Pete's Empire 3rd Ed - I really should be painting

I don’t know how common this is, but OWAC gives me a forum to find out…

I have painted citadel miniatures for more than 30 years and have painted hundreds if not thousands of the blighters. There have been elves, dwarves, Orcs, Slann you name it over the years. However, in all those years never ever EVER have I actually finished an army.  The throw-away comments about “new shiny things” and the modern memes about unpainted minis are all far too real for me and it hurts.
Its not a problem with painting, I genuinely love painting – It is a problem with commitment. This challenge then, I hope, will give me to incentive and impetus to knuckle down and produce something to be proud of, that the community can enjoy and most of all, is complete!
Biggest Unit I have managed to finish in the past

Slann were meant to be a project I finished, mostly sold now
One problem of army painting then is certainly my mercurial nature and wandering mind. For this project to counteract that I wanted to go for something where every model is unique in some way. I also want to include a smattering of races to keep it interesting so have opted for a 3rd edition Empire army with a few halflings, dwarves and ogres lightly sprinkled through the ranks.
In fluff terms I think this is completely reasonable as many races live side-by-side in Imperial cities and in terms of aesthetics it certainly works and I have seen a lot of recent excellent examples around the web.
The main force though I want to be a “proper” rank and file tabletop army. Ranks and ranks of grim determined men of the Empire standing shoulder to shoulder against the darkness.  Finally, as it is an “Old World” challenge I intend to use classic Marauder and citadel models from MM60, MM62, C46 and F ranges.
Last but not least, I feel that one of the most charming elements of a proper 3rd edition army is its baggage train so I will be including a cart and 5 civilians.

So on to the list – which is probably overly optimistic as it runs to 110 Models.
29 Ersatzolder, Light Armour, Shields, Standard, Musician = 248
29 Hellblitzen, Standard = 270
39 Ersatzolder, Spear, Shield, Standard = 280
10 Armbrustschutzen* =100 pts
1 Graf (Lev 5 Hero) Heavy Armour, Shield = 34
1 Graf (Lev 5 Hero) Light Armour, Zweihander = 34
1 Zauberer (Lev 5 Wizard) = 60

*The Armbrustschutzen deserve a special mention as they will be DoW Tileans. I made a Faustian bargain with Yosef earlier in the year swapping some minis for my brushwork so this allows me to kill two birds with one stone and send him something painted!
TOTAL = 1026 pts

Thanks for reading, have to run as I really should be painting...… Pete

Lissanne's Chaos Demons-the Return of Ignatz the Handful

                                                                       DEMONS!
As I said in OWAC I, I am a Oldschool 40K player, and play little Warhammer Fantasy.  But Iannick was kind enough to allow me to paint a demon force which is useful for both!

So here is my planned army  Led by the Demon Lord Ignatz the Handful (the old Lammasu figure without the chaos dwarf), his beloved Magnolia the Dragon Ogre, 6 Flamers, 10 Old Demonettes slightly converted (they are Sexecutioners, after all, not Disney villians!) and... I'm over 1000pts already (gods, they are a lot of points!)   But... I also have fiends, even more demonettes, and those lust abominations from 'the others' which make the best Slaanesh spawn I've ever seen.  I plan to paint as much as I can!

Points (1012+)
Unaligned Demon Prince - Ignatz the Handful (275 pts)
6 Flamers of Tzeentch 300 pts (50 each)
1 Dragon Ogre - Magnolia (87 pts)
10 Demonettes 350 pts (35 each)

18 figs is not a lot,  so not to cheap out completely on the amount of models, and because I need spare points to get 200+ a month
5+ Demonettes (35 each)
5+ Fiends (30 each)
 3 chaos spawn (70 each)
The minimum unit is 5, except for spawn

This force is Chaos Undivided Demons, it would be pure Slaanesh except I have my heart set on painting those flamers. Plus it's time to paint Ignatz, the long time threat in our D&D game, for which I bought him for, lo, those decades ago.  Now he can bring his friends!

Since I prefer to paint, then assemble (and then paint some more)  I have gone as far as I can for the moment, except for the 2 bigger bases and making movement trays for display and WF-ish.
Ultimately, it's all SABLE though- my goal is to get stuff painted!

(and brownie points if you know where Ignatz and Magnolia came from!)

James' Bones in the Basement

Back in the early 90's I was approached by a guy in the school cafeteria that was familiar with our local D&D group. He was pitching this bonkers idea that we could have just as much fun with dice and MINIATURES as we were currently having with dice and paper.
I was skeptical, but I gave it a shot.

What followed was years and years of modeling depravity, ultimately leading to that same guy approaching me 25+ years later and challenging me to finally get off my dusty butt and paint those same models that I had picked up in Junior High School.
So, here we are. Thanks, Brennan.

My project is going to be centered around some old Ral Partha, Citadel and Grenadier figs, as well as scraps from the Skeleton Army box that haven't yet been completely destroyed by pets and adolescent tomfoolery.  Thanks to this whole thing getting off the ground around Black Friday, I've also got some nice skeletons and carrion on their from the UK.

The picture here is me making sure I've got at least the first month's entry prepped ahead of time while I wait for the order to come in for the rest of the goodies.

That's a Frostgrave wizard being used as the Necromancer; he heard there're some great secrets hidden away in Lustria, so watch your back, Brennan's Slann!
  • Necromancer L10:  85

Closing words : 1st edition of the OWAC

Last summer I met with Chris, to play a game of Oldhammer. IT was then we discussed the idea of an Oldhammer painting challenge. I was searching for my Oldhammer mojo, with me working on different projects like Epic, skirmish Sc-Fi, etc. and I wanted it back. Some kind of peer pressure activity would surely help, right?

It also happens that I love painting challenges (I'm part of the Analogue Challenge every winter). You get to help one another, meet new gamers, gain inspiration and, most importantly, THEY ACTUALLY WORK. Yes, where motivation (and lazyness) is often the issue for us gamers, painting challenges are a proven remedy, and apparently nothing lights a fire under a miniature painter's ass more than competition (and facing the shame of his peers).

Officially slated for a few gamers, 12 at most, it just snowballed from there and before I knew it we were 36 and I had to refuse people! It turned out like an international event, too, with people from Italy and Ireland all the way to Japan!

The beginnings were a lot of work, to explain the concept and all, but also because many members were "Facebook" people and never used Blogger. Starting a challenge with that many people wasn't easy.

But then challengers started getting in a groove, and it ran more smoothly. It got real fun, even if challenging. And, if after the 2nd months I got a bit afraid of our drop-out rates, it stabilized after that and I'm real proud we got 26 challengers at the finish line.

So was it a success? Hell yeah it was. Beyond my wildest expectations, in fact. I love seeing the (now) OWAC veterans already planning their next challenge, thinking about their armies, etc. and I hope the challenge eventually becomes a special moment of the year for all involved. As I mentionned on Facebook, there's a guaranteed spot for every victors of the challenge next time around.

Now, I did take notes, and there's gooing to be a few changes for the next round, although nothing major.

I want to thank Clarence for the logo, Thomas, Chris and Colin on the Admin jobs., and all of the challengers who participated in the challenge, whether you reached the end or not! This fun 6 months ride was possible because of all of you!

See you all in November, December or January (I haven't made up my mind yet), and get ready for round 2!

Keep painting,

Nathan's slann army

Finally got of my arse and took some pics of my slann army. I won't go through the points value of hat I painted as one could check my other posts for that. I will note that the pics include 4 troglodytes that I painted prior to the challenge and 2 slann and one lizardman that I've painted since. My plan over the next few months is to do a few figures a month to beef the force up to a level where I could use it in a game against some of the other warhammer armies that I have painted. Anyway here are the pics:

Me wearing my 1980s era Fitzroy jumper - fits the topic I reckon!

Ratwig's Close Out Report

This was my first successful painting challenge. I enjoyed it as I mostly had enough time to get my painting in prior to the monthly deadlines. Really only came close to mulligan once, on the last entry.

I painted up 1632 points of Dark Elves total. This ended up being higher than my original estimate of 1500 due to changes in two units, the second crossbow unit receiving extra troops, a character and repeater crossbows and the Doomsteeds receiving crossbows. If I add a magic user and magic items to the army it goes to 2000 points quick, and I’m still short forty warriors. They will be added next. I have enough figs for this army to do another challenge, we’ll see what I get painted before then.

And that concludes my portion of the Old World Army Challenge. Have a good day, I’m still testing a bottle of Jack for impurities…
