Jaeckel's dwarfs - Leader - The Bishop (489 points)

"All-in" month. Well well well... Second year spent on my "Swiss" dwarves, and second year I fail in painting my mounted general... Maybe next year? In the meantime, I give you:

#1. The Canus Gigas... ("Grey Giant" in Classical)

In 1577, under an overturned oak tree in the canton of Lucerne, gigantic bones were discovered, which City of Basel physician Felix Platter later declared as those of a giant, the Helvetus Gigas. In reality, they were mammoth fossil bones. Of course, in the Old World, the Gigas is an actual inhabitant of the Grey Mountains...
The Giant of Lucerne (Chapel bridge, Lucerne)
The creature is one of the Citadel C28 giants, the original bone (unfortunately lost) replaced by a plastic club from the GW Gargant kit. The painting was quite fun, although I'm not totally satisfied with the result. Working on dwarves does not help in progressing on large surfaces of flesh and clothes I guess.

Speaking of dwarfs, the Gigas often needs some help to find the battlefield: whips, forks and man (or is it ball?)-catchers have proven their efficiency, as giants are not famous for their skills in manoeuvring.

Now go!

#2. The Wild Dwarves...

Two wild men as shield holders (The Chaff Bridge, Lucerne)

Using all the dwarfs released by Marauder Miniatures in a single army can be difficult, as the style of the Longbeards, the Slayers and some Clasnmen does not fit at all with the Renaissance flavor of the other models. But I realized last year that I could at least use the woodwose figure, often depicted in Middle-Age and Renaissance paintings bearing coats of arms, to transform my slayers into a band of Wild Dwarves, coming from the most remote valleys of the Grey Mountains.

Like their distant cousins, Wild Dwarves like ornemented shields, but favor wood over iron to hit the enemy.

And #3 the Bishop of Grungni!

Saint Leger (Chapel bridge, Lucerne)

No leader month without a character, eh? Well, until the mercenary captain can ride his poney, the Bishop of Grungni will lead his fidels against their contractual foes.

Based on a Marauder wizard model, the added bits come from an old Citadel C46 villager. My plan was to give him a carrocio to facilitate his moves (he's a very old Bishop!), but for the moment, he'll just have to walk. May Grungni's force be with him.

That's it for 2022! In terms of points, we have:

  • the Gigas: 250 points
  • the Bishop (Lvl 15 wizard): 203 points
  • the Wild Dwarves (slayers with shield): 36 points
for a total of 489 points.

See you next month for the wrap-up :)

  1. Lovely paintwork and a fantastic selection of figures, the giant has always been a favourite of mine, a more subtle figure than later ranges. The wild dwarves and Bishop are great characters

The weapon swaps to handle the giant are lovely - the mancatcher... which part of the giant is that for 😂😬

  5. The bishop is brilliant, but it's those Giant Handlers that win it for me - as a half giant myself I don't like the idea of Ball-catchers! ;)
