So. A month has passed, and rather quickly, I would say. Obviously I took this project lightly, taking my time and procrastinating, while I collected ideas and finished the final touches on the January models... I definitely should have started earlier, but January has always been a slow month to start and so I found myself, obviously, almost at the last minute. That's why, after wasting a couple of days feeling sorry for myself about my stupidity, I decided to reevaluate my plan and change its priority, postponing the painting of the first main warband in favor of the two skirmisher hunting parties.
At the beginning I had thought about real units, with a complete command group, musician, banner and so on, and I had considered the idea of converting warriors into standard bearers. but then I thought better of it, preferring the idea of two light groups, more hunters and scouts than professional warriors.
But I wanted to maintain the idea of a classist warrior society based on castes and specialization, so I tried to start from the bottom by imagining what the least military and organized group would be. Obviously leaving out farmers, shepherds and all the population not suited to war, the first "weapon owners" would be the hunters, and so the barbarian archers come into play.
Here they are, a full unit of 10, and a leader, Just for good measure. Pointwise they count as
10 chaos thugs, hand weapon, light armor, now. 100 points
Now onto the second units. A slightly higher caste, these tribesmen are closer to the warriors than hunters: they have access to real weapons rather than hunting tools, so small shields and javelins. Far richer than hunters, many can even afford a helmet or a sword. In battle they are used as skirmishers, scouts, messengers and pursuers.
For this purpose I had to convert some common warriors, removing the original weapons and changing some poses. I actually started by chance, trying to improve some terrible metal recasts that ended up in my collection via an eBay lot; fortunately I had several pieces leftover and a lot of green stuff. Where possible I tried to use metal components but unfortunately plastic is inevitable. However, I insisted that at least the basic models be made of metal. The javelins are taken from the Warlord Landsknecht Pikemen kit, which I converted to metal pikes. A recovery I'm quite proud of.

Those are One of the worse recast i had, so a bit more work was required |
 |
Also this exalted was a very bad shaped recast. My putty work Is not the best either. At least he has metal horns. |
Here the result. A full unit of 10 with leader. Javelines are not a thing in this edition, so they count as
10 chaos thugs, hand weapon, light armor, shields and throwing axes
100 points
Some close-ups on the shields
I have also added a couple of extra models, Just for good measure, in case i need other characters, Champions or musicians. And a tent, to house them during hunts or long campaigns.

those are the only plastic models in the army. Still not sure If i want to use them here, but al least they fit the theme.
And thats It, for january, next month i plan to build One of my main units.. wish me luck.
See you soon and
STAY OLD SCHOOL!
Good start! Very characterful, especially the conversions. It's great to see you adding bundles of javelins to your skirmishers - throwing spears of various sorts were an important weapon for thousands of years of real history, and it's always a bonus to see them on a Warhammer mini
ReplyDeleteExactly my point! I understand the lack of those weapon in modern time warhammer (circa 1500 Ad) but in the order eras should be a standard for infantry! I have plan to add more stuff historically inspired (like sarissas and more... Maybe next OWAC
DeleteI agree with Shadespyre on the conversions. They are very nicely done and fit the unit. I also like the warpaint/tattoo designs and shields. The one with checkers and blue is very oldhammer and pops out nicely from the group
ReplyDeleteThank you. Creating such design Is the longest part of the work. Figuring what to paint and where tend to put me in decision loop because i want a mix design of various inspiration. In March ill explain more in detail why.
DeleteWell thats given me a few ideas for my barbarians, thanks
ReplyDeleteFeel free to use them, but in Exchange Remember to show me your work 😉
DeleteI really appreciate the thought you have put in to your force composition and social caste system. It definitely pays off in terms of the identity of the units being really clear. Great conversions, lovely painting and basing, and the tent is ace! A very strong first month :D
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! It Is Indeed a work of love. In March i Will paint another regiment and i Will dive deeper in the concept... Dont forget to take a look
DeleteI am impressed by your painting and also sculpting skills... everything fits together, well done !
