Tom's Chaos Renegades - Wrap up

So the final wrap up....
These are the all the pics of all the models painted over the last six months, and at the end of the post there's the usual links back through the blog posts if you (or, more likely, future me) want to find something specific , along with the revised army list and model count🙃.

Anyway. Unfortunately I did not get everything I wanted done due to The House Move and also some personal stuff.
Motivation dropped super low at times, but now as I'm writing this I am again becoming enthused (or infused) with the call of the Chaos, so hopefully there'll be a few more additions in the near future - namely fast attack!
On the plus side, I am really happy with how these have come out. I have tried some different colour schemes, and painted some of my most daunting models (that Palanquin, or Greater Daemon for instance). I think, if I were to go back, I would add magnets to the base, to help with storing and moving them - before starting any painting. Lesson learnt for next time!

Aaaaanyway - on with pictures. Single models first, and group shots after. I took away the digital blue faded background and switched it out to an undistracting white. The white is a digital add, so that there are no shadows. I used the android app Digital Eraser to do this.

And behold, the true might of the Chao Project! I was so enthused, that I painted up quite a few before the Challenge started proper :) Hopefully there'll be more added later (but I have said that before 😂)

Anyhow, the army list hasn't changed from last month - you can click the June link below if you like...

Shadespyre's July Post - OWAC VII Wrap up - Guardians of the Moonglade - 3rd Edition Wood Elves (7902 points, 228 models)

OWAC VII - Wrap up - Guardians of the Moonglade

July

Another OWAC completed, my fourth and possibly my favourite. Why? Because it's a decent match to the picture I had in my head when I started, and also it never quite became a chore despite there being so much of it. It's actually my biggest OWAC to date, if only by around 10 minis. And it might get bigger.

Straight into a couple of army pictures. I can't really get enough light in this room, and my poor old camera doesn't really have enough resolution, but they give an idea of the size of the project.

And because some of the earlier units I painted weren't based immediately, here's a pictures of the Spring, Summer and Autumn groups of Elves. Hopefully this gives an idea of how I tried to use different combinations of the same basing materials to give a slightly different feel to each faction.

Expansion Plans?

I haven't actually painted anything extra since June, but I still may be adding to the army in the near future. Having bemoaned the lack of miniatures to include any dedicated melee units just last month, I immediately managed to acquire enough extra Elves to make that possible!

I also have a unit of possible "Winter" Elves which I'd really struggled to find a good colour scheme for, but as some people seem to like the Winter hero from June I may just try and paint them like that. It'll probably be easier to find my way with the time pressure taken off.

This would all add another 40 or so miniatures to the project, making it my biggest army since The End Times came - for comparison, my 7E/8E Vampire army is around 450, while my 6/7/8E Middenheim Empire army is over 600 minis, but is nowhere near as pretty.

Reflections and Regrets

This one went pretty well. I hadn't really defined my colour scheme before I started and had to feel my way towards something that I liked, but I think once I'd done that it all flowed quite well. The moon theme arrived a little late, and perhaps that shows in the somewhat simple banners, but those are probably the only thing I'd want to change very much. Oh, the 3d printed shields aren't quite as neat as I'd like, but I don't think it matters en masse. And where was I going to get a hundred of the original crescent shaped ones?

I like how the basing looks but it took forever and cost a lot (though I have plenty left over), but I think it's my favourite basing scheme across my OWACS so it was all worth it in the end.

One final self-criticism - once again, the army is bigger than it needs to be! Every unit of 16 Elves could have been 12 or even 10, and there could easily be half as many Zoats and Halflings and it would still express the same themes and ideas and be a useable army. I think I said this about OWACs VI and V as well so I don't know if I'll ever learn...

OWAC VIII

I'll definitely take part. Will it be a big project or a small one? Fantasy or 40k? I don't know yet, and to be honest I don't think I'll think about it much before October.

Ben's Eldar - OWAC VII - Wrap-up post

What a fun way to fill in some of the gloomier months of the year - even so, I'm glad it's finished!

I've been able to finish off a couple more Vyper Jetbikes - I enjoy that they remind me of the horde of Alaitoc jetbikes, lost in the mists of time, that I used to field when I played Epic.

And what says 'Space Elves' better than a jet-powered flying wizard?  I've now, I think, painted one of each Warlock sculpt; sadly, when I stripped the paint off this one, it turned out to be (yuck) finecast, and when I tried to straighten the sword, it promptly snapped, so I had to convert him a Singing Spear with a couple of spare parts.  Perhaps he's zapping someone with some kind of eldritch curse.

Adding up the points for the almost 100 models I painted this year, and I am slightly astonished (even though it contains a load of very expensive characters) to find it's over 5,000 points!

As I've finally got to the bottom of the pile of minis... I couldn't resist taking a picture of my whole army, including stuff I painted last year as part of another challenge:

Slaaneshchild tentaculich wrap-up : 6 month of disease, plague and despair

So hhhhheeeeeere we are. 7 months later, with more than 5000 pts painted. What a great adventure !

I didn't have the time/the courage to paint the flies and the pestigors, I will do it later

This army was a great challenge as I am more used to paint dark elves and slaaneshi models, but it was a real pleasure !

I also think more chaos spawns are missing, I will probably do it in the months to come with the pestigors and flies.

I do love all of them, it was so much fun to paint and to convert ! The flagellants, plaguebearers, plague knights, daemon prince, great unclean one... and of course chariots and altar.

I couldn't make a proper wrap up picture this year, with me behind, I add to rush packing my stuff for vacation... but I am all here ! In each miniature, behind each single nurgling, that's all me !!

the horde in it glorious pride

plaguebearers

masters of plagues with army standard bearer

the master of all, Conjonctivus the glorious !

Manson's family

chaos altar of unseen beauties

Next year ??

Good question. I have a side project to convert/create all the special characters for Dark Elves 5th ed army book (when I was a child, dark elves were the poorest army in terms of miniatures, so I will take my revenge by creating appropriate special characters. And Dark Elves are all about revenge, aren't they ?? )

But it doesn't make an army. So I am thinking... maybe rebuild my Emperor's Children, but I want to play them now... Will I be able to wait until the next OWAC ? Will see next year !

Cheers !!

AdamH’s Skaven wrap up post

Another OWAC down, another contingent added to the ratty horde.

Once again I am really pleased with the amount of work I was able to complete during the challenge. I have said it before but I find the challenge a great motivator and I am never as productive as I am during the first six months of the year.

This was my third OWAC representing #TeamSkaven and my sixth overall. But focusing on the Skaven I think I now have about 6,000 points worth minus magic items. A really nice size for an army but not quite where I want to leave them. Therefore you can expect to see at least one more Skaven entry from me in the future, however it won’t be next year, for that I have other plans, green and creepy plans…

Let’s start with the Ansell (RIP) traditional pose:

Followed by some slightly closer pictures of the goods:

Specifically I want to highlight my favourite part of the challenge this year, which is my custom screaming bell. I’m really happy with how it came together and am looking forward to getting it on the table:

So what do the final stats look like for OWAC VII challenge:

Models painted: 139

Total points: 3,284.5

Current weight being held up by the glass shelves in my cabinet: about 10kg

But now is the time to show off what I always enjoy doing when I paint more Skaven for the challenge, get everything out together and see the full horde!

Looking a bit more closely at some of the clan specific sections first up we the terrible machines of war from clan Skryre:

The diseased fanatics of clan Pestilence:

The uncountable hordes of the Hell Pit of clan Moulder:

And finally the warrior clans:

As I mentioned above I still have at least one more #TeamSkaven OWAC in me, in fact I have already started to work out what units I plan to paint. I still need to expand the Eshin part of my force so a couple of units of Night Runners plus one more Gutter Runner unit should take care of that. Plus there are a couple more special characters I want to add. I also have another ten Rat Ogres to paint and two more Doom Wheels.

But as mentioned they are not the plan for next year, that particular plan is already well underway preparation wise.

Oh one other thing that I have been collecting this year as the challenge goes on is these cute little guys from Etsy:

Should you wish to pick up your own you can find them here. I’m not sponsored or affiliated in any way with them. I just thought they were super cute.

Anyway that’s me done for the year, I hope you have enjoyed this journey with me and the other challengers, until next time… squeak squeak man-thing!

James WRR’s Wrap Up: An Army Worthy of Slaanesh

The number of Slaanesh is six, and sixfold his blessings. An army in his name has been raised in six months, and it will stand for six-thousand!

The Emperor’s Children stride, strut and slither to war eternal!

That’s it! OWAC VII officially in the bag.

I’d like to thank my friends back in Australia for initiating me into the world of Warhammer all those years ago, my comrades in the challenge for their support and gifts, eBay sellers for putting models up on the site, and my long-suffering partner for putting up with me for these past six months. We did it!

Mighty, Dark-Winged, Avenging Lord of Chaos, James Rudd, with his Mighty Avenging Chaos Army.

Taking part in this challenge has been so much so fun. From list-building to lore-crafting and eBay-scouring to model-painting, these past six months have reignited my love for this hobby. It’s gotten me inspired for all manner of kooky future projects. And it’s made me insufferable to my local gaming group who, for some reason, INSIST on playing games written within the past decade. Tut, tut.

Oscar speeches aside, I’m truly so happy to have completed my first ever OWAC. It’s been a challenge at times, a real hit to my wallet and slightly maddening (why did I decide each element of my models needed six layers of edge highlighting?), but I wouldn’t change it for the world.

I’ve ended up with, I like to think, a fantastic and unique army of charming miniatures. But I’ve also ended up in a cool group of like-minded Oldhammer fanatics who’ve provided no end of support and inspiration.

I’d particularly like to shout out Tom, Graeme, and Jaakko, who’ve been nothing but generous, with both models, info and encouragement. And also to John R for the awesome Space Dwarf adventurer.

I had originally prepared a short list of my absolute favourite projects from this year's OWAC, but there have been so many amazing armies created over these months it just stopped making sense as a highlights list. Instead, I implore you to take one of your free evenings and scroll back through all of this year's posts. It'll be time well spent, I promise you that!

The very last addition to my own OWAC project is a simple display board, made from a cheap box frame, a few layers of foam board, and plenty of sand and flock.

I’ve tried to balance the classic early-90’s “Planet Golf Course” aesthetic with more modern sensibilities. People on Instagram and Reddit always love the alien cacti I use to frame my model shots, so I made sure to add some here as well.

I hope you’ll agree that this board frames the whole army nicely, even if there’s not all that much real-estate to spare for each model. It had to fit in pride of place at the top of my Ikea Kallax shelves!

Better yet, the board itself is also ideal for games of Ritual28, once I move my hoard of freaky space dudes off of it.

Well, that’s that! Thanks all again for following along with this wild ride. I’m still trying to feel out whether or not I take part in next year’s challenge. I do have a whole Tzeentchian army for Warhammer Fantasy Third Edition in boxes now… we’ll just have to wait and see, I suppose.

In any case, chuck me a follow on Instagram (@illuminator_hobby) and hopefully I can catch some of you at events in the future.

Take it sleazy, OWAC. It’s been real!
