulations on completing!
ReplyDeletePretty rare to see either of these figures and I've never seen both of them together.
The bark and gravel really worked well on the Wyvern's base, and makes the natural, subdued tones actually stand out really well. It's a great centrepiece for any Orc army.
Thanks, they are amongst the rarest pieces I have. I use this grey style bases for most of my figures, adds some base detail but not overwhelming the figure and neutral enough not to clash on most battlefields
DeleteAwesome finish! Even collecting these miniatures is not a small task and you have also done very fine work painting them. This is a very interesting project that I have recommended to fellow hobbyists.
ReplyDelete(I am also following a few guys who are still in the process of collecting the miniatures for Bloodbath at Orc's drift)
DeleteThanks! I have been collecting and painting them since 2015 (between other projects)
DeleteIt's not a proper Orc army without that wyvern model, and you've done a great job on yours. And I had no idea that that fabulous artwork existed as a miniature, so that's great to see, too.
ReplyDeleteThankyou! The Wyvern has come out better than I expected! The original artwork is lovely as well
DeleteThese are great! I love the Wyvern especially, and I don't think I have ever seen those characters before! Excellent finish!
ReplyDeleteThank you! The Wyvern and rider have a bit of a presence and I have seen some done but Hagar was a rare find
DeleteWow - wonderful minis and what a paintjob! I've loved watching this project grow - thank you!
ReplyDeleteThank you! looking forward to presenting the full group in the roundup, and I will also have them added the rest of the Bloodbath Orcs I have completed!
DeleteThat guy is a relic. Well done!
ReplyDeleteThank you, the Wyvern Rider especially came alive with some paint
DeleteLovely job on some genuine ancient treasures. This is proper Oldhammer!
ReplyDeleteThank you! Second Edition Gold!
DeleteWhat a classic way to finish an orc army! Fantasic!
