Frank's: The Great Work - A Daemonic Legion of Slaanesh, from Realm of Chaos - Slaves to Darkness

Building this Slaaneshi Legion has been a labor of love. It is the hobby project I always felt like I had missed out on somehow. A combination of available funds, time, and just finding the proper models had always conspired to make it feel out of reach. And yet, here they are arrayed for glorious battle. Victorious, I shall quote Realm of Chaos - Slaves to Darkness, my force is "no petty collection of mortals squabbling on an insignificant battlefield." But rather, "an instrument of a Chaos god's will, wielded in the eons-old struggles of the gods."

Throughout this undertaking, I have been basing my models on the circular Warhammer 40,000 - Rogue Trader style bases, because it gives me the most options to get them on a tabletop by simply swapping out trays or base inserts. For example, here is a picture of them smashing into mortals on a Kings of War table just a few weeks ago.

However, now with them painted and mustered to be deployed as a daemonic legion as intended, I have made square Warhammer Fantasy Battle (3rd edition) unit trays for them all. Now arrayed on square bases of the appropriate sizes even the grumpiest of grognards should be happy with their fabulous frivolity.

Here is a rundown of the Legion’s strength as it now stands…

Core Troops: 3,000 points

Daemonettes x30; organized into five units of six, each unit is worth 600 points

Specialist Troops: 1,920 points

Daemonettes mounted on Steeds of Slaanesh x12; fielded in two units, each worth 720 points

Fiends of Slaanesh x12; fielded in two units, each unit is worth 240 points

Exotic Troops; 928 points

Slaaneshi Legionaries w/ bows and seeking arrows x6; fielded in a single unit worth 228 points

Slanneshi Spawn pack w/ Daemonette pack mistress x7; fielded as a single unit of 700 points

Commanders: 1,150 or 4,750 points

Keeper of Secrets w/ The Rod of Command; free, but valued at 900 points

Keepers of Secrets x3; free, but valued at 900 points each

Random equipment pool for the Greater Daemons…340 points divided as needed

Daemon Prince of Slaanesh w/ familiar; costs 810 points

My Slaaneshi Legion is now a fully field-able legal army as laid out in the Slaves to Darkness tome, able to play Daemonic Legion games up to 7,000 points and up to four greater daemons.

I would now like to thank the Overlord for organizing this year’s challenge. Perhaps, if asked to return, I will flesh the Legion out with auxiliaries and mortals. 10,000 points seems like it would be a nice round number to put a pin in...

    1. Thanks. Gave a fair bit of thought for how to make it look like 'an army' while still making it a crazy barrage of colors like I saw in Slaces to Darkness

  3. This is a seriously impressive and genuinely noteworthy army. The painting is vibrant and eye catching and very much in keeping with the feeling of old school Slaanesh that I remember from back in the day, but more than that, the level of care and attention to detail in collecting and converting such an impressive collection of demons into a truly unique force is a hobby achievement to be proud of!

    1. Thanks. It's been in my head for years. Good to finally get it out. Despite the much more technically slick models that GW made for Slaanesh in the last half decade, I don't think Slaanesh is really the same faction or theme as it once was.

  8. Hobby goals 101. Outstanding. The riot of colour in that army shot is a wonderous thing. Even more so that the army is already blooded on the field, and is out on the tabletop for all to witness! 💪👊

  9. "Riot of colour" is definitely the right description! I don't think you could have done Realm of Chaos Slaanesh any better, to be honest. An acheivement to be proud of :)
